I took my elementary school aged kids with me for both a history lesson and some fresh air after researching Civil War era locations in Knoxville and found this place. The park/trail was very well maintained with several stopping points to highlight various aspects of the fort with signage. There is also a nice area with chairs and lush grass for a picnic or other outing. It would have been nice to have views of downtown from the high ground but still worth going.

We camped for a week here and enjoyed swimming, watching our 20-something kids paddle board, and taking walks around the park. One nice amenity is that you can schedule a black water pickup to come to your campsite!

This spot is very close to UT and the UT Medical Center. The short hike is easy and pleasant and culminating with an excellent view from about 300 feet of the river, UT campus and downtown Knoxville. We look forward to checking it out at sunset or sunrise when I’m sure it will be spectacular.

Somewhat remote, seems like it's new since the parking lot and stonework and fences around parking lot in good shape, and nice loop walking trail.

A wide trail leads from the parking lot leads to the top of a ridge nearly 300 feet (275) above the Tennessee River which in the winter is a good lookout to see Fort Sanders from the most western fortification south of the river built by the Union forces during the siege of Knoxville - Fort Higley. Trenches and a redan are visible and historic information is presented by displays of civil war era photos, maps and text.

This park is so clean and well maintained. The path is very shaded. The view at the top is blocked by heavy foliage. There are nice red chairs to sit in when you reach the top. This would be a great place to take professional photos.

I live in Knoxville and happened upon this awesome park/historical site. According to the signage some type of permanent exhibit is coming in the spring. It is brand new with very nice landscaping. The trail is trimmed with stacked stone with a pebble stones.
Very nice short walk. Great for small children or older adults. Parking lot has about 20 spots.
I walked during the day but please know that less than one mile away is a neighborhood that is in the lower income socioeconomic group that is more or less ok. It's not necessarily dangerous but I do not recommend coming by yourself.

We didn't realize the wildlife area had a different parking lot across the street, so we didn't get to check that out yet - hopefully there is a view. High Ground park is a nice civil war history park and the 1-mile path is very nicely manicured, there weren't any weeds alongside the path. It says that bicycles are allowed at the park but bicycling is not, LOL! There are chairs at the highest point but the view is blocked by trees, I guess you have to go in the winter. Watch out for spiderwebs, we walked into many of them. Mostly shaded walk, no restrooms.

I tried to find this park, used the exact directions ,brought me to a short gravel road, blocked by a closed gate with a no trespassing sign. Someone please help me find this place!
