I was a complete novice and my wife booked this. I’m glad she did. Lot if history around Victor Hugo including writing Les Meserables and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Fascinating building. Very intricate throughout.

Despite being closed we went to find the house,. Going past the house, uphill (house on left) there are some impressive private houses. Turn left at the nd of the road and you arrive back at the sea front near Octopus.

Excellent tour around a really fascinating house. You do need to book in advance. Victor Hugo was an amazing man with unique style!

We had an excellent detailed tour of Hauteville House from a very engaging tour guide! Would thoroughly recommend to locals or visitors.

The guide was very well informed and gave an interesting tour of one of the great literary and artistic houses of the world.
The home resembles a theatre, and the story of heartache and exile is palpable.

Just great to visit again, especially since renovations have been completed. Our guide was delightful and well informed. Thoroughly enjoyed another visit after 25 years!

The house is located up a steep hill from the port. On the day I visited (two cruise ships were in port) the house was fully booked and one was not able to enter. Entrance to the small garden was free, open for all visitors, and offered good views over the town and port. If you are particularly keen to view the interior of the house, ensure to book in advance or on an organized tour.

Worth seeing the refurbishment but my husband had visited 36 years ago and felt the essence remained the same but some features he wanted to see had altered. Excellent, informative and interesting guide. Remember to book at busy times as the tours are guided only.

Hauteville House was the home of the French writer and activist Victor Hugo from 1855 until 1873. During that period Napoleon III ruled France, and Hugo, having vociferously opposed him, left the country. The plain exterior of the house is in huge contrast to the interior, which is lavishly decorated - possibly over-decorated - with tapestry, tiles, and all sorts of objects and has recently been refurbished to restore as much of the Hugo-era appearance as possible. Getting in is not particularly easy: you have to book in advance and specify a tour in English (or French), but the tour guide we had was knowledgeable and helpful. Once you've seen the house, don't miss the garden, accessed from the street by a passageway just a little downhill from the house's front door.

The house is over decorated with tapestries and objects on every place available. More a house to show off, not a house to live in. Just my opinion.
But the tour was interesting. The knowledgeable guide explained every room in detail and told about Victor Hugo's life on the Channel Islands.
Best to book in advance for the guided tour, especially on days a cruise ship has arrived.
The guided tour is £ 10.
The walled garden at the back is lovely. You can visit the garden, free of charge, when the house is open.

Depends on how fit you are but anywhere around 15 / 20 mins. Well worth the climb.

We phoned the day before! No harm in pre booking as once we arrived and no spaces or English tours! Then it shut all last year !!!!
What is the fee for Hauteville House? How do we book a time to see this attraction?

vous pouvez réserver à l'office du tourisme sur le port, mais sommes allées la matin à Haute ville house et avons pu réserver pour l'après mid les guides ne prennetnque 10 personnes à la fois! jardin de victor Hugoi est gratuit et vaut le détour

The garden is accessible and very pleasant. The house has rather rickety old stairs. They may let yo look in the dining room on the ground floor.

Yes, I was given to believe that it would be closed all through 2018 by the guides in residence last March, 2017. You probably know that thehouse, although in Guernsey is operated by French people with govetnance from France.

It was not much, around 6-8£, it can be busy, so make a reservation to be sure you can get a tour in English.

It was under £10. Maybe £7 or £8. My daughter was free. Well worth the money. Seems a lot for a tour but it's one of the best ones out there.

I am visiting Guernsey in early October (from 4th), it seems that HH is open until September but I can't find any exact dates and I really hope that we can visit the house, it would be a real shame if we'd miss it by a few days. Does anyone know the date it closes?
