Wonderful little museum. Enthusiastic volunteers. Arranged on 3 levels (there is a lift) beginning from earliest times. Displays, artefacts, information panels, QR codes. Brilliant.

A fascinating collection of artefacts, cleverly displayed over 3 floors - allow plenty of time for your visit! The volunteers looking after the museum are very knowledgeable and friendly. Don't miss the evocative film about 1960's Dartmoor farming life. Currently there's a special display on Her Majesty The Queen's Coronation, which is extremely well thought out.

We try to keep improving our offer and changing the exhibitions so do come and see us again.
Our volunteers are amazing and always happy to share information.

We saw this by chance as it's well hidden and looks quite small. It's not...it covers 3 floors and each one crammed full of interesting objects and timelines. There is also a lift for those with mobility issues.
The lovely staff are on hand to answer any questions and there's a lovely little gift area, plus a Victorian tea Room close by.

Lovely museum, more to it than I first realised, and some interesting artefacts and recorded stories to listen to. Not being local, it was interesting to learn about the history of Dartmoor. Nice little shop at the end. Extremely friendly and helpful volunteers on the front desk. Would definitely recommend.

My visit was midweek early November so the museum was not very busy. The friendly staff told me a bit about the museum before I set off to explore.
I was particularly interested in the Roman history information, and about mining on Dartmoor. I liked the railway section, and the additional railway display in the exhibition room - appropriately I had arrived in town on the newly introduced train service from Exeter. I also liked the carts, vehicles and machinery on the ground floor.
The museum is well laid out, with informative captions to the displays. My visit lasted over 2 and a half hours, including browsing the small shop where there is a selection of books about local subjects.

A nice little surprise ticked off the main street. Would recommend it passing through Okehampton. The staff and curators were very friendly too and offered some local knowledge.

Lovely little museum spread over three floors and covering a wide range of history and exhibits. Friendly and engaging staff. When we went there was an amazing display of artwork by children from a local primary school. Allow 1 to 2 hours depending on how much of the written information you want to read.

As we were in Okehampton for the day thought we would visit this museum and we were so glad we did.The museum gives a wealth of information about living in Dartmoor through the ages with agreed deal of interesting exhibits detailing the various aspects of life. The museum is well set out with lots of information and very friendly staff. Well worth the admission fee

The many interesting exhibits in this museum take the visitor on a journey from prehistoric times to the present day, all with a local flavour. The museum building itself is interesting, and I was impressed with the activities arranged for children throughout the museum. The very professional volunteer staff were extremely helpful, explaining some of the exhibits, and providing useful information for my sightseeing in the local area. Well worth the price of entry. Highly recommended.

Hello from Australia... we are coming to Oakhampton shortly... tracing my family history, who I believe came from Oakhampton and surrounds...many of which I think are buried in the Oakhampton cemetry... is there a Historical Society group that we can access to find out more about them and does the local church hold old records... Thank you in anticipation...
