Rented bikes from Exmouth and travelled up to Topsham to eat at the Pig and Pallet. What a beautiful trail. Plenty of exposure to wildlife and the estuary. What a lovely way to spend the day. We have do the other side from Dawlish to Exeter which is equally stunning. Not a difficult ride. Stunning

This was a great ride. We parked at Starcross and caught the ferry to Exmouth with our bikes. Ferry is very expensive at £22 for 2 adults, 2 children and 4 bikes and we had to lug bikes up and over the railway bridge and then down lots of steps to get to the ferry. Not even a bike gutter available. At Exmouth when leaving the ferry there are no signs to show where to get onto the trail so it took us a while to find. The trail is described as mostly flat but it's quite hilly in places, especially near train stations. There are some lovely board walks that have been created. Coming back on the other side of the estuary was much better with almost 100% flat riding back to Starcross apart from the bridge over the railway but this did have a rideable slope. It's 15 miles from Exmouth to Starcross and just under 20 if continuing to Dawlish. Very steep hill from Dawlish Warren to Dawlish. Route is well signposted in 95% of places but a couple missing and in particular no signs around the ferry at Exmouth. Surface is 100% tarmac so suitable for any bikes. Some really nice villages along the route and plenty of pubs if you want them.

We stayed at Lympstone Manor and used their bikes to ride the trail from their grounds, turning right onto the trail and going up the side of the estuary to Lympstone, Dart Farm and then Topsham
Pretty easy riding (on vintage bikes!) couple of climbs in and out of Topsham
Maybe 8 miles round trip? We could have continued in the other direction once back at the manor to go into Exmouth but Gin and tonics beckoned!
Nice views and villages - not that bothered by Dart Farm to be honest

I cycled approx 17 miles, starting from my bike hire place at Dawlish Warren.
I went across the Starcross Ferry (bit pricey but a lovely little trip).
It was quite hard having to carry my bike up the steps/over bridge to get to the ferry.
Scenery was lovely & there were nice villages to stop in en route on the first part of the journey.
I found signage for the cycle route to be a 'bit lacking & confusing' in areas on the first part of the route. Getting off the ferry, there was nothing so I wasted time cycling around trying to find a sign & needed to ask people in the end.
Signage also seemed a bit lacking when you approached any of the villages.
There was a section where I had no choice but to get myself onto the main road. This was pretty hilly so I had to get off the bike on several occasions. There was no pavement so lorries & other traffic just had to wait until I'd got to the top.
This spoiled my experience a bit sadly.
Return journeys on the Starcross ferry were not allowed with bikes (lack of space) so it was 'all or nothing' on the trail.
The 2nd ferry upstream didn't operate on Tuesdays so you had to cycle up to Bridge road to get across so that you could cycle back on the other side.
This part of the route was much easier. Signs were very clear and obvious. It was very flat.

We started off in Dawlish Warren and then crossed over to Exmouth by ferry before heading north along the estuary. We stopped off in Topsham for lunch, clapped the rowers on the river in Exeter and then cycled back down the other side towards Dawlish Warren to return the rental bikes.
The views are definitely better on the Exmouth side of the estuary as the Dawlish side has embankments. Lots of places to stop, refuel (cafes etc) and almost all off the route was off the road so only had to watch out for walkers and dogs. We took it easy with the pace and made a day of it. Exeter is a beautiful place and the weather was perfect for us.

There is a cycle path all the way from Exmouth around the Exe Estuary to Dawlish. I have only walked the section from Exmouth to Topsham. This section can be enjoyed equally on foot or cycle. There is also a foot path running along the estuary here, which I think uses parts of the cycle path, and goes closer to the water in places. However it was closed for repair when we visited.( May2019 ). The cycle path is well surfaced with no mud or potholes. There are some sections which use the public highway, but to be honest they are very quiet and almost traffic free. These are at Lympstone, Exton and just before getting to Topsham. If you have small children just be aware of these stretches and use common sense. It shouldn't be any problem at all if one grown up is at the front and one at the rear. There is interpretation/maps along the way providing interesting information about the estuary, and ample opportunity to take breathtaking photos. There is a very well worth visiting RSPB hide just before reaching Topsham which would be a good place for a break. Lympstone, with a lovely little harbour, tea shops and pubs is about half way and a good spot for a break. You will also pass to the rear of the training centre for the Royal Marines Commandos at Lympstone. Here you can see first hand what it takes to become the best soldier anywhere. ( they do shout a bit and do soldiery things) I had trouble finding the starting point so I will try to explain. In Exmouth find the roundabout at the end of the A376, where it meets Imperial Road. Head North up the A376 ( Marine Way ) on the left side of the road,(safer than crossing later ) with the railway station on your left. Walk about 0.3 of a mile, or about five minutes to where the road starts to bend to the right. Look to your left to see the start of the Trail. GPS 50.625N 3.425W or OS Grid SY000815. Whether on foot or bike it's quite a trip so take ample water and clothing for any change in weather. It helps if cyclists ding bells to let walkers know they are approaching and walkers need to be spatially aware that cyclist may approach from the rear. For anyone who has over indulged in the many pubs and tea shops in Topsham, there is a regular bus back to Exmouth, number 57. A google search will reveal where you can hire bikes near the start in Exmouth and where to park. Plan your trip and you will have a great day.

All family members loved this. We managed Dawlish to Exmouth and caught the ferry back to star cross in half a day with a family of four.
Fantastic ride through different landscapes and mostly flat apart from the last couple of miles into exmouth, great for young children

Did this ride yesterday, started off brilliantly from Dawlish Warren, gorgeous scenery , we saw herds of deer in the grounds of Powderham castle , what amazing views !! Great tarmac track , got up to bridge over river Exe into Exeter and loads of traffic to contend with, we didn’t like cycling through Topsham on the main roads and really didn’t feel safe ( perhaps we’d gone the wrong way?). We were able to get back onto proper cycletrack after that and beautiful views again. We decided to catch the ferry back over the estuary from Exeter to Starcross , lovely!!!

Really nice cycle, about 20 miles, which my youngest (9) completed without issue.
Nice views; pleasant and safe route; and satisfying to complete. We started at Dawlish Warren and did the complete route to Exmouth. We then caught the last ferry back to Starcross and had a final, short cycle back to the start.
(Check ferry time's and cost. And you need cash)

Hi. We are coming to Exmouth this weekend (23rd October) and will be bringing the kids bikes with us. Can we hire a bike in Exmouth close to the Exe trail and is the trail entirely traffic free? We want to cycle up to Exton or Topsham but dont want the children cycling on any roads? Thanks, Jo

Bikes for adults can be hired in Exmouth near to the trail. Google for full info. I have just walked the trail from Exmouth to Topsham. The only bit of highway is in Exton, and we never passed a single car on this short section. The rest of the trail is lovely to walk or cycle, fairly flat reasonably wide and well surfaced. No mud no potholes. It passes the back of the Commando training centre, and you just might hear some shouting. Aside from that very tranquil in between the odd train. Plenty of views over the estuary and very nice pubs on the way. If you study the maps and interpretation as you go and use sensible precautions for children you should have a really great day out.

If you are walking from the strand area towards the railway station, it is well marked as you go. We walked on the road leaving the station to our left and after a few hundred meters picked up the trail. it was fairly easy to find, but the maps don't help. Once you are on the trail there are good maps along the way, with interpretation about the area.
