the steps need repairing, the grass needs cutting, the flower beds need weeding and thr hedges need trimming, but it has the Prison Museum entrance and that's very interesting to see

Benches were lovely to rest and very quiet. Didn't hear anything at all from the Prison .
It's obvious that at one time the gardens would have been beautiful.

We were walking the coast path around Portland when we came across the Jailhouse gardens and cafe so decided to stop for coffee.
We were also tempted into having a scone with our coffee for an extra pound by the very pleasant young lady who was running the cafe. Very nice!
Had we not been walking we may have purchased some fruit and veg or a few of the items that had hand crafted by the prisoners.
Well worth a visit. But only open fri through to sun.

After visiting the museum we walked round this garden, a large space, trees and flower borders. Memorials to several people who had died-various ages, did they die in prison here ? Framework of one large greenhouse, another large one that maybe is used? Potential for growing vegetables/fruit/flowers etc but not much happening which seemed a pity, maybe too early in the year, but it did all look a bit unloved

Lovely peaceful and well kept gardens, there are some information boards explaining the history of the gardens - there are also some memorial stones for Officers, very moving place.

I came across the gardens on a guided walk to the potential old quarry site for Jurassica. They made a point of routing us through to show the other side of the Prison complex. It's a constant labour of love for someone and is remarkable to me because of the fossil wall bout into the raised beds. Interesting detailed info from other TAs and if in this area and make it part of a trip to the jail cafe and viewing the Verne Citadel

We visited the gardens whilst looking for a nearby geocache, we liked the feel of the place and could see it was still a work in progress. There were only a few people playing bowls as we walked through, then we enjoyed the views over the end wall to the sea.

The garden is in need of much work but the prison museum in the grounds is marvellous and the curator is enthusiastic and knowledgeable

To anyone reading this, I sentence you to an hour or so happily exploring these gardens in the shadow of Portland's Young Offender Institution.
The prison itself opened in 1848 and it was used for adult convicts until 1921 when it became a borstal. It has been a YOI since 1988, holding young men aged 18-21.
The gardens, originally laid out in the style of a French Palace Garden, didn't enjoy such close attention as the prison inmates and, while they were referred to in 1873 as "a pretty flower garden" attached to the governor's house, they fell into disrepair in the 1900s.
Fortunately the area has recently been transformed into a popular community garden worked on by everyone from young offenders and conservation volunteers to schoolchildren.
The new lease of life includes everything from a bright and clean children's play area to school allotment and memorial areas as well as a pond surrounded by wild plants raised from seed collected on the island.
Those planning a visit need to be aware that there is no parking for some distance either side of the entrances, but 50 metres to the left there is level access through a car park for the disabled.
More able bodied people driving to the site must track down a space either some way past the gardens or, a better idea, in the streets a few hundred metres before reaching the entrance.
Those enjoying the nearby coastal footpath can easily pop in and enjoy the gardens from that route which is clearly marked at the bottom of the gardens near a bowling green.
My visit had to be postponed for several hours because of a cloudburst, but when I got there everything looked green and lush as I went through the entrance and down some steps.
On my left was a memorial border leading to a prison museum while straight ahead there was a path leading to a horse chestnut tree with a picnic table under it.
To left and right were some narrow trough-like areas planted with lovely flowers and there were large grass areas to left and right, several palms and any number of benches to sit on almost everywhere I went.
I kept walking straight ahead and an allotment area and large greenhouses appeared on the left while there was a pond on my right.
Further down still you reach the bowling green and, if you walk past, you reach stone walls by the coast path over which are views of the sea.
You can then retrace your steps a few metres before looping round and back up the other side of the garden past picnic areas and up to the children's play area.
One thing that is immediately noticeable about the gardens is their peace. I suppose that close to the coast and with the gardens set well below road level at the top, there is precious little noise to disturb visitors. A lovely place to come and relax and such a historical one too.
