This was my second visit to this very old church and I was so pleased to return, two years after my initial visit. This time I took a closer look at the medieval wall paintings on the north wall of the chancel, illustrating the story of St Martin. There is a fine effigy of Laurence of Arabia, and an excellent explanation of its features. Every Wednesday there is a service of Holy Communion held here. I am so pleased that this lovely little Saxon church is still in regular use, and hope to return one day.

Tall but small inside Saxon church to the north of the centre of Wareham. Internally the church is far more interesting than you would suppose from the exterior, with some detailed but difficult to decipher wall murals, a small sanctuary. In the north transept is the effigy of T.E. Lawrence ( of Arabia fame) the enigmatic WW1 hero. There is a real peace and charm about this ancient church

This was an excellent venue to visit. I particularly liked the grave yard as it had Commonwealth graves, extremely interesting. I didn't have time to go into the church but I believe it is well worth it

Lovely little church which sits on the Saxon walls. Quite plain outside, but looks nice inside, after peeking through the window. Shame it wasn’t open when we visited but I’m assuming it’s because of covid 19.

As other reviewers have said you have to get the key from a gent's outfitters on the high street. The church is Anglo-Saxon, mostly plain white walls but has 12th century frescoes of St Martin cutting his cloak in two to give to a beggar:the fresco is faded but it's possible to see part of this scene. There is also an 18th century Royal Coat of Arms over the chancel arch. In addition the church has the tomb of TE Lawrence who lived nearby but is buried in Moreton churchyard. The monument was designed for St Paul's cathedral but was rejected because Lawrence is shown in Arab dress.

If you have to obtain the key from the shop in the high street when the church is locked up, it is really worth doing so. This edifice is so full of atmosphere with its wall paintings and Saxon architecture you can feel quite overcome with emotion at first and then you begin to appreciate the sheer fact of its quiet existence in these noisy and troubled times. Not to be missed and well worth a special journey.

If you are into History then please go to this church. Besides being over 1000 years old ... yes 1000 ... beautiful frescoes, the simplicity of a time before religion became clean and pristine. Besides the history there is also another more recent piece of history. T.E Lawrence's effigy in Portland stone which if you love the idea of Lawrence of Arabia then this is a must see, but don't forget Clouds Hill (where he lived) and Moreton (where he is buried).

I saw that the door to the church was open so took the opportunity to see inside. It really is a pretty church, quite small but very lovely. Beautiful faded frescoes and the impressive sculpture on the far wall as you enter make this a must visit.

You would need to get the key back to the shop for their closing time, so I suppose around 5pm. I think that they have an early closing day too.
