This is a hidden gem within Forres. Set on the hill behind the main park it has a gentle path up to the tower . The area around the tower is fantastic for walking your dog or just for a stroll.

The tower itself looks pretty lame to be fair as its pebble dash and I do not like that. But don't let that put you off from coming here. The views make it worth it- they are absolutely gob smacking. If only the tower was open better times other than 2 till 4 because it would've been better.

We drove into Forres, parked in the car park behind the Co-op and walked across Grant Park to Cluny Hill. It's then a lovely walk through the trees to the tower. The guide books tell you to park in Grant Park car park but we did it like this because it added to the walk and we didn't have to park again in the town for the 'obligatory' coffee afterwards! Don't be put off by some reviews which tell you how steep the climb is. We're not great walkers but found it absolutely fine! When you get to the tower which is at the summit of Cluny Hill there are lovely views out to Findhorn Bay. Apparently, the tower has getting on for 100 steps so the views are going to be even better from the top. We were only in Scotland for the winter and unfortunately, therefore, couldn't see inside. But even so, it was well worth the visit. As we came down we saw the edge of the War Memorial. We branched off to it and walked round. That, too, is very pretty. Then, for coffee we went into Cafe 1496 on the High Street. It was really strong - even for us - and could have done with being served in slightly bigger cups. But at £2 and a great taste we were hardly going to grumble! All in all, a very enjoyable three hours spent.

Well worth a visit as you pass by an old cemetary on the way to the tower. Once you reach the top there are some beautiful views ... were too early to gain access to the tower.

One hour trip - 20 mins up the hill.
Run by great volunteers - opens 14:00 I recall for a couple of hours.
On Sunday the (older) Chap was welcoming and very chatty- proud of the history.

Got to be worth a visit

We were very lucky the day we visited here as it was a clear day. However I don’t think that would of mattered, as the volunteers at this tower were brilliant. The lady welcoming us at the bottom was so inviting and showed genuine interest in all visitors. The gentleman at the top, was so informative and knowledgeable, he made us feel so welcome. I would recommend this to everyone.

Nelson Tower was built purely to celebrate Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and as such seems to serve no real useful purpose. however, having said that it is well run and maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. If you wish to visit it then be prepared for a very steep walk up through the woods to get to it. I have seen cars on a number of occasions coming down from it but most people seem to like the walk. The tower itself consists of just a couple of floors with not much of interest in them before you get to the top to take in the fantastic views of Forres and environs. They did have to cut down a number of trees to allow visitors to get a good view of Findhorn Bay which is a bit of a shame. All in all it's worth a visit just to see what it's all about but don't expect to be awestruck by it and if you've got a medical condition that can be exasperated by walking up steep hills the try to drive up instead of walking.

We timed our visit well this afternoon, as the tower is only open to visitors from 2-4pm from April to September.
After playing in Grant Park (more on that later), our kids decided they wanted to explore the forest in Forres. After scrambling up the hill (a fun way to get to the top), we came across the tower - don’t worry, there is a proper path up, which we followed back down!
A volunteer at the bottom of the tower gave us a brief rundown on the history of the landmark and invited us to climb the tower, radioing the volunteer at the top to expect us. It is a steep climb, but there are 2 rest stop rooms along the way, each featuring a small exhibition with further information on the tower and Nelson himself. The kids were given a little quiz to complete using information found in this room.
At the top of the tower, we were met by another volunteer, full of local information and a pair of binoculars pointing out some of the local landmarks.
All in all the tower is a great place to visit and well worth throwing a couple of pounds in the donations bucket at the front door. Even if you are unable to climb the steep, narrow, winding staircase, there are some great views of Forres and the surrounding areas from the base of the tower and the top of the hill.
The only dampener on the day was that the schools were finished by the time we got back to the bottom of the hill and some local kids in the play park were bullying some of the smaller ones - not just mine - by not letting them use the play facilities while their parents watched on without intervening.

Firstly i would like to say to those who negatively reviewed this;
The information about what it is, why it is there, how much it cost, who built it; run it etc etc; is available if you bother to read the information on the various floors of the tower.
For us as a family it was an pleasant if somewhat calorie destroying walk to the tower, there are benches along the route should it prove to much and a rest is required, we had some inclement weather but the views from atop the tower were very well worth the climb, i was talking to one of the volunteers (Cherry Thornhill) who was very knowledgeable about the history of the place while my Husband was ascending to the top of the tower!

My husband took to The NelsonTower where he had been many times in his younger days. The two volunteers, gentleman at the door and woman at the top where very helpful and informative. My husband was amazed that the lady at the top lived at same places his father did as both were in the RAF. Although there are many stairs there are two places to have a rest and read up on the tower before reaching the top. Excellent views well worth a visit.
