‪Peatfire Tales

An atmospheric insight into mysterious Orkney - a 'must' visit destination

945735815

Lynn Barbour is an an amazing storyteller, a knowledgeable and informative folklore artist, I highly recommend her Peatfire tales for an atmospheric insight into Orkney traditions and beliefs. Also highly recommended are her podcasts - so if you are an armchair traveller you do not miss out on island life and history!‬

‪A thoroughly enjoyable evening! As Scottish expats visiting from the US, my mother and I discovered this by chance online, and were not disappointed. Lynn, the storyteller and host, was a delight. Her passion for the preservation of these tales is undeniable, and we were very impressed with her storytelling talent. Through this ability, she gave us a magical glimpse into the lives of those who passed these stories down through generations. My only regret is not getting there earlier, so I could have looked through her collection of relevant literature and photographs more! A lot of work has been put into the Center to add to the atmosphere and experience.
I love supporting people who are passionate and dedicated to preserving local culture.
Great job, would highly recommend to my friends and family if/when they visit Orkney! (It was nice of Harray the cat to join us after the conclusion too.)‬

‪We absolutely love the atmosphere set up here, we were all enthralled by the storyteller and her tails. We were worried our 8yo might fall asleep or be bored but all 3 of our kids loved it and kept referring back to the stories (8, 12, and 23 yo). We would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Orkney. We will be back.‬

‪If I was asked to recommend one thing I enjoyed most about my trip to Orkney it would be this.
Our group were enthralled by not only the stories but the manner in which they were told.
I would have liked more time listening to tales of the history.
Well done, I would really recommend you go.‬

‪If you have experienced traditional storytelling you will be disappointed. We should have left as soon as we were met by the host. Grumpy, condescending, bragging how special he was, pointing out how expensive his flasgstones are...we should have run. The 2 hours, traps you, a endurance test with no exit. The house was full of the normal hippy tell tell sign, too much incense, tacky witch ornaments. even the peat fire had no traditional peat burning. The story teller Lynn had a beautiful singing voice, but the over the top witchy garb, the ridiculous hand movements, monotone dragged out tales ( which were made out to be only from Orkney, which I've heard versions all over Scotland)made the evening cringworthy.
The toast made, no refreshments offered to the paying guests, the 25 minute sales pitch for other stuff, all combined to make it a total rip off, by a couple who seem only in it for the cash. Save your money, and don't bother.‬

‪We discovered this event by accident and managed to get to Sandwick in time for the Tales to begin. The performance started and Lynn the storyteller took us back in time to a world of myths and legends. This was oral history at its best as she helped us understand life in this context before the strictures of modern life restricted the imagination. A wonderful evening allowing a peak into a way of living that has just about disappeared.‬

‪Prepare to suspend reality as you step back in time at Via House and allow Lynn to weave her magic drawing you in to an ancient time and place steeped in trowlies, fin folk and magical lands. This evening of storytelling was atmospheric and captivating set in a room which was simply a story teller’s paradise - a burning fire, lanterns, chairs in a semi-circle, creepie stools, props of all kinds. You can only begin to imagine the wealth of stories Lynn has to tell and we thoroughly enjoyed the ones she told that evening delving back into times past when not everything had a rational explanation and people gathered in the dark evenings around just such a fire telling tales of adventures on land or at sea and keeping alive the names, customs and traditions of their ancestors. So important to keep alive the oral culture! Well worth a visit!
John and Lynn were welcoming, attentive and very knowledgeable hosts.
John also took us on a walking tour of Stromness the next day which proved to be extraordinarily interesting and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in finding out more about the history of Stromness and its people.‬

‪We went to the “Peat Fire Tales” as part of our fourth holiday in Orkney and, to be honest, given that we had a great fire in our accommodation, we’d have probably been better saving ourselves an almost two-hour round trip and just staying by it.

We hadn’t read any of the reviews online (mistake, perhaps) but we’d picked up a flyer and went on the information on it. The evening turned out to be not at all what we expected and here’s why...

1. The fire may have seen a wee bit of peat at some point but mostly it was fuelled by wood. The “aroma” in the room seemed to come from burning incense and paraffin lamps (one of which resulted in one of our group having a thumping headache).

2. The mention of Orkney chairs on the flyers was one of the hooks for us but please don’t go expecting to be sitting on one while listening to the stories. There are two in the “library” and their chief function seems to be to allow the host to tell you how much you’d have to pay if you’d like to be lucky like him and own one too. The same goes for the flagstone floor in the other pre-story holding area (£8000+, apparently, should you be interested!).

3. Please don’t expect a warm welcome. The host is, at best, awkward with people and at worst, rude. I was called a softy southerner because I chose initially to keep my coat with me. I suspect he probably thought a comment like that was funny but it came across as smug and superior – and that impression was only consolidated as the evening went on. As I say, I suspect awkwardness was at the heart of this guy’s terrible customer-facing manner but he does himself and the reputation of Scotland as a welcoming place no favours. He should pay someone else to do his Meet and Greet. This venture is obviously making plenty cash for the couple involved – he could afford to pay someone more competent to offer a warm welcome.

4. The stories were much longer than we expected - no bad thing in itself - but a break in between stories would have given me a chance to bring my husband back to the land of the living, sleep having overtaken him early on in proceedings. Quite how he fell asleep given the highly dramatic telling of the stories, I have absolutely no idea.

5. Don’t expect to get away without a sales pitch. Lynn, the storyteller, is applying for funding for a project and, post-stories, there was a 20min+ pitch for why the work is vital and a plea for contributions of some kind.

It was a pity the evening turned out as it did for us because we all feel strongly that storytelling is an important part of the tradition of many cultures, including our own Scottish heritage. There was little that felt traditional about this evening, however, other than the stories themselves. There was much that felt forced, false, tacky and money-making. I was left feeling ashamed that folk from other countries might be left thinking that this event was representative of storytelling or of Scottish people.

‪Held in the "nineteenth-century" style Still Whiskey Room at the Stromness Hotel, anyone attending is in for a special evening of storytelling. The intimate setting, accommodating only about 20 people, is perfect for engaging listeners in the old tales of the finfolk and the selkies. The storyteller is captivating, the complimentary dram smooth and refined. The stories are told dramatically and last about 20-25 minutes each. Get off the beaten path and learn more of the culture of Orkney through hearing its legends and tales. Highly recommended. check for days and times, not offered every evening‬
