When folks talk about NC500, they all mention Applecross Road or Bealach na Ba Road. It’s certainly a famous and well-known drive when you come over the Bealach na Ba pass, you won’t be disappointed, even after already having driven most of the North Coast 500. I was still impressed with the descent from this pass.

There's something about adventure about it. Single track road, i.e. single lane with avoidance. Many idiots act like the axe in the forest and want to force a "right of way". Once at the top:
What a magnificent view. You can even see the Isle of Skye. Just driving up there is an adventure and definitely worth it. The view from there is breathtaking. But dress well, it's very windy and cold up there.
Photos while driving? I'm afraid not.

Omg I could drive this up and down all day long !! I absolutely loved every bit of it!! My friend ….. hated it….. I’ve never seen anyone so scared !! We did both ways….. I drove while she clung onto the seat and the door hyperventilating 😂 there are plenty of spots to park in (please….not the passing places!!) to get out of your vehicle to take pictures and enjoy the view!! It’s not for everyone, my friend was an example of this, but if you’re a confident driver, and can reverse….. you’ll love it!!

We missed this road on the first day as it seemed pointless in pouring rain and low cloud. However, the next day was clear so we went back from Gairloch and it was well worth the effort. The road is generally single track with passing places and has a couple of tight hairpins but should not provide any issues to a half competent driver. Great views but only in fine weather, otherwise give it a miss.

The views were unreal. I was abit apprehensive after reading Google reviews of the road however we didn't have any issues (and we were in a motorhome!). There are a couple of hairpin bends which we got round no problem without needing to reverse (unlike a car driver who was on the road at the same time). The road is very narrow so be mindful of oncoming traffic. Its a stunning road and you must drive it if you are in the road

We drove to this road from ullapool on the road via lochcarron. The road to the viewpoint is very pretty. The road itself upto the baelach na ba viewpoint is very twisty and turny, but think there are only 3 hairpin bends. Two uphill and one down. There was a lorry up there who had to do 3 point turns to get around the hairpin bends. We did it in a transit van and it was fine, just make use of the passing places. I was a little nervous but overall it was fine. As long as you can drive and manoeuvre your vehicle with confidence you’ll be fine. Basically if a car is coming the other way be prepared you might have to reverse back into a passing place (which could be around a bend).
The viewpoint itself was underwhelming compared to the stunning views of the road upto the viewpoint. That is where the main character is…on the road up and down to the viewpoint.
We then continued our route to applecross and followed the coastal road all the way back to torrindon and upto Ullapool. That took around 2 hours but was so beautiful and remote. The only downside to this route was that there weren’t really any parking places or stopping points. The scenery was that spectacular but there was nowhere to safely stop your car to admire it (unless you were blocking a passing place). It was a beautiful drive but we missed not being able to get out and admire it in the solitude of the outdoors.

Took my breath away. It was hard as I am scared of heights but well worth it. Did not come back down went the coast road instead. Love my country. X

To anyone wishes to cross the Bealach na Ba - this really is not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for someone with even a moderate fear of heights!
I would love to give five stars, but unfortunately I was not in a position to really appreciate the wonderful views on offer.
The problem with this road, as with many along the so-called 'NC 500', is that the level of traffic is simply not sustainable for a road of this size.
What's more, in spite of the warning signs, people still insist on crossing it in motorhomes and other oversized vehicles, which can generate chaos. There are passing places, but people either use them incorrectly (or not at all), or can't fit in, and this combined with the amount of vehicles on the road, means that you may find yourself queuing.
In turn, you might find yourself at a complete stop, halted next to a cliff-edge over a ravine, which can be... unpleasant. Admittedly, I have a fear of heights, but it can very quickly turn into a stressful experience, and one that can last an unbearably long time depending on traffic levels.
That said - one you're past the midway point, and on the way over the other side, the views really are spectacular, and surely some of the best on offer in the Highlands. After all, it's one of the highest roads in Scotland. What's more, you're rewarded with Applecross itself, a beautiful town on the edge of Applecross Bay. You can stop off at the Applecross Inn for a well-earned drink to steady your nerves!
Absolutely worth seeing, but if you are going to visit, please remember (and also bear these in mind along the rest of the NC 500!):
- Use the passing places correctly
- Be considerate of other motorists, not to mention cyclists
- Obey the signs
- If you're not sure it's for you, take the alternative route

Not as daunting as you may think, we did it in a fully laden 7.3 metre Motorhome and 2 labradoodles, luckily it was brand new 170 bhp and automatic, wife was terrified but I loved it.
As you enter to go to Applecross it seems just narrow and easy, you see the oil rig in the bay and things get better, the slopes get steeper and steeper, you can see in the distance if someone has stopped and pulled in for you so can speed up and go for it. The 3 hairpins are tight but manageable in one go.
Only issue was one arrogant old guy in his hatchback who wouldn’t reverse 20 yards after driving past the passing place, I had to reverse 50 yards downhill to the next one.
Apart from that it’s a superb drive, just take your time.

What an amazing drive and absolutely stunning views from the top. It’s not easy ( we did in a 6.9m motorhome) but take it slow and carefully and it’s great fun

Hi There
Should there be any concerns for someone doing the climb who is confident behind the wheel but suffers from vertigo - eg any hairpin bends with a sheer drop to one side perhaps ?
TIA

Are the passing places suitable for a 6m campervan
The signs tell you no camper and or caravans to go over. There is another option further along the road just before sheildaig that any vehicle can use

I have an old albeit in good condition Fiat Punto, 160,000 on the clock. Would it be safe to attempt this road in such a car or is a more sturdy car recommended?
I think you would probably be fine, there are some tight bends combined with height, but it's definitely do-able!

Hi,
With the World currently shut, I have a bit more time to plan what i hope will be a visit here 2021 Northern Summer. We want to drive part of the North Coast, and wondering if it is better - view wise particularly to drive the Pass toward Applecross or starting from Applecross? My original plan was to come around the Coast road to Applecross, and drive out toward Lochcarron, but don't want to spend the journey trying to resist looking behind us, if it is better to drive in the opposite direction. I realise there is a great viewpoint on top, and come from Australia, so happy to sit on the right hand side of the car and stick toward the left of the road! any views appreciated. Thanks, Rob

There I go again. I was looking back WEST toward Applecross. Oh well, you get the gist.

Hi
where is the best place for a b&b then travel around that area.?
Sheildaig is lovely and has a good pub and restaurant. Applecross is lovely too but I think its not a good base, unless you like the hairy drive on a regular basis! We stayed in a lodge in Achintraid, just outside of Kishorn for 1 week, a few miles from Lochcarron (see Wilderness Cottages). But I would recommend staying somewhere less isolated as its nice to have facilities when the weather is bad (as it was with us last year).

I am wondering whether we should do the NC500 clockwise or anti-clockwise - scenery wise is one better than the other. We have been places where if you approach from one direction the view unfolding in front of you is amazing whereas if you come from the other direction it is behind you as such. Don't want to make school boy error! Hope to do this over Easter period 2017. Thanks

The only thing I can suggest is to do it twice and make up your own mind. It is fantastic both ways. Sorry I can't be anymore helpful

Has anyone done this in a VW T5 Transporter campervan? We have the 102bhp 2.0TDI diesel. It's handled both the Honister and Hardknott/Wrynose passes in the Lakes, so just wondering if the 1 in 20 bits on here will present any real problems. Cheers in advance for replies/help.
No problem I've driven it in a camper van. You just have to be careful to look ahead for cars coming the other way. The passing spaces are small and it won't be easy to start on the slope.
