‪Set just a few miles from the main A90 this lovely part of Scotland set at the foot of the Angus
Glens is especially worth a visit in May, when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in bloom
Beautiful scenery, lovely walks with a car park in the village of Cortachy nearby.
A real treat if you like beautiful scenery with a lovely Scottish Castle as a backdrop
A rare Scottish gem

‪The Garden wasn't open last year and there's no indication that it will open 2016.
The Earl and Countess have moved out of Cortachy Castle and no-one seems to have taken over their responsibilities. What a pity!!!‬

‪Once a year, for 80 years, these gardens have been opened to the public in benefit of charity. The gardens and grounds are beautiful; the azaleas alone are worth the trip - their perfume pervades the whole garden and there are many more interesting and beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs which make a walk around interesting and enjoyable even to those who are not particularly interested in gardening. The afternoon teas, served in the castle are excellent and with sandwiches, scones, cakes and a "bottomless cup" for tea are good value. The plant sale is an excellent way to take home a memory of the day - we took home an azalea for a very reasonable price and hope it will thrive in our garden and bring back happy memories of our days spent at Cortachy Castle gardens.
I've been going there with my husband for many years and intend to go back every first Sunday in June for as long as we're able!‬

‪we spent the afternoon here on Scotlands garden scheme on the 31 st May 2014. The rhododendrons were spectacular in size as well as colour. The laburnums were also beautiful making a splash of bright yellow against the pinks and oranges of the other plants . There was a pipe band playing in front on the striking building and the Earl was seen wandering around chatting with the visitors. We didn't stop here for a cup of tea but we were lucky that the weather was sunny and dry. It was £5.00 to get in but was a charity collection so we didn't mind.‬

‪What a wonderful day we spent at this grand castle set in the country. The river nearby set off the estate with wonderful mature trees in great variety in the parkland. The local highland dancers put on a great display by the youngsters - some very young. The pipes and drums played to welcome the crowds to this wonderful open day hosted by the Earl and the Countess who was in charge of the teas.‬

‪We went to the open day on Sunday 5th June, it cost £5 per adult to go into the grounds and we received one cheap photocopy of a map between us. But fair enough, we got to park and could wander around the gardens at leisure, though it was bitter cold weather which spoiled it.
What was a rip off though, was tea in the castle itself. Another £5 per adult. We sat at a table which was set for five, there was one small plate of sanwiches, one small plate of cheap nasty value shop bought cakes, a small plate of sliced fruit bread with cheap nasty margarine I thought was no longer available after WW2. Cups which staff filled with tea for us at the table.
My friend and I helped ourselves to sandwiches which were going stale, they must have been made hours in advance and left open to the elements. Cheap nasty fillings, they were gross. I didn't go near the cakes, though my friend helped themselves.
Then one of the staff approached our table with other people in tow to seat them, and then it dawned on us that the plates laid out were not for us two, but should have been for five people! This was implied by the look on her face when she looked at the plates and then us. We had eaten the sandwiches, eight tiny things with no crusts on them between us, how utterly greedy we were lol. My friend had demolished most of the cakes and we'd set about the fruit bread. Grudginly it seemed we were asked if we would like more tea. Well as the ration had been half a cup, we readily accepted this offer of another half a cup. This was like dishwater.
On relection, we would have been better to leave the table when we took our first bite of the stale bread, complained and got out tenner back.
Just because the castle is graciuosly opened to the public doesn't mean they have the right to serve such substandard food. If this had been 50p each, well we could have accepted it but a fiver each! Perhaps we were paying for the privilege of sitting in the old fashioned styled drwaing room/lounge areas who knows?
We've been there about 4 times now, and we recall in the past that it was cheaper and they made up funds by having a duck race and tombola. They also sell plants.
Our small community fundraisers are run by us volunteers who make delicious sandwiches, bake proper home made cakes and make lovely pots of tea and coffee.
Cortachy should do the same.
3 years it rained, and this year it was freezing, so we decided as we drove away that we won't return another year.‬
