This museum is a little gem with friendly staff. It is not large but has masses of local stuff and in particular the section on WWII is particularly interesting.
An exhibition about fairy tales has been expended which is a bonus and worth visiting before it closes.

Lovely little museum dedicated to Stranraer’s history and the surroundings. I kinda breezed past the archeological section but found the industrial and wartime topics of more interest. Entry is free.

We were staying in Stranraer for a few days in June 2021 and one afternoon we decided to visit this museum. We were unaware that because of the COVID restrictions in place at the time that visits were by appointment only. However when we arrived there were no visits booked so we were allowed admittance provided that we could complete our tour in about 30 minutes.
While there is much to see about the early history of the area and a lot of agricultural exhibits from around the 17th Century onwards, my primary interest was in seeing exhibits relating to the role of the adjacent Loch Ryan during the Second World War, and in the years immediately following. This was because during my employment in the Scottish Office in the late 1990s I spent a couple of years working on the dumping legacy of surplus redundant munitions into the designated sea disposal site and surrounding area within the Beaufort's Dyke deep water trench in the North Channel. I also have more than a passing interest in the range of other military activities that took place in the area.
There was one other pair of exhibits worthy of particular mention. This is the painting of the sinking of the passenger ferry the 'MV Princess Victoria' in gale force weather conditions on 31 January 1953 and the George Cross awarded phosthumously, to David Broadfoot GC, the ship's Radio Officer who stayed at his position. even though the ship was sinking, sending messages to shore stations to enable them to locate the ship. The George Cross medal was donated to the museum by Officer Broadfoot's descendants a number of years ago.
Well worth visiting if you are interested in the history of the area.

We came here on a dull damp Monday afternoon and I think we had the Museum to ourselves. It was very quiet, however ,we enjoyed our visit here. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly and provided us with information on the museum and the best route to take to look at the collection. The museum is thoughtfully laid out and contains a good variety of local artefacts, and it seemed much bigger inside than we originally expected.
At the time of our visit there was an Art Exhibition by the Sea Pyot Arts Group on the top floor entitled "The Sea, the sea" . We spent some time looking at the paintings and there was a good variety of work. However, we thought that a number of the artists had visions of grandeur in the amount they were charging for their pictures, truly outrageous in certain cases. A nice collection though.

Spent more than an hour here on a very wet day, but it's well worth a visit anyway. Geology, pre-history, industrial heritage, wartime moments and seafaring. Plus dinosaur exhibition! Modern display s and not tatty! Well done.
