‪An interesting site with a former "picnicking house" and Naval Temple. A good area for a short walk and picnic. Care: the access road is steep and narrow - with limited parking spaces‬

‪Access here is up a steep hill and through lanes, so it is a difficult climb, however it is worth the trouble. There are three points of interest up here: the Naval Temple, the Roundhouse and the former bowling green and stables. The Naval Temple is an interesting and unique monument, one which is very calm and peaceful. The Roundhouse has an interesting history and is interesting architecturally. While it is now holiday accommodation and inaccessible, the views from here are magnificent, even on the misty day we went. Monmouth is clearly visible, as is the surrounding countryside. The former bowling green and stables are of more interest if prior reading has been done, but they are still an intriguing feature. It would have been of greater interest if the roundhouse was a public attraction, however what is here provides a fun trip for anyone who appreciates history and good views.‬

‪As someone who also worked as a volunteer for many years at The Kymin Round House I am also very disappointed that it has been converted into expensive holiday let accommodation.

The one member of staff there, now redundant, worked very hard (often in her own time) with a large team of very dedicated volunteers providing a very positive visitor experience and running a wide range of events, including trails, art events, historical re-enactments and hiring it out for weddings, to ensure that it certainly was not a 'money pit' and was actually financially buoyant.

All the aforementioned volunteers have now been discarded, people who over many years had developed knowlege and passion for The Kymin and its rich history. It was one of the National Trust's earliest acquisitions (top ten) and the first building in Wales. I also live locally and know that this is a cause of sadness to many local people.

The National Trust still purports to be a people orientated charity and not a 'business'. I know I am one of many disenfranchised former NT volunteers who chose to give my time freely to this organisation over a long period of time.

Before long, no doubt N.T. will be putting up railings around the Round House as well as already reducing the disabled parking, not to mention a paying car park for general visitors to the site (this idea has been proposed before but was resisted by locals, staff and volunteers alike).‬

‪Having volunteered for the Trust for nearly 20 years, I recently visited my favourite property, The Kymin Round House, Monmouth, formerly accessible to everyone, saddened to see it being converted into holiday let accommodation and the once beautifully kept grounds looking somewhat unkempt. This used to be a vibrant community hub with a range of events throughout the year, helping to connect the property with the local community and history. The Round House will now only be enjoyed by a few very well-heeled people. All part of the Trust's move over some years now to a more corporate and commercial approach. I'm one of many disenfranchised volunteers and will never volunteer for this organisation again. There are still some very good people working for the Trust at ground level but the way this organisation is being led, frankly beggars belief.
I would also like to point out that the mass redundancies, pushed through by the Trust during the Covid epidemic, shamelessly citing the epidemic as an excuse, was all done under the auspices of Tim Parker as Chairman of Trustees. Of course he has now left the Trust but I would encourage anyone to look up his business record, a private equity tycoon dubbed ‘the prince of darkness’ in the City for his willingness to preside over mass redundancies. He also came to prominence as Chairman of the Post Office due to the Horizon IT scandal. Another indication of the way the National Trust has been choosing to head from the top for some years now.‬

‪We stayed at Kymin Round House for a W/E as the National Trust have decided that the long term protection of this wonderful folly is best served as a holiday let and it will be shortly joined by a conversion of the old Stables close by.

We were extremely fortunate to have dry weather and though Saturday was a dull day Sunday was amazing with a spectacular sunset and then equally stunning sunrise on Monday morning.
The views from this property are wonderful from any window. Downstairs it has the ambience of a cosy little cottage in a wood but upstairs the bedroom and bathroom have been furnished in a boudoir style to celebrate the Regency period when it was built although it's original purpose was purely for dining.

I found it frustrating to block any of the four bedroom windows with drapes as you could lie in a high brass bedstead and see the extensive views all around you as soon as the blinds were raised.
It was a lovely room to wake up in however and hard to drag yourself away from watching the bird life as well as the marvellous views.

We walked down some very steep public footpaths into Monmouth on the Saturday and enjoyed visiting the old court house with the spooky manikins in the cells deep below the building.
The walk and climb back up was challenging to say the least but it was more a case of being unfit on my part. Having had two hip replacements every test always seems a personal achievement and a tribute to orthopaedic medicine.
We drove into Monmouth on the Sunday !!

The Beaulieu Woodland Trust land adjacent is also delightful with mossy boulders and contorted trees giving views through either side being an escarpment.

We have stayed in several folly conversions with the Landmark Trust which have all been a total joy to experience.
Kymin Round House has lent itself to this more easily than many as it has all facilities inside so no trips outside to a separately housed bathroom as with some quirky conversions.

This one is less private than many however and necessitates keeping doors locked and using nets on the ground floor to maintain privacy in daylight hours.
As it is a recent change of use some visitors do not realise it is now private holiday accommodation and try the doors. The National Trust are going to try to do more to address this problem I believe.

It is a romantic and exceptional place to stay in and I think will become very popular so we feel very lucky to have stayed there. We came home Monday way less stressed than when we left on the Friday so thank the National Trust who have kept it so quaint but also so comfortable.

When The Stables open shortly grandparents could book Kymin Round House for two whilst family book The Stables which takes four and has a private enclosed garden.‬

‪The final weekend of February provided ideal weather for an afternoon visit to a National Trust property. After weeks of continuous storms, it was so good to get out, and enjoy clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Our visit was only made possible when my Son (who normally visits on a weekend) had to stay home because of a family emergency.

The unexpected freedom to go somewhere for part of the day, lead us to explore the potential provided by nearby NT properties: and those we hadn’t previously explored. Like …

The Kymin: situated in Wales within a few metres of the border with England, just east of the county town of Monmouth. It is a hill with an 18th Century neo-classical Round House sat on its peak. Completed in 1798, the Round House, within its nine acres of gardens and woodland, features a crenulated two-storey tower, with balconied views, and a woodland walk. The Round House was built as a shelter from inclement weather, by the well-to-do ‘Kymin Club’: a group of principal local Gentlemen who met weekly to picnic. The funding for the project was provided by local landowner The Duke of Beaufort, and eight Members of Parliament. At 800 feet above the river, stunning views of part of the Wye Valley and nearby Monmouth can be enjoyed from the grounds of the Round House. The building was not open when we visited and the NT website fails to provide opening dates. You can, however, see that photos here on TA, are of the interior: so it must be opened occasionally.

Just a few yards from the Round House is a Naval Temple. Built in 1800, as a patriotic symbol to Britain’s naval supremacy; it is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world. Built with funds raised by public subscription, the Temple commemorates 16 British Royal Navy Admirals who had led the British Fleet to significant naval victories in history to date (of construction). Sir Horatio Nelson, with Lady Hamilton, visited here in 1802 after leading the British Fleet in the defeat of Bonapart’s navy at the Battle of the Nile. Three years after his visit Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar.

It was a good day out, and and a site well-worth visiting; the on-site car park is very convenient, but quite small. Fortunately there were not many other visitors; but of those visiting (some of whom picnicked sat on benches with a view) should be admired for taking the walk from Monmouth. It’s only 1.6 miles, but a climb of 800ft; we drove as such a walk would have been well beyond our capabilities!‬

‪This is an interesting and unusual location, at the top of a very narrow road. The views are stunning! There are probably some nice walks, but I wasn't quite up to exploring those: feeling a bit frail, it was a gentle uphill walk from the car-park to the view point and monument. ‬

‪Round House not open at present. Very steep and narrow road. Walking to top is steep but longer less steep walks are available. Walking in this area is very rewarding as scenery is outstanding.‬

‪I happened to walk past it whilst following Offa's Dyke path and stopped briefly to look at the memorial to dead admirals and to admire the view. Other than that, that's it‬

‪This place is a hidden gem . We got married here and the staff were fantastic. Beautiful scenery , old worldly charm and the history of this National Trust property made it the best possible venue to have picked for our wedding. The manager was so helpful and accommodating. 5 stars + from us!‬
