Having discovered that we could drive up the hill and park, this was on our list. Many places are out of our reach as my husband has limited mobility, so this was a real bonus.
The museum is in the grounds of the Castle, but there is little to see of it and not many explanatory boards. The best way to find out more is to visit the museum, where there is so much information about many aspects of Haverfordwest, with a huge range of artefacts and photos. We spent quite a while here and found it most interesting, covering so many different topics. The visit cost us only £2, including parking.
We also saw the building which has been a prison, police HQ, county records office but now lies empty. A pity it cannot be put to good use, or opened for a more extensive museum.

Quirky and obviously small, but worth the visit, although it took a bit of finding in a car. We ended up parking a few streets away and walking back. Don't do this if you can't cope with hills! The position of course has a good view of the town.

Saturday 17 August 19, My husband and I went to visit Haverforwest town museum situated within the grounds of the castle. The museum is in the old prison governor’s house and has an interesting variety of artefacts, prints and paintings which illustrate the history of Haverfordwest over the past 900 years.
Displays on the Augustinian Priory; Music and Music Makers; Roman Artifacts from Pembrokshire; The Rise and Fall of the Haverford west Bank and they even have the cell door, leg irons and the original lock from the castle gate. I found it quite inspiring here so much so that I wrote a poem called ‘Changing Faces’.
We then went to look at the prison building, which was built within Harverfordwest Castle in 1820. The new prison building was erected within the castle grounds, mainly within the inner bailey. It held a capacity of 86 prisoners. In 1878 the remaining inmates were transferred to the gaol in Carmarthen.
The building over the years has been used for many different uses including a police station and council offices. Today it houses the Pembrokeshire Records Office. Mark and I wondered around this impressive castle ruins, prison and museum and took some wonderful and interesting photographs.
This museum is well worth a visit if you are visiting Haverfordwest.

Had a stroll round here to kill some time. All of us found something interesting to look at, the kids enjoyed what was under the stairs! Well worth the money, the volunteer here was so friendly and engaging.

The museum, though small, is full of interesting artefacts and information, particularly related to the adjacent castle and former prison. Exhibits go as far back as Roman times and give a real flavour of the history of Haverfordwest which is not evident from driving/walking through the town centre. The volunteers were friendly and helpful and Simon the Curator was particularly informative. It is well worth driving up the narrow road to the castle, where there is ample free parking.
