As zoos go, Taronga is about a 3/5 for its animals and enclosures - it has a way to go to beat Australia Zoo for example. As a comparison, Aus Zoo’s giraffe and elephant enclosure is easily 10x bigger and we couldn’t help feel that the tiger enclosure seemed a bit small/sad.
But the animals are supported brilliantly by the fantastic views behind them to elevate the whole experience to a 4/5. Seriously, you could take the animals out and still have a gorgeous national park with breathtaking views.
We did also see some species that we’ve never seen before like snapping turtles and some funky snakes and chameleons. The bird show is also a must see as it’s set against the back drop of Sydney harbour!
Facilities-wise, the place could do with some love as a few of the water fountains weren’t working and toilets were quite far away from each other. That’s quite a problem if you start the tour at the top of hill, assume there’ll be a toilet at the bottom and find yourself hiking back up!
Overall, we had a really good day out. The price is pretty fair for the amount that’s crammed in and there’s a fab mix of animals.

Loved the tiger and the giraffes. The zoo is beautifully laid out.
Great variety of animals.
Alot of walking, but they also have lifts.
The views from the zoo overlooking the city is amazing.
Recommend taking water bottle as they have refill stations. Take extra snacks for the kids too.
Worthwhile day out.

Rate 2. Getting of the ferry, the teenage school kids were given preference to get on the buses.us seniors with disabilities had to walk to the bottom entrance. We also observed an older man who had to push his wife in a wheelchair to the bottom entrance. For such a renowned zoo we were surprised at the lack of transport inside the zoo for those who struggle with the steepness of the zoo. Parts of the zoo looked very tired and in need of attention. Would not bother coming back.

Enjoyed our trip. The zoo has some lovely animals particularly the red pandas who were awake and moving about the morning we visited. Staff very helpful and we quickly spent a few good hours here. Loved the ferry trip over to the zoo.

It was a nice day out, lots to see. It’s very big too. The most disappointing this was they wouldn’t take our cash. I was so mad when we went to buy lunch. I couldn’t buy anything at the gift shop either. I’ll boycott any cashless business.

Very nice family oriented zoo with plenty of interesting information and interactive displays. Wonderful experience and had a great time seeing and learning about the animals.

We had a wonderful time the kids absolutely loved it and also both adults did too we had a glorious day with the weather and were able to see almost every animal. Food available was very nice too

Loved this zoo! Getting to it by Ferry is a fun start to the day. Many of the parts of the zoo were done really well - the Tiger Walk especially with the Asian village feel, the jeep to climb into and the grocery store hints at the end (you'll understand when you go). Of course, the giraffes' enclosure had the stunning backdrop of downtown Sydney - wow! A nice mix of animals and a section with the native Australian species (hello free roaming kangaroos and cute koalas!!).
They had a good number of volunteers around who answered questions and quite a few zoo keeper talks were happening throughout the day.
The real downside is there are big hills with no handicapped access or ways to help people with mobility issues. The escalators were all not working :-( I had no trouble but, I found my heart breaking for so many others and kept asking if I could help push wheelchairs and/or strollers for people. I don't think they knew it would be that hard.

Lovely way to spend a couple of hours…so only a morning or afternoon trip, although you could stretch it out by taking a picnic I guess!

Every aspect of our visit was excellent. There is clearly an emphasis on natural habitats and a commendable slant towards conservation. The highlights were watching the elephants having their morning wash and scrub in the elephant barn (including lifting their feet, one at a time, for scrubbing and toe-nail cleaning) and the "free flight birds" session - how on earth do they prompt and train these birds which are free to fly anywhere they choose to do these amazing things on cue? Recommend a visit.

How do you book animal encounters & find times for the various animal talks & shows? I couldn’t find any precise info on their website.

Hi, animal encounters can only be booked on the day. I believe it’s a first come, first served basis. The animal talks and shows run every half an hour or so, you can collect a map on your way in which shows all the times on there.
If you want to see the seal show I suggest lining up half an hour before the show so you don’t miss out as there’s limited seating.

We are flying into Sydney's international airport and staying at the Wildlife retreat Taronga. Is it possible to take public transportation from the airport to the Taronga zoo ?

Yes, public transport is actually the fastest way to the Zoo. First just catch a Public Train from the Airport to Circular Quay. Then just find the Taronga Zoo Wharf for a 12 minute Public Ferry ride direct to the Zoo.

Whats it like during these covid times im guessing no animal encounters? I read on their site they are still doing the bird show with reduced capacity but what about the seal show?

I always like to be positive, particularly about Taronga Zoo as I have been there many times over the years. But my opinion the zoo barely meets a good standard. There is much construction which precludes seeing much of the Savannah enclosures, refreshments/food very hard to get too, one entrance only (top only). So, through no fault of the zoo I think during COVID times I would go elsewhere. Perhaps when some of the restrictions that impact are lifted it would be worth it.... Sorry about that but the zoo is impacted in a big way but only my viewpoint.

There is a concession price for seniors, around 10% off the normal entry price ($43) . Our daughter had the entertainment book luckily which allowed us access to the zoo for $36.75, so it paid for itself really on the day!
The seal show is a hoot, and was great fun for our grandkids to watch. However, get there before the allotted start time as seating can be a bit difficult if you find standing challenging for a half hour show. Plus, do not sit in the front row,it can get a little wet!

Is it best to pre book a ferry ticket & zoo entry before heading to Australia? Is it easy getting to & from the cable car form the ferry?

You should have a reservation for the Zoo if you plan on any special tours or guides. Plus prebooking allows you entry into the cable car. Otherwise you have to take a bus ride to the ticket counter.
As for the Ferry. No need for a reservation. Just walk up and use the opal card. The opal card is Sydney’s train, bus and ferry prepaid entry card. You just add funds to it as needed.
