This set of parks is difficult to reach from the Nashville area - Chatanooga would have been easier. This is not one large park, but several park areas that are far (miles) apart. The trails are nice with beautiful scenery. Not crowded. There are far too many other parks in Tennessee to choose this one.

Visited four separate areas of this large, and very scenic multisite state park. Enjoyed the trails and waterfalls at the Fiery Gizzard and Stone Door areas, and the tranquil Grundy Lakes site. Even in the height of summer vacation, none of the areas were crowded. Be sure to stop at the main park office in Monteagle to pick up maps of the various areas and to get suggestions on what to see. And in the heat of the summer, hike early in the day before the heat gets oppressive.

Beautiful park with an abundance of trails and waterfalls. Recommend stopping in the main visitors center to get maps, directions, and ask about entry points to match your skill level. The Foster Falls and Grundy day loop are scenic and moderately difficult.

I've been to this state park at various times over the past decades. This was the first time I camped at the Stone Door Campground. The first thing to note is that there is about a 5-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot to the campground, so if you're carrying a lot of things you'll need to make multiple trips. The good thing, though, is that you have a lot of privacy being away from the parking lot. We had a great time camping a couple of nights and during the days we walked along several of the trails in the Stone Door and Savage Gulf areas. Beautiful place.

The park is kinda broken up into sections and you have to drive around to the different areas to see them. Get a trail map and use Google maps and figure out your destinations ahead of time. If you’re hiking through on the long hikes then I hear it’s some of the best around and for those of us who aren’t super hikers there’s still plenty to do. There are so many waterfalls and overlooks that you need a very long summer day or a couple days to see them all. Foster Falls and Greeter Falls are gorgeous and have relatively short hikes. Not the easiest even though they’re listed as easy. Big rocks, tree roots and such as typical. Steep paths on rocks that can be tricky in the snow or ice. Stone Door was an overlook that we didn’t get to but will next time. Laurel Falls is there by Stone Door and it was a short little hike but had wooden stairs. There’s so much more. The area is also out there and even though you can find food and gas it’s not like other park area like Gatlinburg or anything so don’t think that. There are some Airbnb’s in the area to rent. I liked the Deer Lick Resorts were you can stay in tiny homes.

Great hiking in Tennessee!
Foster Falls was a short hike, beautiful waterfall with large pool, and a lot of people. Buggy Top Cave hike was longer, but we only saw 1 other couple. Beautiful hike and huge cav mouth- unable to enter though due to sign postings of diseased bats.

Coke ovens everywhere. Some are Well preserved, many others need some TLC. Great stop between Nashville and Chattanoga. Free entry to lands. Also a museum.

State Park. Trees. Birds. Lake with boat rentals. We walked the low-intensity ADA trail around the lake. There's a restaurant we did not check out.

God led us to the main building where we got great advice on where to hike. This park is huge! We drove 30 minutes to our first trail, greeter falls. It was worth it. Kids had a blast climbing over rocks and down a spiral staircase.

We had a couple hours only to spend in the area and we are not hikers. We first stopped at the Visitor Center. It had a lot of great displays and local information on the animals and plants in the park. We discovered that entry to TN State Parks is free. The Rangers were helpful and provided a map. We visited Foster’s Waterfall, short walk and easily accessed from parking area. Heard lots of birds, saw beautiful wild flowers, and variety of trees! This is a beautiful park. Though we saw cars parked in various parking areas, we never saw another visitor.

I intend to do a backpacking trip here as it has been an area on my list for years. Wondering how that would go with weather for the area in Mid-March? I am from Wisconsin so cold isn't an issue, I am worried about snow or rain that month causing problems. I have gear for it, but the people tagging along have only done a few trips and nothing in snow.

We were there last year in mid-March. At that time, the highs were in the upper 40's low 50's. Nights in the upper 30's. We started the day with toboggans, gloves, layers, etc then stripped as the hikes went on. Of course for you, those temps might seem balmy!!! We didn't have rain but rain is hard to predict. I hope you get rain the week before so the waterfalls are pretty. (I do remember a trip there in April a few years ago. It rained every night but nothing during the day.) A March snow would probably be unusual. I hope you have a wonderful time. It is a beautiful place. Be sure to check in with the park rangers. There is a main office on the main road through Monteagle (sorry, I can't remember the hwy #) and there are small offices at most trailheads. I'll be glad to answer any other questions you have.
