A very old wooden bridge, the heritage-listed Kirwans Bridge is 300m in length and over 100 years old, spanning the northern arm of Lake Nagambie.
My wife and I drove our car over this narrow bridge and were glad it did not collapse and also that there were no cars coming from the other side, as it is single lane only.

In reality bit is just a bridge, a good example of an what most country bridges in Australia were once like before concrete bridges replace them.

In the Shire of Strathbogie, on the edge of the Goulburn River is the community of Kirwans Bridge with a population of less than 200 people.
A co-worker and I decided to veer off on the way back to her home depot and we are ever so glad we did. We were both struck by the beauty of the place... stunning, raw... even in the rain we both had to get out to see it closer. It was a grey day, but still the contrasting colours of the trees, the flowers, the lotuses in the waterway...everything spoke to us. But it's more than just a place... there really is a bridge here as well.
The bridge opened in the late 1890's replacing a former bridge/punt and it was named after a local family. This bridge has stood the test of time for over 130 years. When building it , they failed to find bedrock in the deepest part of the river and thus it now has a bend. The cost of the original bridge was approximately £9000.
In 1955, the second traffic lane was abandoned...but a space was left for passing vehicles. Over the years it has been retained at a cost to the community and you can still pass over the bridge. The speed limit is restricted to 20k's, there is a load limit and if you factor in your swimming ability just in case... you are good to go.
It's one of those special hidden places that intrigue you and it's definitely worth visiting.

An old timber bridge. Worth a stop and look if passing through. Still in use today for vehicles less than 3 tonne. Picturesque area.

Interesting heritage bridge you can drive across, single lane. Longest wooden bridge in Victoria. One for the history enthusiast.

Staying at Mitchelton winery and had a drive around the country side. This amazing old bridge is well worth a look. Looks rickety and rotten , very long but worth a look.

Rattling old wooden single lane bridge constructed long ago. Well worth a drive across. There is a passing spot about half way across if there is someone coming towards you. The timbers rattle with the motion of the car. Take the time to walk some of the bridge, to get a close up view of its construction and also a real feel for its ambience.

This was our 5th time staying at Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park. We didn't actually go on the bridge. We took a cruise.
The Goulburn Explorer sunset cruise was fabulous. Chris and Jill are kind, friendly and very tolerant of our children and us adults too!
Thank you so much for having us, we will tell all our friends and be back again soon.

Driving over the bridge was an experience. It’s not to far out of town which is lovely. Once over the Bridge there is a spot to pull over, take photos and read about the history. Such a great place to see.
