This was about a 5 mile hike for us. It was 1.5 miles to get to the bridge to sycamore falls and then 1.5 miles to get to sycamore falls and back to the trail. 2 miles to keep going through the rest of the loop. We took 5.5 hours and stopped to take all sorts of pictures and enjoy the place. After this we were pooped for the day, the ground was pretty uneven at times and some elevation changes. The bridge to sycamore falls was just a fallen tree when we got there since the original bridge was out. This was the most treacherous part of our hike with more of a climb to get from the loop to this bridge. One of the best trails with lots of waterfalls. All of it was absolutely worth it.

Hard to find. Scare parking. Beautiful and peaceful scenery. Not terribly far from the interstate or restaurants.

Ready for a slightly strenuous 2 mile hike? Try this one! Amazing views, plus several spots to sit and contemplate nature. It's almost all shaded, so that's nice. Tons of cool plant life, too. Great hike! If you are wondering about littles: my 7 year old did this, and while he was tired, he was fine.

Barbara and I have hiked all over eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia and some place several times. We were looking for something new. We had glanced at South Cumberland State Park but never to any depth. So as a whim we set out to find Grundy Forest and the Fiery Grizzard Trailhead. It took a few wrong turns but we arrived and set out on the Grundy Forest Loop Trail which is a little over 2 miles. As we got down the trail and spoke with some other hikers we learned of Sycamore Falls and the side trip trail to get there. All along the Grundy trail there is water and small falls to see. There are masses of evergreens and very old and large trees. One was so wide that I stood behind it and all that could be seen on either side from the front was my hands. I'm 6'3" with a arm spread over 6' fingertip to fingertip. It was massive. The side trip to Sycamore Falls was, at times, step and rocky but worth the side trip. On the return we got back on the Grundy Loop and finished the full loop with more water and falls. Had there been a recent rain it would have been even more wonderful. The Fiery Grizzard Trail that starts in the same place is 13+ miles one way. That will be for another day. The trail was busy but wonderful and so worth the trip.

My wife and I hiked the Grundy Day Loop with the spur to Sycamore Falls. We greatly enjoyed the day. The total hike was about 4 1/2 miles and most was along the pleasant Fiery Gizzard creek, with many small waterfalls along the route. Beautiful views of the creek, stones, and bluffs made it a great day.

Everywhere you look is something! A waterfall, a cascade, a deep pool, a river view that rivals the Smokies. Hiked about 5.5 miles here, doing the day loop plus some of the Gizzard. Take the spur to Sycamore Falls! You hear the water as soon as you park your car. Trails are very clearly marked and maintained. Watch for roots and rocks.the trail does become boulder scramble at times. This place blew my mind and is my #1 favorite place to hike. No frills, except a bathroom at the trailhead. Definitely a hiking boot place, not a Chaco or Nike place.

This is the ultimate in serenity; so beautiful and peaceful. And yet easy to find & not at all far off the beaten path.
There are plenty of things to do and see here and it’s all pretty much at your own pace. Immersing yourself in nature is quite possible here.

Is there overnight parking at the Grundy forest day loop area?

Yes! Make sure to call ahead and speak to one of the Rangers first tho. The overnight parking comes with the typical warnings!
