‪I like that dogs are allowed. It was hot but they had water as you entered in case you forgot. It did rain but trails were still hikeable after and it helped cool off‬

‪Some ups and downs with this location. Overall my sister and I had a great time. Our original campsite was taken when we arrived, but the ranger helped find us another location. It was more away from people and that was the perk. However, we had to unpack and carry out stuff through a meadow to our site. Which if it wasn’t for those damn thorn bushel things would not mattered. Our new location was right by the river (and a trail ) and we got to see some cute armadillos. That was the highlight of the trip, those cute armadillos.‬

‪This park is about 4-5 hours from Houston and about 2-3 hours from Dallas. It is a fantastic place to visit. Once off road, you drive on a pasture with cows and deer on the road, so drive carefully. Camping grounds are mostly next to the river, they are large and easy to stake the tent. The only reason I gave a 3,; where our campground was we had to take everything down about 20-30 steps down and again back up when is time to leave. There was a bathroom close to us, it is a compost bathroom without water to wash. Water is outside about 50 feet away. No shower.
The park has many trails some only hiking and some biking. I recommend Gorman trail waterfall. It is about 3-4 miles round trip with trails connected to make it longer. It is moderately difficult but our kids didn’t have a problem hiking it. Finally, at night put all your food and trash away. The have raccoons, hogs and armadillos that are relentless. Always watch your food.‬

‪I’m not very familiar with Texas but decided to venture out alone while my husband is here for work. I hiked a couple of hours in this park today and found it very remote and peaceful. The Colorado river was slow and brown, not very pretty but I discovered the lovely springs and swimming holes on the Spicewood Springs trail. Easy flat hike alongside the river. Only downside was my time at the beautiful swimming hole was ruined by a family with a very loud aggressive dog off leash. It continued to growl and bark and jump at me so I was forced to leave before the situation deteriorated and someone was injured.
If your dog is aggressive and hates people DONT take it to a public place ! What is wrong with people? So selfish and rude and dangerous.‬

‪My husband and I drove 4 hours just to see Gorman Falls in Colorado Bend State Park, and were turned away because we didn't have a reservation. 4 hour drive! We had no idea you had to have a reservation. We explained that we didn't want to stay in the park, we just wanted to park, look at the falls, take a few pictures, and leave. Nope. Turned away. The park ranger told us to make online reservations for much later in the day. How can you make online reservations when there is no cell service?? We thought it was pretty crappy. We left and drove 4 hours back home. TERRIBLE!!‬

We will do it again when it’s cooler‬

‪Moderate trails lead to overlook of limestone cliffs and canyons, spring-fed creeks, and swimming holes. Colorado River is park boundary. Bring sturdy shoes with good soles and plenty of water during hikes, as trails can be quite rocky. We saw many armadillos.‬

‪We arrived at this park around 6 AM for a day of hiking. Once you cross into the park there is absolutely no cell phone reception so keep that in mind for safety on the trails. Have an alternate means of communication if planning to hike alone especially. We hiked early to Gorman falls before the trail got busy and it was breathtaking. We then hiked down to the natural spring for a swim and it was very pleasant. Did not see any park staff while there but the entire park was clean and well kept. What tent camping sites I saw I was not impressed with. Most had little to zero shade and no privacy from the road. There was a fantastic spot to put in our kayaks and so we went for a short paddle that afternoon once it got too hot to hike. ‬

‪My friend and I have started to visit state parks as a way of dealing with this pandemic. Nature is so healing and it did not disappoint at Colorado Bend. We only had time to hike to the Gorman Falls, but it was amazing. The trail is very rocky and there is some shade. It is what you would expect to see in the Texas Hill Country. What you do no expect to see it the incredible waterfall with green mosses and lush ferns that look like something from Lord of the Rings. It is very slippery and very steep as you near the falls.‬

‪My boyfriend and I camped here for 3 nights this past week. It was our first "real" camping and hiking trip after doing a couple of test runs near Houston. We camped at drive'in site #41 and hiked the Gorman Falls, Cedar Chopper Loop, Tie Slide, Tinaja, and Old Gorman Road trails.

Pros:

- Beautiful scenery. For a 4 hour drive from Houston, this park felt like it was a world away. Huge rolling hills and wildlife galore. We shared our campsite with several armadillo and deer families.

- Perfect stargazing. You can actually see the Milky Way at night!

- The park has NO phone service, but the gift shop has public wifi.

- Hiking trails were gorgeous, and take heed of the map warnings. If a trail is marked as "Challenging" or "Very Challenging"...it is! Decent hiking boots are required, and some of the trails are not safe for small children, the elderly, or pets. While these trails lead and pass by extremely scenic vistas, some of them have VERY steep drop offs. Sometimes you are literally hiking along a canyon edge, so leave the kiddies and pups if the trail has over a Moderate rating! The trails are well-kept in the sense that any trees growing directly in the trail were cute, but the trails are vaguely marked and it is easy to get lost if you aren't paying attention.

Cons:

- There is no running water at the park. This means, no showers and no flushing toilets. There are two composting restrooms (basically outhouses), one for the North campsite and one for the site. They aren't the cleanest or best smelling, but they got the job done. There is an outdoor "wash off" shower, but no private indoor showers. We were prepared for this and brought a pop-up privacy tent to take washoffs in, but it seemed like some people were taken by surprise.

- The gift shop sells firewood and ice, but don't take cards. Cash or check only. There is a general store right outside the park that sells ice and firewood, and takes cards. Or, you can drive to San Saba or Lampasas to find an ATM like we did.

We enjoyed our trip here, and definitely plan to return to do the Dogleg Canyon, Springwood Canyon, and Springwood Springs trails. I highly recommend Colorado Bend State Park for anyone looking for a getaway from the city within a 4 hour drive.‬
