An old town that has kept dozens of old homes intact along with an old theater and other buildings that may not appeal to everyone but it's a lot of history and a nice walk to do on a pretty day. There's even a Sears house, ordered from and delivered by Sears Roebuck, assembled and still standing after 100 years! It's self-paced and free!

We were there staying at an Airbnb and had some time to walk around a bit. Really clean little town, very friendly people. We just happened to be there at the peek of the poppy's blooming so it was so beautiful. According to the towns people Castorville is the Poppy Capitol of Texas!

Castroville is rich in it's history and a walking tour is a great way to step back in time. A great place to go is the Castroville historical center which is not found on Google Maps. When you come in from San Antonio turn right on Firorella street. It will be shortly after you cross the Medina River Bridge on HWY 90. Go 2 1/2 blocks to Paris street and turn right. A half a block on the left side is the center with lots of Castroville history and it also is a replica of houses from the 1800's. Entrance is in the back.

You can walk the tour, or drive it. They have about 50 historic buildings in the downtown area and a number of historic markers explaining the history of Castroville.
Interesting if you love history.
Don't miss the 1st County Courthouse of Medina County (now City Hall).
Allow at least an hour if you are driving, more if you walk. It is a great cool Fall day activity.

Interesting, but only if you like old houses. Cool to see SO MANY houses that are over 100 years old and the architecture is great.

I stopped by the visitor's center and got a booklet of the town that had maps and a list with pictures of all the historical places to see in the town. I drove it due to the heat but it was nice to see and know the history behind such unique buildings

We were doing the driving tour while in Castroville and came upon this old theater.
It is now an antique store, with multiple "booth" areas.
It was nice to walk through. Still has the slope where the chairs were. The stage, and balcony.
It was easy to imagine what it would have been like in the old days.

Yesterday the Docents from the Texas Museum of Handmade Furniture paid a visit to Castroville. What a great experience we had. Our home in New Braunfels was settled by German emigrants, Castroville was settled by the emigrants from the Alsace area of France. We toured some of the most beautiful homes and churches, after a tour at their museum. The Docents were in Regional Dress and were eager to trade phrases with our German speaking Docents. We walk from showplace to showplace, each as beautiful as the last. We found it to be well worth the trip and we came away with ever more knowledge of the history of our area of Texas.

We drove the walking tour since the temperature was near 100 degrees at the time. However that didn't stop us from enjoying seeing all of the interesting homes and reading about them in the brochure from the Chamber of Commerce. They are so unique!
