VERY good museum! Show/tell everything you ever wanted to know about offshore drilling! And it all takes place on an actual former drilling rig! Plan on at least between 1-2 hours. Well worth your time.

I learned a lot from this museum. The displays were detailed and informative. That platform was fascinating to explore. We weren’t offered an audio tour option, initially, but saw signs for it and went back to the desk to ask. The audio tour is an extra $5/person, but for me greatly enhanced the experience.

Lots of technical details on offshore drilling. It was a little technical. Being out on the platform was very interesting.

It was ok. Lots of models showing the different types of drilling and support rigs. More suited to the engineer mentality. Wife was very bored. I loved it, ergo the three bubbles.

I had my two children and my two nephews. They ranged in ages from 8-13. All the kids had a great time and we learned a lot. They got to see many new things from a different perspective. Fun and educational which was exactly what I was looking for

This is a well done museum about the offshore oil industry. Models of various boats, videos about processes, displays of living quarters, examples of some of the machinery used, etc. Very clean and well put together museum. Honestly, though, I kinda wanted to explore an actual rig, going down into the bowels of the ship, climbing the ladders, etc. That’s more what I expected when planning to visit here, so I was a little disappointed. But, still it’s a great museum and I learned a lot of things I had no clue about. The two docents we interacted with were both very friendly and helpful. Pristinely clean bathrooms.

Fantastic history of drilling. Getting to walk through the rig and see all of the exhibits was very interesting. Gives you a great understanding of the impressive nature of these technical wonders of engineering

I have lived in the Houston area all of my life and hadn't known a lot about the petrochemical business. We thought it was about time to learn more about it so visited this museum. It is loaded with lots of models of drilling equipment, rigs, and anything else drilling related on three floors. It was quite overwhelming for one who didn't know a thing about the subject. To be honest it was boring. Great setup but boring. We did enjoy going outside on the rig and seeing an escape pod, hyperbaric chamber and other items. I'm sorry but we just found the whole subject uninteresting.

This was a great idea for a museum. Gift shop and entrance located on land at Pier 19. Museum was in the Port of Galveston down a short covered walkway.
The Ocean Star was a former drilling platform until 1984 and operated in the Gulf of Mexico.
Two levels of outdoor access gave up close viewing of drilling, safety and control equipment.
Inside there were three levels to explore. Main floor included a theater with end endless loop about offshore exploration and drilling. Lots of self explanatory displays (some hands on) with types of rigs, drilling and extraction tools and methods, Hall of Fame for industry pioneers, safety as well as living conditions.
Informative and unique you could spend 1-2 hours here absorbing everything.

As we were downtown, we decided to go here. It was very impressive. An oil rig encompasses very much engineering.

Yes it is as described in the other answer. It’s a long ramp. Plenty of space but doubt your be able to get the outside deck.

How much is admission fee?

We are Seniors and paid $6.00 each for admission. However, we parked at Pier 21 and were charged $12 for parking having been there from 10AM to 4:15PM which actually comes out to be about $2 an hour. We did Ocean Star, walked the historic district downtown (The Strand) and had a nice lunch at Olympia Grill which we highly recommend.

Is there parking available?
As previously mentioned, there is a variety of paid parking in the area, but the museum does not own or control any of the parking options.
I'm conducting a training course in June at TAMUG about the Merchant Marine and feel this rig would be a good addition to our course. In building our budget, I need to know expenses. We will have 20 students and 4 instructors.
We have many groups from TX A&M Galveston visit throughout the year. This site will not allow links, but from our website you will find email address for our Programs Manager. Contact us for specific booking questions and information.
Do you have group rates for students?
Yes we do. While the museum is a self guided facility, k-12 student groups booked in advance receive a discounted rate and museum staff facilitates a guided tour.

Roughly about how long will it take to explore the museum?
We suggest allowing at least an hour to an hour and half to walk through exhibit areas and view a 15 minute introductory video. If you choose to do the audio guided tour, it runs 2.25 hours if you listen to each track.
