Una muy buena experiencia y una visita obligada en Houston. Los edificios son impresionantes y contienen maravillosas obras de arte. Absolutamente recomendable.

The visit to MFAH was thoroughly enjoyable. The architecture of the museum is a pleasure in and of itself - a very well thought out and enjoyable space. The collection is strong, although stronger in some areas than in others. For instance, the selection of European renaissance and baroque art includes many high-quality works, but few really important ones. No Raphael or Rembrandt, and only a couple of paintings by Botticelli and Van Dyck. The collection does get progressively stronger, though, especially from post-impressionism onward. The early 20th century is particularly good, with many of the greats included - Modigliani, Picasso, Kirchner, Soutine, Matisse, Leger. Also strong is collection of abstract expressionism, and I was very pleased to learn about some excellent Latin American abstract art that I was completely unaware of (Milton Dacosta, Aluísio Carvão).

I live in Houston, so I'm always surprised to find awesome places around here. This museum was like unfolding a fun spot. I kept being surprised by the extent of their collection. I'm not a connoisseur of fine art, but I enjoy it. That being said, HMFA isn't as great as the Louvre, but it's worth the price, for sure.

The museum has nice permanent exhibits with great “visiting” exhibits. A season pass pays for itself quickly after only a couple of visits.

We've been MFAH museum members for years and always enjoy their rotating exhibits. For this visit we saw Incomparable Impressionism and the M.C. Escher exhibit. Both were excellent. Enjoyed seeing all the Monet and Renoir paintings full of beautiful gardens, rosy-cheeked children, people dancing, and just enjoying life in general. M.C. Escher's art by contrast was mathematical, measured, brooding, and full of symmetry. Nice to see such variety. Museum signage could be improved a little bit. Adding temporary signs directing guests toward the exhibits would be really helpful. The museum has grown so much and is now spread across three large buildings. Parking is available for a fee in the MFAH parking garage. There's also a good indoor/outdoor cafe where you can enjoy lunch and a pretty sculpture garden across from the museum. This is a wonderful place to spend the day.

Horrible directions once inside museum. Very few directions to find museum entrance. Asked a question several times and got a blank stare, I do not know, or person barely spoke English. Quality of art work is world class!
Surely the museum can do much better than what we endured.

So incredibly disappointed in this latest trip to the museum. My mother took me and my kids to the Escher exhibit today. While the exhibit itself was quite amazing, the museum staff completely destroyed the experience for us. First, the "security" folks were following my kids (13 & 14) around like they were art thieves while ignoring the old women putting their hands all over the pictures. They also ignored the man listening to his phone at full volume. My kids are very well behaved and were there to enjoy the exhibit.
Second, there was an exhibit that was being renovated by the Escher exhibit. They had a cherry picker going up into the ceiling. While moving it emitted this obnoxiously loud squeal which went on for at least 30 mins. People were covering their ears and several folks, my mother included, complained. We were given a refund for the exhibit but as we passed the "construction" my mother mentioned it would be nice if this was done after hours. The staff there rolled their eyes and laughed at her. Great customer service. So glad I didn't renew my membership. I doubt we'll be going back any time soon.

Excellent way to spend a few hours .. Not all the works shown were to my liking but worth the admission for the Monet alone .
Staff were super helpful.. As a visitor to the City it’s a must do . Enjoy.

Great time enjoying the Impressionist exhibition currently available, but the MC Escher exhibition is absolutely fantastic. 400 original works, get your tickets and enjoy!

Less than 2 miles towards downtown (other side of I-69) is an area referred to as “Lower Montrose”, near the University of Saint Thomas and Rothko Chapel. You will find lots of vintage stores, artsy stores and unusual restaurants. This is a unique area unlike what’s found in most Texas cities.

My husband is a patient at MD Anderson. Does the museum have wheelchairs available or must we bring our own? Also, generally is the museum easily accessible? Are private tours available for people with some walking limitations? TIA

I would say that the museum in general is very accessible. I don’t know if they have wheelchairs, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I’m not sure how close you’ll be able to park, though ..

If I buy a ticket to get into the Kusama exhibit ($18) do I also need to buy a general admission ticket ($15)?

Hi Jen,
Museum general admission is included with your "Kusama: At the End of the Universe" ticket, as well as admission to the beautiful exhibition "High Society: The Portraits of Franz X. Winterhalter." We hope you also take a minute to check out the Kusama FAQs page on our website, so you can know what to expect from your experience.
We hope you enjoy your visit!

Hi Vicki-jae,
The exhibition "Sculpted in Steel: Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1929-1940" is now closed, but our newest, interactive exhibition "Kusama: At the End of the Universe" opens this Sunday, June 12!
We also have the very beautiful exhibition "High Society: The Portraits of Franz X. Winterhalter" on view now, too. We hope you stop by this summer!
Sincerely,
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
