Our trip into the Maze was predicated on gassing up at Hite. Luckily, we had viewed a YouTube video from few years ago where the participants tried to gas up at Hite after exiting the Maze and the card reader was not working. It was not working in April 2021 either despite a voice greeting on their phone line that claimed their pumps were available after hours. In my opinion, since they knew their card reader was non-operational at the moment, they should have amended their voice greeting. So, the YouTube video alerted us to the possibility of a non-working pump and we gassed up in Hanksville just in case including our Jerry cans. The stop at Hite was to top off only. We made it out of the Maze okay on the gas we had. Do not rely on these jokers.

If you want to get away from it all, this is the place. No WiFi, or cell service. It’s as remote as you can get. The camping is super. Quiet, maintained sites. There are full hook-up, primitive, or improved sites to pick from. Clean bathrooms and showers. A great area to stargaze.
Katie is so helpful and a font of information. She let us use her phone line and even opened up the store when she was closed. I’ve never met someone that committed to their job. She even did night checks at our campsite, to us and the others camping there, to be sure everything was Ok.

This place was a God Send. Really, after towing my buddy 40 mile out of the Maze and hoping for something it was. Katie is the best campground host I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

If your gas tank shows below EMPTY. This place is a Godsend. The steep price is well worth it. Honest!

One of several reviews related to a 20 day Grand Circle tour.
So we stumble across a place called Hite. Hite? What's in Hite? So off we go, just to see what we can see. Well, there's an empty ranger station and a quiet little region that's off the beaten path. Which is to say, a very VERY quiet place. If you're looking to have a spot all to yourself, this would be it.
Be sure to bring everything you need, as there is literally no food, fuel or services to be found in this neck of the woods. (Actually, come to think of it, there are no woods to be found either).

If "Lake Powell" makes you cringe at the thought of houseboats and jet skis, not to worry. One of our maps showed a "ghost town", so after exploring Natural Bridges National Monument we headed north on UT 95 in search of Hite. UT 95 is a lonely road, but oh, so beautiful. Red cliffs along the way, hoodoos, small mesas. We crossed some deeply carved, splendid canyons, and finally came to the Hite bridge (referred to as the Dirty Devil Bridge on some maps), which has the distinction of being the first opportunity to cross the Colorado River north of the big recreation area at Page, many miles south. We crossed the bridge, just to do it, and then doubled back to the Hite Marina Road, which was actually numbered- UT 345, I think. It must be the shortest numbered highway in the U.S., at 3/4 mile.
We were hoping for an actual ghost town, but found instead a small scattering of housekeeping cottages for rent and a ranger station. No abandoned buildings with shadows whispering their stories, at least that we could find.
But we did find a very pretty spot on the Colorado River, looking across to some towering red rock with cliff swallows swirling over the river. The Colorado is lazy and not very wide here, maybe half a mile. A great place for us and the dogs to stretch our legs.
I guess this part of the Colorado is part of Glen Canyon, which is considered the upper reaches of Lake Powell, but it is nothing like the main recreation area. We did not see a boat on the river, a car on the road, another person. So in that sense it was a ghost town. Beautiful drive, beautiful spot to take a walk, beautiful spot to just watch the water go by.
Either bring all the provisions you may need, or plan on heading back down the road while it's still light.

HITE, UT is a remote ranger station located at the top of Lake Powell, adjacent to the confluence of the Colorado and Dirty Devil Rivers. One of my favorite places to be and I pass thru here every single year. The city of Blanding, Utah which is 70 miles east is the closest town. So if you go there. MAKE SURE YOU BRING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU NEED including FUEL.
There is a convenience store that was open and functional at some point, but I believe that because of the conditions of the lake the store may be close. If the store is open for any reason remember the prices for good and fuel are EXHORBITANT as there is nothing else around here.
While the bathroom and fish cleaning facilities are in place. They are currently locked due that the lake is completely dried out.
Now just because the marina is close and there is nothing there at this point or at least until the Lake fill up again, if ever. The place is BEAUTIFUL and QUIET. Last time I went, I had the place all to myself. Because there is no artificial light contamination, the view of the night sky is AMAZING. Make sure to take your camera with you.
Beware there are NO TREES whatsoever I'm going to repeat that, NO TREES and because of that there is NO SHADE, so unless you are in a self contained RV, your best bet is to arrive late in the afternoon and leave early in the morning. The place can get very, hot in the summer months, but because is very dry the evening and nights are very pleasant. Great place to visit and if traveling thru there, make the short detour, you won't regret it.

Hite is in the middle of nowhere, yet surrounded by beauty. The layers in the rock told the story of millions of years of geology.
It was the summer, so the heat is always an adversary; yet there is so much to see, even if just from your vehicle.
There are no many services along the road, so make sure to plan accordingly.

As described in my popular book "The Canyon Chronicles" -- "A few miles later, we came to a scenic overlook. We stopped and then walked out onto a magnificent promontory perch at the top of sheer-faced, thousand-feet-tall mountain of tan Windgate sandstone. Beneath us, the azure blue waters of Lake Powell sparkled in the sunlight like a mirage.
“That’s Good Hope Bay, formerly known as Glen Canyon,” I said. “And that’s the thriving metropolis of Hite, Utah across the Bay over there.”
I pointed toward some distant shiny specks on the far side of the canyon. “This is part of the Glen Canyon Recreation Area and the Park Service operates a marina for the boaters and fishermen. You’ve been to Page, right?”
“Sure, lots of times,” nodded Amy.
“Well, the dam backs the water all the way back to here, about 140-miles. It goes another twenty miles or so, but Hite is pretty much the end of the lake. And the boat launches over there are one of the few places where you can access the water.”
“Why would anyone ever decide to live here? There’s nothing. I don’t see a single tree.”
“The original town of Hite was covered by the lake. It’s like a little Atlantis down there somewhere. A dangerous desperado named Cass Hite founded the town. He had been one of Quantrill’s Raiders during the Civil War and was wanted by the law. He hid out here and did some prospecting. The Dirty Devil River and White Canyon converge at this spot and the Indians had crossed the Colorado River here for thousands of years. Ol’ Cass decided to make friends with the Indians and run a ferry service. He called it the Dandy Crossing because it was one of the easiest places to cross the big river. Once the lake filled up Glen Canyon, there was no more need for a ferry service, or the town. And as a nice touch of irony, the Park Service named the marina after the town that was swallowed by the lake.”
“Well, it’s stunningly beautiful,” said Amy, “But you couldn’t pay me to live here.”
“Yeah, but I bet you’d love to go swimming. And I know a place that will blow you away. Let’s go.”
We drove down several long switchbacks until we came to a spot where a large pinnacle of red sandstone seemed to block the road.
Over the years, several car commercials have featured sports cars zipping long this stunning stretch of road.
“Wow, that’s a big rock,” exclaimed Amy.
The highway made a sharp left hand turn and we pulled over just beyond the bend. We filled our day-packs with food, beer and other essentials before skiing down a talus slope that led to Heron-Bass Island where we spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and lounging around like big lizards. We saw the occasional motorboat, but no one disturbed us in our sandy rock sanctuary.
When it came time for us to put our clothes back on and return to the truck, we felt like we were being kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
The road wrapped around the edge of the lake where RV campers were lounging under awnings and frolicking in the water."

I don't believe so. At one time, maybe, but at this point there's very little water at this location.
