A well thought out memorial created a very moving experience from a little known and often suppressed horror from our history. 140 or so American families (men, women and children) passing through in a wagon train heading to California were attacked by a Mormon militia who through deceit and unimaginable evil shot and clubbed to death all but 17 children under 6. The dead were then stripped and left unburried for years while their few surviving children were given to Morman families. When we were there, very personal memorials had been left by descendants of both the victims (e.g. poems) and the perpetrators (asking for forgiveness). These and the well written displays about the facts and the character of the innocent victims moved me to tears. Only one of the 50 Mormon attackers was convicted and punished (some say to cover up the complicit role of the highest officials in the LDS church). My only criticism: no explanation was given as to "why" this happened. Then again, how does one explain human evil - especially when committed in God's name?

Learned a lot did not even realize anything about the event. Nice little hike takes you through the camps and the displays, Abouta 15 minute stop is perfect. Nice views of the valley.

For more than a century, the perpetrators of the Mountain Meadows Massacre have done everything they could to whitewash their disgraceful murder of hundreds of innocent men, women and children who had the misfortune of traveling the Santa Fe Trail through Utah as the Mormon settlers were preparing for war against the United States of America. The travelers' large herd of cattle and other assets, which they carried to start a new life in California, was obviously part of the motivation for the massacre. The perpetrators tried to blame it on the Paiutes. They made a scapegoat of Lee and hanged him. The whitewash continues here.

Take the time to see this memorial. The scenery there (and on the way to get there) is beautiful. But the story is haunting and a part of American history. You will likely be alone here as you take the time to listen and learn. When I was there, I could hear coyotes howling nearby. Sad but important history lesson here.

We happened to be in the area and saw this show up on the map, and felt it was worth the drive to check out. It really was. We learnt so much about the history of this town and the plight faced by the Baker Fancher wagon train. The memorial site is really well kept, is informative and evokes a peaceful atmosphere. We went as a couple but this would be really interesting for families.

I had never heard of this prior to planning our trip to Utah. There are several plaques with information about the massacre and its aftermath, and the small monument at the top of the sight is worth the short walk uphill. Very touching and well-done. This is a bit out-of-the-way, but for history buffs or ones interested in learning more about the area, it is well worth the trip. Some of the scenery from St. George to the site is quite nice.

I had heard some of the history of this tragic incident, but being here made it seem so much more real. From the overlook, you could imagine the terror felt by those under attack. It was easy to imagine the sounds of gunshots and screams and the treachery of the militia who lured the travelers into surrender, then murdered them.
We visited on a chilly day and had all four sites to ourselves.

I’m a local, and I’ve been to Mountain Meadow many times. I’ve had shared experiences here with other people, things we cannot explain. The history is cool, but if you really want to get the details, research the story outside of any church related memorials or readings.
