‪Great carriage rides and tubing hills. Hot chocolate building and fun winter activity for the entire family. Great things happen here year round.‬

‪We used to drive out there to take our young daughter for Baby Animal Days where she took great delight seeing the animals up close; then Covid hit, and we didn't visit for 3 years. The world has changed in many ways to include this place. We went on April 8th, 2022. Now it's way too many people for the size of the place. You wait in lines for EVERYTHING, sometimes upwards of 30 mins at the different entry points to the animal pens. Today it was just my daughter and myself. We decided to try the Bison Tour (btw, be prepared to be nickeled & dimed for things like having to pay $3 extra per person to see the Bison, $5 pp to climb the rock wall, etc.) We got our tickets and walked down the path. There looked to be 2 families at the bottom of the sloped sitting eating at the picnic tables at the bottom. We stopped by the picnic tables to look around. People looked at us furtively but nobody would acknowledge us so I said to my daughter I think we go to that man at the gate further. When we got there the man said you're not supposed to be here, you need to leave. I apologized and said we weren't sure where we were supposed to await the tractor. I asked him if it is where the people are at? He nodded. So we walked back to where more people had gathered. Apparently the families we saw told other people that was where you're supposed to wait. For whatever reason they chose not to inform us. The feeling you're not welcome pervaded so when we walked back to the picnic area my daughter & I kept our distance to sit down in the shade. Apparently that was where you loaded because as soon as we sat down, 2 of the men in those families immediately grabbed kids to walk over in our direction, and then made a point to sit together in front of my daughter and myself. It felt passive-aggressive but you try to overlook a lot of those kinds of things in life. Not worth the bother. So the tractor arrived and we loaded. Tractor driver said he would tell us a story about the bison but daughter & I never got to hear it. When the tractor driver climbed onto the bed he proceeded to talk to everybody else but my daughter and I. How do I know this? He had his back to the two people on the tractor bed who weren't white. The driver made a point to playfully interact and chat with every child there but my 9 year old. And then when we returned back to the loading area he invited those other children to sit up front on the tractor. The feeling was made very clear when the only thing differentiating a woman and her daughter from everybody else is the color of their skin that it doesn't take a genius to figure out why you're ignored. (Funny how they don't ignore your money.) It was obvious we are not welcome so we immediately left the whole place after the bison tour. And we will NEVER return to this racist location again. If you're white, talk to white people who visit because their experience will likely be better. My husband ironically is white, a disabled vet who spent the better part of his life defending freedom, even the freedom of those who choose to be racist to children. I was that dependent wife who got that phone call that my husband was injured in a combat zone from an IUD. I tell you what American West Heritage Center, my daughter deserves better than people in your staff treating her like she is invisible. Utah is much bigger than your small-minded bigotry. We will choose to spend our money elsewhere and hitherto deign to never darken your doorstop again.‬

‪We've gone to the Fall Harvest Festival two times now and have loved it both times. Our kids loved the pony rides and mini train ride. We also enjoyed the corn maze, random activities, and exploring the old pioneer era houses.‬

‪We visited the site through Harvest Host and were able to spend the night on the grounds. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The site was well maintained. The bison herd although small was interesting to watch. ‬

‪We showed up at 3 and they close at five but everything was already shutdown and closed up early since they had a slow day. They never warned us and we only became aware after we had paid. It was not worth 7$ each to see a couple of peacocks. The customer service was awful as well. When we tried to go back and ask for a refund after we realized everything was closed early the lady at the front desk said well that’s too bad.‬

‪I was here for a dinner and presentation so didn't get to enjoyed the complete facility. The part I did visit was very nice, especially for a family visit. Many of the activities are outdoors so good weather is helpful.‬

‪3.5/4 stars

We visited on a hot day in the summer where they were hosting a special event to celebrate the pioneers who came to settle the local valley. Nearly all the activities we did also happen during the summer, however, so just check the website. I was with my two five year old sons.

Things we were able to do that did not cost extra money:
*take a train ride (short but the kids liked it)
*take a pony ride (kids only)
*pan for gold (they LOVED this, you bring the "gold" to the front desk and they got to pick a prize!)
*milk a cow
*explore a turn of the century farm house, the root cellar, a prairie dugout and a pioneer cabin
*chuck a tomahawk at a stump
*play pioneer games
*do a pioneer craft (making a doll - my boys opted out but it was a choice :)
*eat a cookie that was made in a woodfire stove

They had a really great time and so did I. It's a big space and some of the buildings didn't really have anything to do in them but my kids were entertained for nearly two hours wandering around, which feels reasonable for the price you pay. There is a small museum and restrooms inside the main building but I didn't see any other restrooms that were obvious anywhere, so it is a bit of a trek to get back if you need it, depending on how far you've wandered.

Nice little gift shop and a few inexpensive treats if people need it.

We bought a pass so we could go back at the other seasons to do the other events - fall festival, baby animal days etc. I like their mission and while it's no Williamsburg, we had a nice time.‬

‪I stopped in on a Monday only to find out they are closed Mondays. I talked to a nice lady and told her I just wanted to take some photos of the barns. She was really nice and gave me a guest pass and allowed me to walk around the property to take my photos. I spent about half an hour and got some great photos. Couldn’t help but notice the animals, especially the beautiful peacocks. This would be a fun family outing. I will return another time.‬

‪When you step into the American West Heritage Center you feel like you are back in the 1860's.

This old farm is fun way to experience history and see how things have changed over the last century.

Bring the kids and enjoy all of the different trades and demonstrations.‬

‪Great time to spend with kids. Got to milk a cow. Ride PONIES. Pan for gold. Ride a train. Watch a wood working demo. See old houses/clothing etc. one suggestion. Put up better signage inside. Or atleast make a proper map scaled to size. Map they give is useless. ‬
