The highlight of the ski season, and we were late !
The calendar read Thursday, March 30th but 72 of 78 trails were open and people were blazing through the woods.
We broke trail on the 4 inches of fresh powder from the night before, and had spectacular views throughout the day. Our 10 runs netted us 16 miles and almost 16,000 feet of vertical spread over all 3 mountains.
The attendance was low, having only 30 cars in the parking lot at the base of Sterling. No lines inside or outside all day, and the staff was very friendly.
The lifts take 15 minutes to summit whether you are on the mile long double fixed chair to the top of Madonna, or the 1,000 foot vertical at Morse Mountain.
Our longest run was 3.2 miles.
I may go back one more time if Mother Nature doesn't wreak havoc with warmth and wetness.

This resort is touted as the number 1 family resort, but I honestly don’t know how. I have been here a few times as my co-worker has, he’s kids in the ski program and was never that impressed, but also not turned off from it at that time. Well last week not only turned me off from this place but left me disgusted with how it is run.
First thing was is the website to book lessons and tickets. It is such a pain to navigate to and find what you are looking forward. Then once you do, it takes you to another site that you must basically start all over with. I really know they need to invest some money into hiring someone to make an easier site to filter through.
Now this was just the start of my dissatisfaction with this resort. The main reason I am never bothering with this place ever again, is how the ski instructor treated my daughter, and the horrible lift attendants that do not speak English, and we’re not paying attention to the lifts.
We had booked two intermediate lessons for my daughter as she has skied prior to this trip, at Bolton Valley, and was able to ski down the different mid-mountain trails serviced by Snowflake and Mid-Mountain Lift. We just wanted her to be able to parallel ski and hockey stop, and I figured Smugglers would be the place as it says it in the description. However, your only options are a group lesson that are only for 7–15-year-olds, or an all-day camp for 5–6-year-olds. We figured since our daughter is turning 7 in June, she would be fine with the 7-year-olds. Sadly, this was not the case.
The instructor was rude, and said our daughter was too immature to do a group lesson and took her down to the carpet area. Then when I was going to check on her, I saw her over at the carpet area and the instructor asked if I was going to pick her up now. I’m like no, I paid for a two-hour lesson, and it has only been 30 minutes.
After the fiasco morning lesson she did her afternoon lesson, and I will say Justin was better and took her and a boy who was 7 on Mogul Mouse for that lesson. Amazingly she was not too immature for this lesson and went through the bear cave and yellow cat. I have found out from other people that this is the norm there, as some of the instructors are just there to ski and don’t want to bother with little kids who are not on a certain level of skiing.
The next day though was the nail in the coffin for this place. I took my daughter to the top of Mogul Mouse, and we went down Garden Path. This trail is a green with slight advance areas that you need to know how to slow down adequately. My daughter who had now been in multiple lessons was not able to do this trail and I had to catch her as she could not slow down since she was not taught there how to properly stop. She was able to slow down on the mellower runs over at Bolton and lower part of Morris Mountain. I was very displeased with the fact, since she spent a whole day taking lessons and had still not been taught how to hockey stop. Though it is worse, and therefore I cannot recommend Smugglers Notch for new skiers as it involves safety.
My daughter and I were riding up Mogul Mouse together, and we were getting off at mid mountain when she got off a little too early and fell into the lift pole. Thankfully it is wrapped in padding, but the lift attendant did not stop the lift to my surprise. I was a lift attendant at Loon, and you are taught if it even looks like someone is going to fall you either slow it down or stop it to help them off. If they do fall you stop it no matter what as it now becomes a huge safety issue. Though this is still not the worst of it yet.
Later on we decided to do mid-mountain on Morris’s lift for our last run, and when getting on my daughter’s ski became caught and popped off. Instead of stopping the lift and putting the ski back on for her, they gave it to the person behind us. This was not a huge problem I thought as they can slow down the lift at mid-station and I could help her off.
As we approached mid station the lift attendant was not even paying attention and I was yelling and waving my arms to get her attention. I then tried to get my wife to get her attention as she was in front of us to no avail. We got to the station and my daughter fell of course as she only has one ski and is very hard to ski on one ski as most people know. I yelled at the lift attendant to stop the lift and she had no idea till she saw my daughter had felled in the path. At this point I was done, and we skied to the base.
The other issue, which is more of like really? Is the fact you must pay $20 a day to use wi-fi there. Yes, they do have good cellular coverage, but my wife was working remotely in the morning, and we were both surprised that they would charge for internet usage. Most other resorts, that I have been to all over the world have never charged for Wi-Fi, so this made it hard for my wife to work as she had to tether off her phone. And this is also after we found out there really is no place on Morris Mountain for her to work as she was constantly being kicked out of areas by staff saying she could not be in an area after a different team member said she could.
I honestly don’t like to throw any ski resort under the bus, as the profit margin for most resorts is razor thin, especially at local resorts. However, Smuggler’s Notch is no longer an independent resort as it is owned now by Wyndham resorts. I think this is the reason the quality of staff and family atmosphere has gone down the tubes. Everyone I speak to who lives near here is saying the same thing about it and are like me going to other mountains to ski.
And just to illustrate the difference in quality of staff and friendliness of the resort. We went to Bolton Valley, where my daughter and I have season passes on Friday with my wife and had a great time for multiple reasons. The difference was night and day, and it even starts with their website which is way easier to navigate through.
I put my daughter in another group lesson at Bolton, and she had lucked out as it was just her and another girl who was 7 also, so it was like a semiprivate lesson. The instructors were fantastic as they really taught my daughter had to ski better and more confidently.
I say this as when we went to pick her up after the lesson, the instructors said she did great, and that they did Vista, Alta-Vista, Sherman’s Pass, Cobras, and the glades. I was like oh yeah right, not my daughter and the instructors were like no she really did and did great. I was stunned, as my daughter is a little timid towards stuff usually, and to do these trails I was blown away, as even I don’t like to do Alta-Vista and Cobras as they become icy and are steep. As a family we did these trails and glades as our daughter wanted to, and I was seeing it with my own eyes. My wife and I were just speechless and so proud of her. These instructors really helped her fall in love with skiing.
As for the lift attendants at Bolton, nothing but high praises for them. They slowed down the lift when they noticed my daughter and I having a hard time getting ready for mid-mountain. I quote he said, “I rather be safe than sorry.” I was very grateful for that. And at the top we felled, because my daughter’s ski was caught under my snowboard, and they stopped the lift to make sure we were okay. This is what I am used to and should be done at Smugglers since it is touted as a family resort.
So I cannot recommend Smugglers and would recommend looking at other resorts to ski at. Until Smugglers gets back to the way they used to be, avoid at all costs, as it’s no longer a family-oriented resort. They care more about making money than their guests.

We enjoyed our Club Wyndham property at Smugglers' Notch. The condo was large and well appointed. I especially liked the on-site Country Store which had our web-based order already in the condo whem we arrived.

Hiking in the summer around Smuggs offers great variety of scenic vistas that are different from those found in the winter.

DO NOT GO HERE with your young kids! Our daughter injured herself and the front desk and security mislead us to believe they had first line medical care onsite. for almost 2 hours of my daughter suffering in excruciating pain, the front desk and the security team lead by Tom McGrail told us they were sending someone with medical training to help her, the person they sent said "sorry, I don't have training for this". Then their "team" led us to believe they were coming onsite with medicine to treat her. After about 2 hours, they finally said "whoopsie, sorry we extended your daughter's suffering way longer, but there's nothing we can do. Call a doctor and find a pharmacist" Disgusting!

A great vacation experience. Our unit at The Owls was great - 2 bedrooms, fireplace, covered patio, large modern kitchen and dining/living area. We enjoyed some of the many available activities, especially the Farm -to-Table dinner and the Llama Trek. Our first time here but definitely will return.

Very cool place. Had a beautiful 3br unit. Lots of activities for all ages. Waterslides, pools, arcade, zip lines, beautiful hiking trails. Free shuttle that takes you around the resort. Food choices were a bit limited. And don’t let them rope you into going to a time share sales thing.

We had a good vacation on March break but on the last day our guests’ car who was staying in another unit was hit and damaged by a employee’s car while parked on the grounds. The guests had to spend the day resolving the issue and missed fun activities. Smugglers refused to pay the $1000 that our guest would be losing because of the accident. We advocated for our guests and Smugglers reluctantly paid the $1000. We are disappointed that the experience was so stressful for our guests and ourselves.
We will be returning to Smuggs ( as we love the fun times) but hope that this negative experience will not happen to other guests in the future if an accident on the grounds should happen.

I've been visiting Smuggs with my family and in-laws nearly every winter for the past 12 years and we just love it. We started visiting when my son was very young. Smuggs has great programs to teach kids how to ski and to keep them entertained while parents spend time on the mountain. We love the mountains and ski trails, low crowds on weekdays, inexpensive transportation, lodging, and lift tickets, and being able to stay onsite for our entire visit. There were always plenty of activities for very young nieces and nephews and our parents who didn't ski.
We've stayed in both their standard lodging and in timeshare lodging arranged by my father-in-law. Both accommodations are great. Dining options are OK. There are plenty of places for lunch, but we tend to buy groceries in the onsite store for dinners and breakfast.
We've visited a few other popular ski resorts in Colorado and Utah. We've experience both good and bad snow conditions everywhere we've visited. Smuggs does a good job of making snow and with grooming. The ungroomed trails can get icy between snowfalls and on windy days as you would expect. Years ago we always visited in late-January and most of the time we found great snow conditions. In recent years we've started visiting late season (March) during spring break. We've still found good coverage on the open trails but there are less trails open and of course things can get slushy on sunny days.
Relative to the western resorts, Smugg's is an extremely good value for airfare, airport transfer, gear rentals, lodging, lift tickets, and dining/groceries.
We only get to ski one or two times a year and the ski terrain is great for beginner to intermediate skiers and boarders. There are 3 mountains with a lot of green, blue, and easy black trails which are perfect for us. There's top to bottom skiing on all the mountains so you don't have to deal with complex multi-lift assents, getting stuck in a valley, or having to deal with narrow flat catwalks to get to a trail like many Western resorts. You just take a lift to the top, choose from a variety of paths down to the bottom where you get back on the lift.

We’re booked in The Owls at Smugglers Notch. Is the nearest hot tub in walking distance and is there a lift very close or a resort shuttle so we don’t have to drive and park?

The resort shuttle stops wherever you need to go. There are 2 hot tubs in the pool area. I'm not sure where the Owl section of the resort is. We stayed a short walk from the indoor pool. I can't remember the name though.
Hi, I'm looking for lodging for 5 adults and 2 children which is pet friendly. Can you recommend something that is in the Smugglers village area or nearby and within the range of the shuttle service?

Only book through resort. I booked through a private party and the accommodations were disgusting. Btw trip advisor would not publish my pictures of the place.

Question for family travellers - we love Smuggs, but wanted to try a different location for an August vacation. But I was hoping for a kids club/camp program of comparable quality. I think it's a tall order. Any suggestions? Hoping for something in the U.S., maybe on the Atlantic coast.

My husband and I are visiting in early July. Should we purchase the activity fee for $360 or is there enough access so we can be on our own?

Hi Justbarbarbara2017,
This is a great question to ask. We suggest to consider what you're looking to get out of the trip. The SmuggsPass activity pass you are referring to will get you access to a myriad of activities and amenities we'll touch upon at the end of this response, each day you're staying on the resort. If those interest you, but you only plan on spending time on the resort for a day or two while you are here, we suggest the Daycation Ticket, which gets you the same access on a day-by-day basis, and would be the most economical option. The cost of the Daycation ticket is $70/day per adult. That way, you can truly customize your trip!
Both passes get you not only access to all 8 of our pools and waterslides, but also both freshwater swimming reservoirs, guided hikes and wikes, wellness activities, daily use of Mini Golf and Disc Golf courses, Mountain Bike Skills Park access, adult activities like organized sand volleyball games, aqua aerobics, access to our brand NEW FunZone 2.0 Ozone, and discounts on children's programs, child care, and our 3 Mountain Outfitters.
Feel free to call our reservations staff at (800) 419-4615 with further questions!
