‪ I visited this place when Mr. Cropper was there. It was a happy accident that I found my way there. He gave me an impromptu tour when I stopped to look at the house. It was a unique experience to see it before any renovations. I will never forget him and his cat and the tour from top to bottom. His collections were amazing. After seeing the house he took me through the Visitor Center. Kittewan is a superb example of the early James River plantations.

How wonderful you were able to do that! Come visit again soon and see how the Archaeology Society of Va is honoring his legacy. We’ll treat you like family!

‪I came here on a weekend when they were supposed to be open, but they were not open. None of the people wanted to show up that day. I just walked around. Nice place to see although it would have been nice to see the inside.‬

‪It is a stunning property, but the house is a unusal. I really did enjoy seeing the process of excavations. The woman who gave the tour was very knowledgeable and nice.‬

‪This plantation was closed – we just rode thru to take a look. It was built in the 18th Century and sits on the James River. The home and the surrounding 720 acres are overseen by the Archeological Society of Virginia. Tours are offered on the second Saturday of every month (March through December) or by appointment.‬

‪Kittiewan is an ordinary Colonial period house that was a typical style at the time it was built around 1770. Inside, it is very plain with nothing elaborate except for the unusual and surprising Georgian interior paneling in the two rooms at the front of the house. Very nice.

No one lives in the house, and the upper floor as well as the basement is open for viewing. The house holds the collections of William Cropper, who collected enormous amounts of things. The basement is full of his collections, but nothing is labeled or dated. The furnishings in the house aren't from the same period as the house, although some of the things are described and dated, particularly the ladies dresses.

None of the outbuildings still exist, but markers on the grounds tell where they were. There is not much of a view down to the river.

This plantation can be described as a work in progress. It is currently owned by the ASV who are researching and discovering the hidden past of this plantation. I would be interested to see it again in 5 years to see how it has progressed.

Currently, the house is open on the 2nd Sat. of the month. Go to the visitor's center across the street to buy your tickets ($7.00) and start your tour.‬

‪This outwardly-appearing simple farmhouse, built by the surgeon general to the Continental Army in c.1770, has a wonderful surprise inside - beautiful carved paneling in two rooms that rival that of Richmond's Wilton and Charleston's Drayton Hall. Headquarters of the Archeological Society of Virginia, the home is open only on the second Saturday of every month (closed some winter months). It is an excellent example of how an historic property has changed over time. It also houses the Americana collection of William Cropper, who owned the house with his wife (who moved into the home at age 4 and remained there for her lifetime) for over 50 years and collected everything from butter churns to salesmen's samples to farm and household implements to fine china and glassware to whatever - you name it, he collected it! What a find this was!‬
