‪Interesting History!‬

‪We were visiting Williamsburg and decided to go and see some nearby plantations. Evelynton Plantation is on Route 5, a scenic byway which runs between Richmond and Williamsburg. We were only able to view it from the gate. Evelynton was originally part of William Byrd's Westover Plantation. He named the property for his daughter, Evelyn; this site has been home to the Ruffin family since 1847. This is not the original house – that house burned down. The current house was designed by W. Duncan Lee in 1937. Today, the 2,500-acre farm is still family owned and operated. The house and grounds are not open to the public at this time.‬

‪Unfortunately...this review does not allow me to put in the date I actually last visited...but I had my wedding there in June 2002. It is no longer open to the public...and I thought that was important for people to know...if planning on visiting.

It was one of the few plantations that actually allowed you to have your wedding guests INSIDE the house (important on a warm June day)! the period furnishings were wonderful. It was as beautiful on the outside as it was in the inside. Gardens were lovely. Magnificent back porch with gorgeous curved double stairwell/fountain. There was a boat dock to the James River. So sad it's no longer open to the public, as I had booked my wedding there...with full intentions of returning on my 10 year anniversary (this year)...with our children...so they could see where mommy & daddy had their wedding reception. Oh well. Thank goodness for photographs!‬
