‪I spent a day going to plantations in the Charles City area and was impressed by the grounds. There are several buildings and gardens on the property. Free parking with an honor system to put $3 in the box to look around. It is worth the drive.‬

‪Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation in Charles City County near Holdcroft, Virginia, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The scale and character of the collection of domestic architecture at this site recalls the vernacular architectural traditions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries along the James River. These frame structures of the common planters were in sharp contrast to the elaborate brick residences of the wealthiest families along the James River between Richmond and Williamsburg. Piney Grove is located on the high ridge of land to the north of the river, in an area of smaller plantations with more modest homes. In fact, the original portion of the Piney Grove home was constructed as a log corn crib on the Southall plantation before 1790. It survives as a rare and well-preserved example of early log architecture in Tidewater Virginia. Original buildings include a smokehouse, chicken house, a small pole shed and a large pole shed for farm equipment. Old photographs document a large barn, small barn and dairy no longer standing. Today, Piney Grove is furnished with a collection of antiques and artifacts that chronicle the history of the property. The grounds also include a unique collection of folk architecture moved to Piney Grove to be spared from demolition at their original sites, including buildings constructed in 1835 and 1857. The complex is open daily and guided tours of the house are available daily by appointment. Bed and breakfast lodging also is available on the property.‬

‪We stayed here for a weekend away in late October. We had a late check in on Friday, which we were given detailed instructions on how to do by Brian. The room was nice, the bed comfortable, and the decor nicely done (Sallie Smith room). Breakfast on Saturday was ready and waiting in the main hiuse. We had fresh fruit, cheesy egg bake, and city ham. Delish! Mrs. Shirley was a delight. We enjoyed most of the morning reading about the plantations in the area and exploring the grounds, including the hiking trail. We got back again late on Saturday, had a lovely breakfast on Sunday of stuffed french toast topped with apples and a side of ham. She even fixed hot chocolate since we do not drink coffee! The turn down service was attentive, the rooms were extremely well kept, we were provided fresh towels each day, owners welcoming. I would definitely recommend. ‬

‪A friend and I stayed at Piney Grove and I'll review that in the hotel portion. The owner's son also offers walking tours on weekends, and there's a self- guided one for other times. Honestly, it's not much. If you're driving by (which would be unusual - it's in the country), then go for it. There are several old buildings, most of which were saved from demolition and relocated to the site, and a short nature trail. The main house started as a corn crib! that grew. I was there in December so the gardens weren't at their best. It's worth a couple bucks and a little time, but not a special trip unless you're just looking for a filler activity.‬

‪We loved the house! Brian greeted us with hot toddies, and when we got back from dinner, Joan had a fire going in our woodstove. Breakfast was delicious!! The property was very cool, we will try to make it back there again for sure!‬
