‪Although there is a trail into the woods, the primary activity here seems to be fishing and boating. There is one concrete boat ramp. There is a fairly long walk out to the end of the fishing pier (lots of folks there the day we visited).‬

‪My husband and I parked here to ride the Virginia Capital Trail. We wanted to park at Berkeley, but knew there probably wouldn’t be a spot. It was convenient access to the trail. There was a primitive camping site at the upper level. There was actually a permanent pump with an assortment of biking tools near the camp ground. Wow. I’ve never seen that before. At the lower level of the park there was a pier for fishing and a boat ramp. There weren’t any other cyclists there, but a lot of people fishing. In addition, the historical signs were interesting. ‬

‪This is a 24-acre park on the north bank of the James River maintained by Charles City County Parks and Recreation. It's located at a Virginia Civil War Trails historic site. In June 1864, General Grant caught the Confederates unaware when he led his troops across the river here at "Wilcox's Landing" to advance on the City of Petersburg. This park is also a stop on the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, and the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail (Plantation Loop). Bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys and numerous other waterfowl frequent the park.

To reach the park, turn south off Route 5 onto Willcox Wharf Rd. A paved spur trail from the Virginia Capital Trail along Route 5 also provides bicycle access, but doesn't go quite all the way to the park (yet).

There are two sections or parking areas in the park. The upper section is a picnic area under large shady trees. The lower section is on the shore of the James River and has a boat ramp and fishing piers. The park has some dirt hiking trails and a short boardwalk for bird and wildlife watching. Restrooms are available at both the upper and lower sections. Educational exhibits explain the significance of the site. Picnic area, restrooms, parking and pier are wheelchair accessible; dirt trails may be too steep or have soft/uneven surfaces.

The park is usually open from sunrise to sunset so hours vary with the seasons. Posted hours for April to October were 6am to 8pm.‬
