‪This is actually a well-done small-town museum, but what could have been a nice visit was let down by the staff. When my husband and I entered, we found the man working the cash register engaged in a lengthy discussion with another set of customers that included the exchange of very conversative viewpoints and antiquated attitudes towards minorities in this country. I was appalled. Then, we found that, despite signs, there was no enforcement of the at-the-time state rules on wearing masks indoors. We had to skip an entire floor of the museum and cut our visit short because of an unmasked group of guests.‬

‪Mike was a generous and wonderful guide sharing information about the building and it's history. This was a memorable experience seeing the articles worn and used by soldiers and others in the Civil War. A great museum. Yes, it is haunted.‬

‪Very well done. Mike was very informative and fun to listen too. I would recommend this museum before visiting the other more known historical sites in the area.‬

‪My friend and I attempted a visit to The Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum on April 30, 2021. We were about 15 minutes early before the museum was scheduled to open at 10am, so we made our way to the Gordonsville Visitor Center. Upon entering we were greeted by a very polite gentleman behind the front desk. We informed him of our intention to soon thereafter visit the Medical Museum, and while pondering a hearty endorsement for the Museum, he kindly let us know that its opening might be delayed by a few minutes based on whomever was opening it on that particular day. While in possession of this helpful information, we drove over to the Museum parking lot, saw that the chain was up blocking the parking area, so we patiently waited in the driveway of the storage facility across from the Museum's South Main Street entrance.

We waited and waited. Finally, at 10:25am a vehicle stopped in the Museum's driveway, and a female exited the passenger side to drop the chain before returning to the vehicle which continued into the parking lot. Once parked, we assumed the employee/volunteer would rush to open the museum since it was already a good 30 minutes late in opening. We assumed incorrectly for the employee and gentleman continued to talk in the car and made no effort, nor were in any hurry in opening the museum. Since the chain was down, we drove into the Museum's parking lot, which prompted the aforementioned female and male driver to exit their vehicle and walk to the front of the museum to open it. My friend and I waited a few more minutes to give them time to open and made our way to the backdoor entrance with a growing uneasiness. We heard someone unlock the door, but they did not open it. The wind left the door ajar, so my friend and I, with reluctance and foreboding opened the door fully and walked inside the first room, and were "greeted" by the male with a curt nod in passing. The female uttered a curt, cold and indifferent "greeting" while traversing in front of us from one room to another without stopping, nor even looking at us. No apologies for the late opening, no smile in greeting - nothing. My friend and I looked at one another in disbelief and he quietly said, "Let's go, this place clearly doesn't need our (admission) money". At that point, we walked out, got in our car and drove away.

The late opening, the cold indifference left us both feeling quite sick to our stomach regarding the treatment and experience. We returned to the Visitor Center and relayed to the polite gentleman who we spoke to earlier, our utter dismay as to what had been endured despite our previous anticipation and best intentions.

Never have my friend or I entered a museum and departed moments later due to the initial treatment we received, and based on our ten and one-half years of visiting museums and historic sites together - as well as our combined approximate three decades of service as employees and/or volunteers at museums and/or historic sites - we quite frankly found the experience appalling. I only wish Mike was working that day (after reading the reviews) for it sounds like our experience would have been quite the opposite of what my friend and I experienced.

My friend did write a letter on May 2, 2021 to the President of Historic Gordonsville, Inc - administrator of the Museum, but acknowledgement of its receipt had not been received as of this posting of this review.

We do hope those overseeing the management of the Museum will bring attention to this matter to ensure that no subsequent visitors will be subjected to our level of discontent, it will be greatly appreciated.‬

‪Our family (we have 4 kids—ages 18, 16, 9, & 8) visited this great museum today. Mike was our tour host that was informative and clearly excited to share about the history of this interesting place. Our younger two enjoyed the scavenger hunt as well as learning the history with all of us. I definitely recommend this historic stop for everyone:-).‬

‪Mike was an awesome guide! Mike told us so much interesting information that we did not know. At the beginning of the tour he mentioned that there has been paranormal sightings. Well I dismissed this because I don’t really believe this stuff anyway. So we went through several rooms and then some other guests came in and Mike went to get them started. While he was away we separated from our group and was reading some of the information. I felt a shadow pass over my head and then the light went out. My husband said it was only a bulb going bad. So as we left the room I looked back and the light came back on. Take advantage of this tour! You won’t regret! Go alone if you dare but me I am only going with someone and I am staying with the group this time! Yikes!!‬
