Very interesting carriages from around the world. This carriage museum is located on the grounds of the Morven Park. The ticket for this museum is included with the Morven Park mansion tour. This was a very interesting self guided tour.

The Winmills were Virginia residents back in the days when many flocked to Warrenton for pleasure or refuge. One could take the train from Philadelphia or NYC directly to Warrenton for the weekend or for the season. Bobby and Viola Winmill were fixtures in driving, polo, fox hunting, showing, and racing for over 50 years, participating around the world in their equine endeavours. "Wiffle Tree" in Warrenton still stands, as do neighbours Ironwood and Clovelly, although you can't get tours through those houses or stables.
Mrs. Winmill had one of the most fabulous carriage collections in the country and was quite well known for her driving enthusiasm. By the late 1960s, she was determined to find a place to keep her precious collection where others could enjoy it. In 1970, the collection was transferred from her home at Wiffle Tree to the museum at Morven Park and opened to the public.
Ranging from single carts and wagons to elegant four in hand carriages, this collection is certainly worth a look. What the collection needs is some archival films to show the carriages in action back in the day to bring them to life. It can be a little dry if you're not familiar with the subject. If you really want to get a grip on the life of Mrs Winmill , read "Gone Away with the Winmills", written by her daughter, Virginia Winmill Livingston Armstrong. I you liked Downton Abbey, you'll enjoy this collection.

This carriage museum is a wonderful complement to historic Morven Park, and the Davis Mansion. The carriages will take you back in time in the best possible way. This museum is well worth the trip!

I enjoyed walking through the museum with its variety of carriages. I was disappointed that several of the carriages had no descriptions. It might be nice to have a little guide that differentiated the different styles. There type of carriage was usually mentioned, but I didn't know what differentiated a surrey from say a phaeton that I saw there.

This is a wonderful collection of coaches, carriages, and wagons! All that's missing is the horses, ponies, or goats that made these vehicles (including sleighs!) go... If you have kids with you, prep them first by letting them know who General Tom Thumb was... then show them the luxurious carriage that he used! One of the best parts of viewing this amazing collection of horse-drawn vehicles is learning the correct names for the many types of vehicles on display - a surrey, is a surrey, but there were many other types of recreational and travel vehicles in use in the 19th century, and many of them are here! It's best to take your time as you work your way through this collection so that the information offered can stick with you... A very nice and very special collection, indeed!

What a neat experience, especially about so many different kinds of carriages in one place! Just amazing collection and amazing history to read and see.

This is a very cute museum included in the Morven Park ticket price. It's small, but the carriage collection and historical information about how they were used is very interesting. I recommend it for sure!

I have to say that the coaches have all been wonderfully restored and save some of the wooden features, look brand new. However this takes away from seeing the coaches as something more. They look like they have been reproduced verses looking like historic pieces. It took away some of the fun....

The collection was impressive. I was a little disappointed at the signage. They told us what each piece was, but I would have liked more information about the actual uses for the carriages and maybe even a little back story about the individual pieces in the collection.

I had never before seen a carriage museum. This did not disappoint. The docent was very knowledgeable and friendly. An unusual window into life in the horse (and goat!) drawn carriage days.

If you are inquiring about the Vanishing Pools and searching for salamanders on the grounds of Morven Park they began on March 13-15 with information seminars and the following Saturdays were to be the searches themselves. I'd suggest contacting Morven Park to see if they would be ongoing in April when you arrive. Have fun and enjoy your stay.
