‪Probably better on warmer days‬

‪Visited with small kids as an alternative to playgrounds. There is a nice little walking trail that we all enjoyed (1 mile down and back). If the weather had been nicer it would be a lovely place to have a picnic. ‬

‪McCormick invented the first automated farm machinery. Interesting to see how his reaper worked. All its basic features are still used today.‬

‪No one there to ask questions about the site or to get any info. My husband and I were the only 2 people there!
Needs a nice restroom...and somewhere to get some water!‬

‪Quiet, beautiful setting for a picnic‬

‪We took a self-guided tour of the mill, exhibits, and surrounding property accompanied by a friendly little kitty guide. There is ample information about Cyrus McCormick and the invention of the reaper. You will learn the impact this invention had on farming. Don't miss the sewing machine in the corner and the story of it's inventor--it is not a Singer!

I would not recommend this site for small children. There are large jagged boulders, a steep-sided creek, and the grounds are very uneven. The mill house has many places where a careless child could be seriously injured. The site is not a good place for strollers. It is not handicap accessible.

Older children who love mechanical things and history should enjoy the exhibits. Down by the pond there are picnic tables under shade trees and bathrooms. Bring your own water and something to feed the ducks and geese. There is no fishing in the pond.‬

‪This is a nice example of an experiential museum. Original buildings are still in place and open to explore.

It's a beautiful place, very peaceful and rural. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch. Lots of places to spread a blanket.

‪Historic home of the mechanical reaper‬

‪Located just off I81 just north of Lexington, the farm of Cyrus McCormick is now owned by Virginia Tech. They have preserved here two old buildings from the 19th Century: a grist mill and a building once used as a blacksmith shop. Upstairs they have models of the original reaper as well as a real one in dilapidated condition.

These are in a park-like setting together with a pond.

There is no fee.‬

‪This a wonderful stop to get out and stretch. The views are beautiful and the information is very informative. The reaper changed the way agriculture was harvested and production steadily increased.‬

‪Where farming history was made‬
يوليو 2018
‪The Cyrus McCormick Farm and Workshop and Museum is located on the family farm of inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick known as Walnut Grove. He designed, built, tested, improved and patented the mechanical reaper, all within six weeks, which eventually led to the creation of the combine harvester that revolutionized the farming industry in the world. The farm, which originally covered 532 acres, is located less than five miles from the interchange of Raphine Road and I-81, on US Route 11, halfway between Lexington and Staunton. It currently is run as a museum and covers five acres of the original property. Today, eight of the nine original buildings are still standing, many of which have been renovated since the farm was created in 1822 by Robert McCormick. They include a grist mill, blacksmith shop, slave quarters, carriage house, manor house, smokehouse, schoolroom and a housekeeper's quarters. The other original structure, an ice house, was demolished in the 1960s. Each of the buildings played a specific role in the daily routing of the McCormick farm. After his father's death, Cyrus McCormick moved his base of operations to Chicago in 1847 because of the fertile prairie soil in the Midwest. The farm was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 1902, McCormick's company was merged with competitor Deering Harvester Company to form the giant International Harvester.‬
