We made a point to visit this farm but we couldn't find anything to see or experience. We wonder if it is more for school groups.

This home of Cyrus McCormick is like a park. It is open during daylight hours & there is no admission. The historic buildings have exhibits of his early life & the development of the reaper. The mill looks like it could still grind grain today. There are plenty of shade trees & a small pond. I'm glad I came here.

Visited with small kids as an alternative to playgrounds. There is a nice little walking trail that we all enjoyed (1 mile down and back). If the weather had been nicer it would be a lovely place to have a picnic.

McCormick invented the first automated farm machinery. Interesting to see how his reaper worked. All its basic features are still used today.

No one there to ask questions about the site or to get any info. My husband and I were the only 2 people there!
Needs a nice restroom...and somewhere to get some water!

We took a self-guided tour of the mill, exhibits, and surrounding property accompanied by a friendly little kitty guide. There is ample information about Cyrus McCormick and the invention of the reaper. You will learn the impact this invention had on farming. Don't miss the sewing machine in the corner and the story of it's inventor--it is not a Singer!
I would not recommend this site for small children. There are large jagged boulders, a steep-sided creek, and the grounds are very uneven. The mill house has many places where a careless child could be seriously injured. The site is not a good place for strollers. It is not handicap accessible.
Older children who love mechanical things and history should enjoy the exhibits. Down by the pond there are picnic tables under shade trees and bathrooms. Bring your own water and something to feed the ducks and geese. There is no fishing in the pond.

This is a nice example of an experiential museum. Original buildings are still in place and open to explore.
It's a beautiful place, very peaceful and rural. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch. Lots of places to spread a blanket.

Located just off I81 just north of Lexington, the farm of Cyrus McCormick is now owned by Virginia Tech. They have preserved here two old buildings from the 19th Century: a grist mill and a building once used as a blacksmith shop. Upstairs they have models of the original reaper as well as a real one in dilapidated condition.
These are in a park-like setting together with a pond.

This a wonderful stop to get out and stretch. The views are beautiful and the information is very informative. The reaper changed the way agriculture was harvested and production steadily increased.

Quiet place to walk my dogs and also see the buildings for the builder of the reaper. Close to the highway a nice place for picnics. Also has stumps of old chestnut trees and a nice pond with ducks

Is this attraction pet-friendly?

I'm not absolutely sure. I imagine pets, dogs, could be allowed as long as they are on a leash. There are ducks and geese in and around a nearby pond, plus rabbits and squirrels throughout the nature trail following the creek. A loose dog would/could create havoc. That's why I think IF pets are allowed, a leash would be required. When we visited we were literally the only ones there, so it was impossible to see what other visitors might do. To be safe, I recommend contacting the site directly either by phone or email.
