We took our dog for a long walk here. It was so nice! For one thin, it's shady, so even in the summer, it's not too hot! There are various "spurs" on the trail where you can see trestles, a stone tunnel (which is lit up inside), and there is even a coffee shop at one point where you can stop for a refreshment. The Awareness Garden is lovely and is right near the coffee shop. Great place to run or walk or bike!

Excellent Bike/Walking trails - Rails to Trails. Most of the trails are blacktopped for smooth biking/walking and are shaded from the hot sunny days. We biked over 9 miles in beautiful surroundings, including a low water crossing area that was concrete with water going under/through pipes with view of waterfall, an amazing tunnel that was a cool refreshing spot on a hot day, and multiple trails for you to choose from.

Staying in Lynchburg trout our bikes was no problem. We rented bikes from Bikes Unlimited and explored all the trails along Blackwater Creek and on Percival’s Island. Trails are in excellent shape and very scenic when you’re near the James River and along blackwater Creek.

This was a WONDERFUL place to walk on the trail. Easy walk and we are senior citizens. Parking close by to make it convenient!

Bike,/walking trail. Very woodsy. Many trees are labeled: sycamore. Eastern red bud, dogwood, etc. Wide enough trail for safety of walker and bicyclist.

Absolutely great for hiking AND biking! Park and ride---make your halfway mark near downtown restaurants----lock up your bike, have a great meal (Bootleggers, Pizza, CPO,etc.) The main trail has nice paving and riding through the tunnel is a cool treat (literally and figuratively)! Stopping at the dam is fun for children and to have a snack.

We have walked various portions of the trail. The trails are all well maintained and you meet people on the way, but not lots depending on time of day or weather.
We started by walking to Percival Island...but it is now closed until the end of March. Now we park by Amazement Place and walk either to the waterfalls or to the tunnel, and sometimes do the loop that circles both. We have walked to the Trolley station and started by parking at two other places.
It is nice to have a choice of scenery and length.
There are still portions left to walk...as we have not been on the Creekside trail yet
We also appreciate a port-a-potty in one center section!
Shady in the summer, which is helpful!
We are glad to have found these trails, starting in June of 2019.

We live close by this remarkable walking, biking & skateboarding trai,l so we can be into the woods in minutes! The paved trail winds through the inner forests of our city and is enjoyed by so many citizens--yet never seems at all crowded. I would say underpopulated, no matter how crowded the parking lot that we use: Langhorne Road at the Greek Orthodox Church. Yes, it does fill up, but you can see the lot and adjoining lane from Langhorne. There are several other entrances to the trail, eventually leading all the way down to the revitalized Downtown Lynchburg on the James River. (Which is worth a trip for walking, eating, and craft-beer-ing as well!)
One entrance, at Hollins Mill Dam, leads you either back up to Langhorne and beyond to the right, or to Downtown to the left--through an old narrow gauge train tunnel! Yes. Full disclosure: my father once owned the Hollins Mill--I remember going there with my brother when we were young; the mill was not in use anymore--but I remember the millstones laying about outside the huge mill. By the bye, My father placed mill stones at every home we lived in. Others went to Hollins College near Roanoke Virgnia.

We had the perfect fall day to enjoy walking this trail. We walked down this trail and then back a different way across a bridge. It was really cool to go through the old train tunnel! I would definitely recommend getting outside for a bit and checking out the scenery!

This is one of our favorite reasons for living/ working and playing in downtown Lynchburg. This trail starts next to the school bus at amazement square and runs all the way to the cancer awareness garden or you can take the Kemper st trail and come up by the city Amtrak train station and if that wasn’t enough you can just do a simple loop by taking the trail to hollins mill dam and returning on the point of honor trail. Lots of wildlife. A tunnel (who doesn’t like that???) and possibly a train on the bridge above!

Is the majority of the trail stroller friendly?

Yes, the entire path is paved... and are stroller friendly. The Percival Island section is very close to downtown and the Children’s Museum as well! The other end has a beautiful memorial reflection garden and trail begins at a restroom ( when it is opened after restrictions). The middle section includes a waterfall, picnic tables, ample parking, and a field. Just watch the hill if you walk away from downtown. Also there is a really cool ( temperature and appearance) lighted tunnel!

How long is bike trail?

Starting at the Langhorne Road entrance (at the Awareness Garden) and following the paved bike path to its end in Amherst, it is about 6.5 miles. You can add a jog that goes to the Kemper Street Train Station as well. If you google Blackwater Creek Bike Trail, Lynchburg, VA, you can pull up a very good map. Tripadvisor won't let me attach the link.
