My wife and I visited Mount Vernon as tourists from the UK - we were on a 10 day tour of historic Virginia and had previously visited both Jefferson's Monticello and Madison's Montpelier.
Mount Vernon shares many of the positives of Monticello and Montpelier:
- It's a beatiful property. Taking into account the fabulous location overlooking the Potomac, it's probably the most beatiful home of the three.
- The place is very well kept. Everything is in pristine order and well maintained, both inside the house and in the large gardens.
- The expert guides are very knowledgeable. There's not much they don't know about Mount Vernon and about Washington himself.
- A tour gives you a very comprehensive and rounded understanding of how Washington lived at Mount Vernon.
- Mount Vernon gets a lot of visitors. The tour was pretty well organised so that the large volume of people flowed through the rooms in reasonable time and didn't result in too much of a crush or too much noise.
On the issue of slavery, we felt that the tour and the guides soft-pedalled on this more than did their counterparts at Monticello and at Montpelier. They didn't whitewash the issue, but they didn't proactively delve into it much either.
For myself, I don't see a conflict between acknowledging and celebrating Washington's greatness and at the same time being appalled at his capacity to engage in the abomination of slave holding. Human beings often fail to live up to their own high ideals. That doesn't mean we should condemn someone's entire life because of one big flaw. But equally, we shouldn't gloss over it.
Washington acknowledged in his own lifetime that slavery was morally wrong, but failed to act on that insight. He gets credit for freeing his slaves in his will, but frankly he died a rich man and - in financial as opposed to moral terms - could comfortably afford to. Unlike Jefferson and Madison, who essentially died bankrupt and would merely add to the debts of their heirs by freeing their slaves (Jefferson freed just a handful, Madison none at all).
So let's celebrate Washington for his courage and principle in risking his life to free his fellow citizens from colonial rule by my own country. An act which has subsequently inspired millions around the world to struggle for their own freedom. But let's take his example as a prompt to look in the mirror and ask if we also have any ideals of our own that we are failing to live up to.

We spent 2-3 hours touring the home, the tombs, slave burial grounds, the gardens, stables, and other areas. It was a great educational experience for the kids and a good re-visit for the adults who have been here before.
A couple of helpful tips:
----------------------------------------
1. Give yourself about Half the Day or more...a few hours may not be enough.
2. Bring your own bottled water to stay hydrated.
3. Bring your cell phone or other Wifi Devices, as you can listen to the tour on them using the Free WIFI and website recordings provided via QR Code.
4.. Check out the wines at the Gift Shop ( Apple Wine sounded interesting )
We would return here - again.

The staffing levels and staffing quality over-all on the property were excellent. Which is good because (1) our full day there was not inexpensive, and (2) the staff is needed with so many large school tour groups going through the property each day. We felt attended to and cared for with the staffing levels — there was always someone nearby to help. The in-depth tour was great — but the self - tour of the mansion also found us with someone always nearby to provide insight. I am glad we did both. We enjoyed the Tour dedicated to the experiences of the Enslaved People at MV, as well as the boat tour. The memorial dedicated to the enslaved was tasteful and respectful. The museum blew us away! We were expecting the house — we were not expecting such a high-quality museum as well! The shop was very high-quality, and I really appreciate the wide range of price-points. Finally, the food, the prices and the staff at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant all exceeded our expectations!

Very nice visit. Staff are very knowledgeable. Site is well sign posted. Beautiful grounds and gardens. House is very well maintained. Excellent museum. Nice food court and shop. Recommend a early arrival as queues get very long in the afternoon. Good pair of walking shoes required as grounds are quite large.

Well worth it! I wish the people inside the Manson were as knowledgeable as the 2 gentlemen that took us on the grounds tours. They were both truly incredible in their knowledge of both the enslaved people and the National Treasure movie filmed on site. Get your tickets in advance. The private group tours sell out.

This was my first time in these parts and had to visit this location:
1. We purchased the tickets online, printed them and went to their Reception area to have them scanned and learn what we can visit
2. Although we arrived earlier than our timed entry, we were allowed to visit the house first and then the grounds, ending in the museum and shop
3. You are separated into groups when visiting the house with guides in each room telling you their 'lesson': some guides are nice, some just awful and rude, like the young skinny guy who could not wait to get rid of us
4. The house is not made of brick as you would think - I kept knocking even the outside walls and this shocked me for this practice used even then of not having brick houses, while everybody in Europe, Middle East, Asia is keen on having brick houses only
5. The rooms are not luxurious for our times, yet representing the style back then and which you still can find in many places in Europe - I am talking about the 4 poster bed and wall designs in the ground floor rooms. The rooms have been painted as they were in Washington's time and in one of the rooms you will see one of the Bastille keys given to Washington by La Fayette
6. There are some artefacts from back then which the guides will point to you and where La Fayette stayed when visiting Washington
7. From here we moved to the grounds, seeing the area from the house overlooking the Potomac as Washington was over viewing his business (reminded me of the many cathedrals in Spain, Portugal and Italy where from the Inquisition was looking at the ships bringing goods in) descending then to his grave, beautifully kept with that of his wife Martha, and then to near the river where from we took the shuttle bus bringing us back to the museum area
8. The museum is further packed with information and habits from those times: there is the dress worn by Martha when marrying Washington plus the jewellery. Lots of information about the revolution and Washington's life.
9. The shop had lots of items to purchase however we had to leave because of a group of very nosy teenagers longer than me, pushing you aside, shouting etc - the whole place was like a zoo and the poor security guy was looking in disbelief. I wonder how much information these kids remained with?
10. The car park has lots of spaces, yet I doubt in summer time will be enough for all the visiting people - as we left (Saturday, before Easter, at lunchtime, was already packed.
11. Simply gorgeous area and grounds - we might come back in the future

Mount Vernon is a fantastic place to visit. I highly recommend the mansion tour. You get to see both floors including Washingtons bedroom, Martha's desk, the kitchen, and many rooms. It's very cool to see stuff that old. We also got to see all of the buildings on the grounds including George & Marthas tomb.

tour of the mansion, and grounds, I was impressed by the luxurious interior, and the guest rooms in the building. the tour was not as expected the guide did not really give a very interesting tour. I was glad we visited it, however When we visited Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home). it was a much better tour than this tour).

We bought grounds pass and mansion tour a couple of days ahead. The 2pm “Enslaved People of Mt Vernon Tour” was already full. It didn’t appear to be a very busy day. At 10:30am we got convenient parking and walked a short distance to the entrance. We watched the short movie then saw the outbuildings to the left of the mansion in the hour before our timed mansion ticket. After the mansion we toured the outbuildings to the right of the mansion, walked down to the tomb and the Enslaved peoples memorial, down to the wharf, up through the farm area to the barn and log house. Then we took the free shuttle back up to the Donald W Reynolds museum, shops, and restaurant. We were there for a surprising 5 hours! It was a lovely day and we stopped at the food truck for refreshments, went to the short movie in the DWR museum… The only suggestion I would offer to Mt Vernon is to create some lanes and signage to queue up for the timed tours. It was a bit confusing as the timed tickets are only 5 minutes apart. Lots of museums have similar timing with lanes and signage.

We brought a group of 75 middle school students to Mount Vernon last week. All the chaperones were given bright stickers to wear. We stayed with our children the whole time. Many times the adults who were running the tour spoke down to us and the students. They were critical of us and the students for not staying mixed to a ratio they were happy to see. Our students were excellent and I am very proud of how they represented our school. I will not recommend that we return here next year because the tour guides were too negative and looked down on us. I am sorry that you represented Mount Vernon in this manner, it does not look good on you.

What is the difference between the Standard Mansion tour included with a grounds pass and the “In-Depth Tour?” Is it recommended to do both, or would the standard portion be repeated by the “In Depth” version?
We are planning to do the “In-Depth,” and just want to know if we should also do the standard tour.

Is the second floor closed because of covid? What was allowed to be toured before covid? Will those areas be re-opened?

The second flloot is closed because of COVID. My understanding is that it was previously open and will hopefully open in the future if COVID restrictions are lifted.

How did you book that private tour?
James S
تورونتو, كندا27 مساهمة
The tour of the mansion is not a private tour; however it is a timed-tour. You will have to purchase tickets from the box-office for a specific time. The earlier you arrive at the site, the better of a chance to get in at a decent time. The rest of the property and museum is "walk trough at your own pace and it is mainly outdoors!" Well worth the walk around as the grave of Washington is part of the walking outside tour.

I see there alot of add-ons available to the general price of admission (slave quarters, audio headset, etc). What exactly is covered in JUST the price of admission? Can we see any of the add-ons without paying extra?
Chris L
Niles, ميتشجان788 مساهمة
A simple answer is no to having the add-ons included in the general admission price. We did not use any of the add-ons and still found the place quite interesting. There is a lot to be discovered on a self-guided tour. You need to look closely at what the add-ons include and determine if they are worth the extra cost. Our general admission gave us a very nice overview of Mt. Vernon and in all the places there is signage to help you understand what you are looking at.

We will be going to Mount Vernon before flying out. Is there a place to check two small suitcases so we don’t have to lug them around?

I think this is a special request that you would need to contact a manager at Mount Vernon to discuss.

We will be staying in Arlington with no car in the summer. I am interested in the Mt. Vernon tour but it doesn't seem very easy to get there from Arlington and not very close (almost 20 miles). We will be spending most of our time in DC so is this out of the way. Is the trek worth the visit if we are short on time?

Take the yellow line metro to Huntington Station. Catch metrobus 101 (at shelter E at bus station). Takes you right to Mt Vernon. Easy! Definitely worth seeing.

It wasn’t that good anyway and it was a waste of time and money to do the tour and the boat ride. They rushed you through the house and the guy on the boat read from the book.

Is there a dress code for Mount Vernon Inn at dinner? We will be visiting on a Saturday in August, we have planned to stay the whole day, we will eat a early light lunch at the food court, then planning on getting dinner reservations at the Mount Vernon Inn around 5:30 pm to top off our day. Since it will mostly likely be hot, we will mostly likely be in shorts with a nice shirt. Thanks!

No dress code that I saw. I would imagine that shoes and shirts are required.
