‪Visit on New Year’s Day was fun and informative despite the rain, great to ride in very comfortable steam-hauled 3rd class compartment carriage. Engine shed was interesting and atmospheric as usual. The only thing that lets Didcot Railway Centre down is the cafe — distinctly British Rail rather than GWR quality sandwiches, chips and sausage rolls — disappointing as they could do so much more. Cafe also needed someone to clean tables, we were there before 12 and the place already looked messy — not what we expect in covid-aware times.‬

‪My 8 year enjoyed the models and the signal box, The Santa train and the gift was great.
It would be good if more engines and carriages were open to look at.‬

We allow visitors into the engine shed where all the engines are available to see and even touch which is unusual for a museum. We do have to be careful with children climbing in carriages or on engines for obvious safety reasons and engines tend to be oily which some parents are not too happy about when it gets on the new coat. Come back in the Summer

‪A great day for adults and children. Lovely friendly staff, and tucked away at the rear of Didcot Parkway station. Nice steam train ride, did a couple of shunts and then off to see Santa for a well-received digger! Nicely decorated and undercover place to get some photos with Santa and the Elf, then on to the next train for a short ride to the refreshments. As others have said, the size of the drinks is underwhelming for the price, perhaps keep the espresso cups for kids, and have a more modest cup for the adults. I would've happily paid for a bit more of a selection of snacks at the marquee, as the queue was quite long to go back for the free refills. Lovely outdoor picnic area for kids to let off some steam and adults to sit on the benches and enjoy the scenery. A short walk to the very pleasant and knowledgeable museum keeper to get our 20 pence platform ticket and a lesson in Railwayana. Had a nice, reasonably priced lunch in the café with pleasant and clean indoor and outdoor seating. In to the gift shop after for a Thomas toy, then the perfectly functional toilets for the pre-departure checks. Don't expect Winter Wonderland levels of Christmas decor, it's a large site, seemingly run mostly by volunteers who don't have the million pound budgets of bigger Merlin-style attractions. As a bonus you get to see the main line CrossCountry and GWR high speed trains fly past. Nice day out all round, and definitely more enjoyable if you like trains and not just Christmas!‬

‪Had a really great afternoon at Didcot Railway Centre. Took the family to Steam into Christmas and the kids loved it, especially meeting Father Christmas.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Feeling very festive. Thumbs up from us!‬

‪Steam into Christmas at Didcot Railway Centre was a disappointment. If your main reason for visiting is to see the train museum it would be great I'm sure.

The train ride lasts a few minutes, there are no decorations or anything festive on the train. The elf outside the railway shed where Santa was giving out presents was the best thing there. She did her best to entertain people whilst waiting. The shed itself was quite nicely decorated. It felt a bit rushed meeting Santa as there was a large queue behind. The present was sent down a chute to the children because of Covid, but that is understandable. Then its back on the train for another 2 minute train ride back to the main part of the museum where you get the refreshments. You can chose between mulled wine or watery hot chocolate topped with cream and a marshmallow. These are served in the smallest paper cups imaginable. To go with the drinks you can have a pixie sized mince pie or a minute gingerbread. When you leave the children are given the smallest candy cane I've ever seen.

I mean seriously I know they need to make a profit but this is real penny pinching.

The present the child gets are pretty much what you would expect, a small plastic digger or a small soft toy cat we received.

The rest of the museum was pretty much devoid of any real Christmas decorations apart from the music.

As I say the museum is great the Christmas experience isn't. I'm sorry but I won't be going back.‬

‪Went on Saturday 5th December for the Steam into Christmas event - which was £136 for 4 adults, a 3 year old and 2 one-year olds.
The car park opposite the train station is a good price at £2.35 for the full day on Sundays - and only a short walk to the railway centre.

The ticketing and entrance for the event was clear and quick to access the site. We were a bit disappointed on arrival when we were told that there would only be 2 train rides today and that they weren't doing unlimited rides today. The first train took us from near the entrance to the Santa station - less than 5 minutes on the train including getting on and off. As mentioned by other reviewers- the Santa station is nicely decorated and has plenty of photo opportunities. The visit to Santa was really underwhelming though - we had a total of 30 seconds where Santa said Merry Christmas and his helper slid a present for each child down the slide before we were ushered along. I appreciate that's theres a queue of people to get through but this was not nice and felt too rushed.

Another short train journey of 2-3 minutes took us to the festive tent where we given the smallest cup of hot chocolate I've ever seen - about the size of a shot of espresso. The mince pies were miniscule as were the gingerbread biscuits.

The museum was informative and the volunteer here was really nice with doing the souvenir old style ticket machine.

Overall - we left after spending about an hour in total there and felt short changed. I understand that the railway centre is a charity and staffed by volunteers but this experience was at a premium price and just didn't offer value for money. We won't be doing the Christmas event again.‬

I am sorry you left disappointed. I reply to a couple of your points :- £136 for 4 adults and 2 children is about £22 per person which compared to many other event is not expensive. Most visitors spend 2-3 hours on our site and you do get a present. The drinks are supplied in small cups but you can have free refill which suits children as larger cups contain too fluid much and end up being tipped away and therefore wasted. You visited us on our first day and we will take your comments on board and work on the areas you felt were disappointing.

‪Visited for the Steam into Christmas event but were disappointed with the overall experience.

The tickets cost £83 for 4 adults and and a 4 year old which seemed reasonable until a £20 booking & facility fee was added at checkout! I appreciate these places are expensive to run and maintain but this seemed excessive!

The instructions explained the centre was a 10 minute walk from the car park (another £4.50 per car) which was accurate, however it's a particularly unpleasant walk, all outdoors with lots of steps and the lack of signage made for some confusion.

Once we arrived at the event we were greeted very nicely and the entrance tent seemed very festive and well decorate, however, that's where the festivity seemed to end! Once through the entrance we were left to wander the large, open and very cold site trying to find the refreshment tent - the email instructions said you could pick up the free refreshments before the train and take them with you however there was no signage again and the tent was so far away we did not have time for this before the train journey. Instead we sat in a rather drab cafe and paid £15 for 2 sausage roles, a small tray of chips and 2 cartons of ribena!

We waited on the platform for the train where none of the staff or conductors attempted to greet or speak to us, we assumed we should open the door and chose a cabin by ourselves however upon entering the cabin we were unsure if we were in the right section as there were no decoration or anything remotely festive. The train went back and forth on the line for no more than 10 minutes, stopping and starting until we reached our destination, at which we had no idea if we were supposed to get off or wait for the doors to be opened. Eventually a lovely older gentleman came over and explained it was time to get off.

We waited in line in the freezing cold to see Santa in a train shed, the decorations were nice but it felt like being ushered along a production line. There was a friendly gentleman dressed as an elf who made the effort to have a picture with my daughter. When it came time to see Santa he was stood on a higher platform, said a brief hello and then an elf slid a gift down a chute to my daughter, we felt we had to rush on to allow the next family so had a quick picture. He was by far the least convincing Santa we have seen so far with a very fake beard which he had to adjust several times. After this very quick experience we then waited in the cold again for a smaller train to take us back to the main area.

When we arrived back we were let off near the free refreshment tent, it was about 2pm and the tent was a mess with litter everywhere and the staff were not in great spirits! We were given our refreshments included in the (£83) ticket price - a tiny sample cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate, a mini mince pie from a multi pack and a tiny gingerbread man from a plastic supermarket pack.

We then wondered back through the museums, stopping at the various attractions which, although interesting with informative staff, were not remotely festive.

The toilet facilities were an absolute disgrace, clearly not attended throughout the event, messy and unclean with ice cold water from the taps and hand dryers which were as much use as your own breath.

Overall, this was not a good experience for the price. There was a lack of festivity in most areas, the refreshments were stingy and we spent a total of around 12 minutes on trains - not ideal for an event titled 'Steam into Christmas'! I would not recommend this event and would definitely not attend in the future. The only saving grace was a half decent present from Santa and some lovely staff around the venue.‬

Hi I am sorry you did not enjoy your visit. We will take your comments on board. This was our first open weekend and the weather was extreme and we will work to get everything right for this coming weekend. The toilets will now be attended as we underestimated the impact of 500 children on our facilities. It would seem children all leave the taps on after washing their hands! Food and drink were in small portions for children but free refills are available.

‪No Christmas magic at all!

We paid £70 for 3 of us- 2 adults & our 16 month old. We nearly didn’t book it as it was originally £50 & then they stuck £20 booking fee on top for some reason, but my husband decided we should go for it. This is the first Xmas that our boy Is aware of what’s going on & loves trains so thought this would be a great visit!
I have to say we were very underwhelmed & there was not a lot of Xmas magic at all.
The initial train ride was good fun even though not decorated for Xmas, and was a bit of a wait in the bitter cold! Not fun with a small one.
There was then a bit of a queue for Santa & was nice to take some pics but again the magic just wasn’t there! No music, had some decs up but could have been lit up more with some lights as was getting quite dark by late afternoon. Santa was stood away on a train and the present rolled down on a ramp by a young person with an elf hat on. Was nice to be greeted & have a pic with the old guy as an elf first but why couldn’t you do that with SantaZ
too?? The elf also would have made for a better Santa as he had an actual very long beard.

The train then took you to the central part & got given a tiny hot choc each & mince pie at this little tent. I mean for £70 could we not have had a bigger hot choc? It was freeeezing!

There was a brass band playing as we left but that would have been nice to hear in the centre.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place as a Xmas event, but maybe on a normal day at probably half the price then maybe…‬

Hi I am sorry you were disappointed. The weather was terrible which never helps! This was our first day and we will take your comments on board and improve the Santa experience. Drinks and food are supplied in small sizes to suit children but refills are not restricted.

‪We booked tickets for 4 of us at a cost of £86. We didn't feel the experience represented this value. The primary reason for our visit was for our kids (boys age 3 and 5) to meet Santa. Whilst I get this can't be changed, the venue is very exposed with little shelter. It was bitterly
cold for our kids and very windy on the day we visited which was not pleasant given there are limited sheltered areas.

We were given a time for our santa train and boarded. It was not well organised or clear what we were supposed to do. We got into our carriage and the train went up and down for about 10 minutes then we had to get off. The train was not decorated at all and no staff showed us what to do. There was confusion when we got off. We figured out we needed to go to another shed though there were no signs. Inside was santa but he was up high and an elf slid presents down a chute to our kids. Santa said hello but didn't engage at all. It was utterly disappointing. I get social distancing is in place but he could have asked them if they had been good and what they had on their Christmas list. The boys had been thinking all morning what to tell him and were upset they didn't get a chance - it was the whole point of our visit! That's why you take your kids to see santa! Unforgivable.

The gifts we were given were plastic rubbish. They were not age appropriate (both the 3 and 5 year old got the same plastic diggers) and were gender biased. In this day and age most places are now moving away from pink and blue parcels. Big disappointment.

After seeing santa we had to wait ages for another train with only 1 carriage to shuttle us back towards the main part. We weren't sure what was happening which led to us missing the first train and having to wait 10 minutes on a very drafty cold platform for the next one despite having been at the front of the queue for the first one. The journey back was 5 minutes.

There was an opportunity for refreshments when we got off the train but there was a long wait inside a crowded tent and no dairy free options for our kids. As the covid risk was too high to go in we were unable to partake. We left straight after.

In all we came away in under 1.5 hours very disappointed and feeling like we had been ripped off. We wouldn't recommend it. Neither child enjoyed it. It was a waste of money.‬

The weather was foul and it was our first open weekend. I am sorry you were disappointed and we take your criticism and work to improve our event. All the presents are by nature gender neutral but the packing colour does help us to give a present that will not be unwrapped and returned as unwanted which would happen in a large percentage our presents if not managed in anyway. Returned presents would need to have been destroyed as I am sure you would not want a previously opened present given to your child. We had over a thousand visitors on the day and our visitor survey of the day was very positive. Please visit us in the Summer when you will feel more comfortable with the weather and hopefully Covid will be less worrying for you.

‪Really enjoyable museum, with a wide range of trains and other Great Western railway related things to see and do for all ages! I visited on a day that trains weren’t running but there was still plenty to see and do to fill a day. I’ve been going past on the train for years and never made it inside, so I was really pleased to get the chance to go - thank you!‬
