This was a surprisingly, wonderful visit for the first time to join the Nightingale Safari.
Our party of 5 arrived at 8.00pm and were soon made comfortable with glasses of an organic Spanish Rose before dinner which was served in the Cow Barn at 8.30pm. The resident cook had prepared a superb vegetarian curry complete with trimmings of hot naan bread, chutney and extra veg such as cauliflower and new potatoes. Very satisfying and there were second helpings for everyone. The wine continued to flow with a local white wine proving very popular. The dessert was a homemade chocoltae sponge with chocolate or cream sauce.
From 10.00pm one of the two superb guides gave a short presentation on the Nightingale which provided a fascinating and informative insight, At 10.30pm the guests were split into two groups of about 20 and headed out `onto` `the 3,500 acre estate to listen to the late night mating calls of the male. This event only lasts from approx mid-April to end of May by which time they all hope to be paired for the season. As I am disabled the estate kindly provided a driver and an all-terrain buggy in which to follow the main tours. This was invaluable. We all heard the extraordinary voices of these little brown birds so it was a magical evening.

The safari was great. Tom was the guide and he was very informative, listened to what we wanted to get out of it and answered our questions. We had some very interesting discussions ranging from ecology and rewilding to the climate crisis etc. We knew we would be taking pot luck with what we managed to see but we were lucky to see grass snakes, a vole, many birds (including white storks - hard to miss them!) and heard a nightingale.

You never know what you'll see when you visit nature, but before we even set out we saw a stork nest, high in a tree, with baby storks so we knew we were in for a treat. Adam, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and set just the right atmosphere. We learnt so much and felt enthused for rewilding even in my garden at home. We saw highland cattle and calves, Exmoor ponies, even a turtle dove singing her beautiful song in a tree. We had delicious refreshments in a field under an oak tree. It felt a genuine place, practising what they preach, and I loved it! Do wear trousers and good boots, and take cash for the honesty box to buy their meat/goodies to take home.

This half day safari was excellent and our guide, Tom was the perfect mix of knowledgeable and funny. Don’t necessarily expect to see lots of species you’ve never seen before, it’s about appreciation of the natural world and the re-wilding work going on at Knepp. The estate is beautiful and the tour encourages you to take frequent stops to look and listen. The weather had been dry for several days when we went, this made the short walks easy but did mean we had a bit of a bumpy ride on the vehicle in places, if you don’t mind that, it adds to the fun. The toilets in the old grain silo were very impressive but there are no facilities elsewhere (rightly so), so be prepared to have a wild wee if you get caught short during the 3 hour tour. Binoculars were available to borrow and the refreshments halfway through the tour were a nice touch. It might seem expensive but we came away feeling we had a great experience that was worth every penny, we will definitely be going back sometime in the future to do one of the other tours.

Very interesting 3.5 hour tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, patient and enabled us to see and understand far more than if we had walked on our own. I cannnot recommend this enough - how farmland has been transformed to a wildlife haven. Thank you

What a magical afternoon! Slowing down to appreciate the diversity that has evolved was just what we needed. Saw roe and red deer 🦌 including a magnificent old stag at close quarters. Storks were abundant and we heard turtle doves, nightingales, woodpeckers and cuckoos. My 18 year old who was only there on sufferance absolutely loved it and proved to be a really good spotter. Already planning our second trip…

We did a three-hour safari on foot with an expert guide, which was a fascinating experience. We got close encounters with the longhorn cattle, exmoor ponies and even a skittish herd of fallow deer. The birds were a little more elusive, partly due to the time of year as most were singing from dense cover. However, we had the ubiquitous white storks to keep us entertained as well as various buzzards, kestrels and kites. I can heartily recommend this experience to nature lovers. The safari was billed as three hours, but actually we were out a little longer than that, so can't complain about value for money. The guide was happy to answer all questions, and the refreshments laid out under a tree halfway round were a lovely touch.

I had read all about Knepp and it's mission and purpose in Wilding and knew I had to visit. I visited with my Dad on a beautiful May afternoon who is a avid nature lover and has also read the book.
Our guide was incredibly knowledgable and was obliging with the group's many questions!
The sky was full of song and we heard nightingales, cuckoos, wrens, lesser whitethroats, garden warblers and song thrush. The storks are a sight to behold, I've never seen such big nests!
The ground is very uneven (but fairly flat, no steep hills on our route at least). I was fine in trainers but walking boots would have probably been better. I read in other reviews wellies are provided in wet weather.
What a beautiful, joyous place. There's no doubt I'll be visiting again.

We joined the Nightingale safari on Thursday 11th May 2023.
We were treated to a wonderful supper that catered for vegans and those with wheat sensitivity.
An excellent talk gave us lots of information about the nightingales as well as a recording of their song so that we’d know what to listen for.
Then off on the safari, this took about one hour, and as it had been very wet and there were a lot of muddy areas, wellies were provided!
We were taken to several different places and the nightingales obliged with their beautiful song. It was fantastic to listen under a clear heaven of stars.

I don’t want to leave a good review because then everyone will want to go & I won’t be able to book anything. We went as a group of 8 & it was fantastic. Our guide was so knowledgeable & we didn’t feel like he was in a hurry to get back on the dot. We heard & saw cuckoos, nightingales, turtle doves, linnets, black caps, lesser white throats, garden warblers, White storks, Tamworth pigs, Longhorn cattle, ponies, fallow deer…. To top it all, the weather was perfect!

Do you have to pay or can you just go for your own walk?

You can definitely just go for a walk. They have maps at the gates. There are different coloured walks.

Yes, toilets at the beginning/ end of the walk and tea/coffee/soft drinks plus chocolate brownies left for us to enjoy at a viewing platform part way through.

Yes they definitely allow dogs on leads on footpaths (one of the reasons wild boar weren't introduced)..sorry for delay in replying
