We travelled from Stoke on Trent to visit Pontefract race course. We met friends and had a great day out.
Throw a few winners into the mix to top it off!
The ladies that served us were excellent.

I've been to Pontefract for years and I will give everyone an honest opinion.
Car parking facilities - they are a joke. Parking is free however, when leaving Pontefract it is a nightmare, there is one road out and 4 car parks merge to this one road and everyone is fighting to get out. Be prepared to be waiting at least 45 minutes to leave. Absolute farce. Parking is on grass which is unkept so when it rains it can be difficult to get your car out safely as it does become muddy. Train station is a short walk away.
Entry fee - fair fee for Grandstand and Paddock. Never experienced the rest of the facilities. Get to stand at the rails or in the Grandstand near the winning post, got entry to the paddock which bang in the heart of Pontefract.
Paddock and Grandstand area - paddock area is small, can get quite crowded during busy meetings but well kept and seating surrounding the paddock. The Grandstand gives everyone great views of the track, needs a refurbish and can become very crowded on the busy meetings.
Drinks and food - the part of the puzzle that really let's Pontefract down, appalling prices. £6.50 a pint of strongbow dark fruits, £2.50 for a can of coke, £4.50 for a tiny chip butty etc etc the prices are absolutely scandalous. A family of four would have to stump up £10 for 4 cans of pop, that's after entry fees and food. It starts to become a very expensive day out based on this. Considering that Pontefract is outdated and needs major refurbishment, these prices are ludicrous to say the least. The pricing needs a major rethink, otherwise they'll see people go to other venues which will be more affordable and cheaper and more value for money. Pontefract races must address the prices or people will stop coming. Even the staff working there said the prices are ridiculous. £4.50 for a chip butty and the bread is not even buttered.
Atmosphere - decent, friendly, would personally avoid evening meetings if you have children.
Overall, Pontefract is a decent day out. Decent racing, cracking views of the course and paddock. However, the parking facilities and the prices are ridiculous so be prepared to spend a few quid if you attend.

Visited yesterday, 5th April 2022 with a party of 14 in the Dalby Box to celebrate my husband’s 60th.
Booking was straight forward and handled by very pleasant people. We were allowed to go over the day before to decorate the room.
The buffet was plentiful and tasty, the staff in the box were extremely helpful especially the gentleman who went over and above , finding us a phone charger and a candle - thank you .
Betting was easy with a lovely lady outside the room.
Only small issue was the parking - very muddy resulting in shoes been covered in mud 😢.
All in all a fab day, we will be back 😊.

I attended the last meeting of the season at Pontefract, due to covid I had not been for a while. Trying to park in the Disabled area was the usual stumbling block, bookmakers unloading parked across vacant disabled bays, the parking attendant tried to direct me to the small car park opposite, however I declined the last time I was put in there I had to wait over 1 hour to get out as someone had blocked me in. However the van that was unloading moved and I was able to park. Why they can not use the spaces on the road across from the Disabled is beyond me. Had a meal in the self-service restaurant which was good value for money and was very nice and filling. Disappointing it rained, I would have given 5* the parking let it down.

First time at Pontefract races today. Was very impressed. Very well organised. And excellent facilities. Even the rain didn't spoil our day. Will definitely go again.

This racecourse has to be one of the worst in Britain having visited it today I was most disappointed. I should have known by the dirty rails that surrounded the racecourse from the road what I was letting myself in for.
The entrance had a very musty smell to it and the restaurant wasn’t much better.
Anyway once in the park restaurant it was clear that the young waitress wasn’t very confident in her job as she kept repeating herself however I said I was ready for my starter.
Very disappointed there was no choice she just bought over a plate of fish that I am allergic too and that was that so I politely declined and stood in line for my roast.
The chef cut the meat so thin you could almost see through it and the rest wasn’t too bad.
I found the layout very upside down and everything seemed to be in the wrong place getting to watch the race was a challenge in itself from where I was situated and due to all the walking I decided after getting marooned on the wrong side of the winners enclosure to stay put and watch it on the monitors. The waitress’s were over friendly and it was nice for a while but not when you are in the middle of watching your race.
Anyway another one off the tick list but I definitely won’t be returning to a racecourse that badly needs a face lift and a change of venue in my opinion.
I will end with a plus point and say all the staff were very friendly and helpful and probably keep this place going so good on them but personally I won’t be returning again that’s it.
Regards Martin.

Very friendly local track - with people having a good time on a Sunday afternoon - reasonable facilities given covid restrictions. Easy to access from motorway.

Can I take alcohol into pontefract race course
Ponte R
Pontefract, England, United Kingdomمساهمة
Picnics are welcomed in every enclosure EXCEPT the Premier Enclosure.
A small amount of alcohol can also be brought in to the Racecourse as part of a picnic. This equates to a maximum of 4 cans per person or half a bottle of wine per person. However, please note that no glass bottles can be brought in to the enclosures. If you would rather bring spirits, please bring the pre-mixed cans.
There are a number of food outlets around the Racecourse and we have additional items available at every race meeting that can be added to your raceday tickets. There are also a number of vending vans available throughout the Racecourse enclosures.

Is the racecourse within walking distance of Tanshelf railway station & if so is it easy to find?

Yes it’s about a 2 minute walk. You come out of the train station and is straight across the main road. You can’t miss it.

I’m thinking of booking a table in your premier dining room. But does it get busy and how many tables/ seats are there. 😉
Ponte R
Pontefract, England, United Kingdomمساهمة
The Dining Room holds around 100 - 120 people depending on the size of the tables. We normally cater for at least two sittings throughout a race meeting

You can bring a dog into the picnic enclosure as long as he/she is kept on a lead

Can you take your own alcohol?
Ponte R
Pontefract, England, United Kingdomمساهمة
Thanks for the message.
You can take a small amount of alcohol as part of a picnic in to any enclosure other than the Premier Enclosure.
Please note that, following the tragic events in Manchester this week, there will be an increased security presence and anyone bringing in a bag of any description will be searched at every entrance.
Many thanks
