‪What a wonderful experience to discover these pretty woodland gardens. Really lovely place, it feels natural. The gardens are inside a gorgeous mixed woods. Plenty parts, nooks and crannies, benches, formal garden, a hill with a view, ponds, gorgeous plants and trees. Magical.‬

‪Beautiful gardens, very well maintained. Give a real sense of the lovely microclimate that the Isle of Gigha has.
Lovely viewpoint and connected walking/cycling trails to rest of island. ‬

‪Review of Achamore Gardens, Isle of Gigha, Hebrides, Scotland.

Bright sunny weather – not warm, mind you – but pleasant and there is nowhere we would rather have been that mid-July than Kames on the west coast of Scotland. Kames is a small village on the western side of the Kyles of Bute towards the southern tip of the Cowal Peninsular. We were on the mainland adjacent to the Hebrides – an area of islands, islets, coastal indentations – rugged, largely empty country that faces the Atlantic Ocean. Of the order >90,000 people live in the Hebrides.
Once home to the original tribal Celtic people, the region – islands and mainland - has been subjected to profound socio-economic pressure during recent millennium from invading Vikings to feuding clans, confrontations, the imposition of British rule, highland clearances and, in more recent times, the impact of emigration to the mainland and further afield – to the Americas and Australia. The infertility of the land, poverty and issues of food security have always impacted upon local people.
Services dominate the socio-economic development of modern communities, however, and we were there to explore whatever was of interest during the day; we had the Island of Gigha in mind as a destination with focus upon the Achamore Gardens. There were two ferries to negotiate – the pleasure of leaning over a railing to one side of the ship with the dark green hills, beaches, trees, rocks and limited sea traffic slowly passing – the one terminal fading back into the scenery as the other gradually imposed itself – twice! There was the same adventure to look forward to on the return journey with the added pleasure of a BBQ meal on the beach in mind. We were a group of three families - 11 people in three cars.
The group stayed together for the 6 km crossing on the Portavadie to Tabert Ferry and to the second ferry at Tayinloan 30 km further south and across the narrow peninsular. The Isle of Gigha* was just 20 minutes away by another of Messrs Caledonian MacBrayne’s popular ferryboats. This time we left one car behind at the terminal. The gardens that we had in mind were just a couple of km from the terminal along friendly roads with occasional groups of white houses that make up the village of Ardminish – easy walking. Away from the community by the ferry, the road became track-like before turning into the entrance to the gardens. This is where you meet the first of that dense tree cover – which is not typical of the surrounding country – parking the cars beneath the trees.
Pickup a brochure on the ferry or at the ticket kiosk and there’s a potted history of the gardens from origins to the modern day. The gardens cover about 20 ha natural/planted woodlands and contain a large walled garden. A benign climate has enabled normally frost-susceptible plants to grow many of which are exotic and have been collected from around the world. The gardens followed the construction of the main house in 1884 and the earlier purchase of the island by the Scarlett family. The 1 ha walled garden at the back of the house dates from this period, but the extensive planting that comprises the gardens today dates from the mid-1940s when ownership passed to James Horlick. In 2002 ownership of the entire island shifted to the island people themselves within a heritage trust that encompassed the house and gardens. This included the Horlick Collection of rhododendrons.
Walk the gardens today and the impression that remains is one of endless floral decorations along the herbaceous borders with an extensive back cloth of tree cover. Signposts describe locations based on the dominant species – Camelia Walk, Bamboo Maze, etc. with different trees/shrubs highlighted for their size, age, novelty and/or botanical excellence – Abies Kawakamii (Taiwan), Atherosperma moschatum (Australia), Dahurian larch (Siberia), etc. Follow the map provided when purchasing your entry ticket to target the different parts of the collection that may be of personal interest. Entry charges were £7/adult & £5/kids 5-16. There are also family tickets available £20 (2xAs & 2xKs).
Notwithstanding the botanical excellence of the gardens, there is only so much that can be taken in during a single visit and, more particularly, when you have little kids in tow. Rain would present an additional challenge. The gardens have extensive areas of grassed lawns which provide an opportunity for the kids to run around/play/chase/hide&seek. If you have a ball in the car, make certain that it’s in your backpack together with your lunch snacks.
On the way back to the ferry terminal, we stopped off for tea/coffee at the Boat Shed – a quaint little house converted into a gorgeous beachside restaurant – what a setting (on a fine day in July). Park in-line for the ferry (particularly if you’re early) and walk back – you can see your car and the approaching ferryboat from the restaurant – it’ll take you five minutes.

‪You can see that once upon a time these gardens were wonderful but sadly now they're quite overgrown, messy and uncared for.
It would take a herculean effort to restore them and there's no evidence to suppose it'll happen, so sadly I really wouldn't waste my time or money coming here.‬

‪Rhodies & azaleas not really flowering in August, but the walled garden was a sun trap - head burnt again :-)
You get a feeling for the effort and dedication that went into building up this collection and design - and the level of upkeep necessary to bring it back to its original glory.‬

‪Fantastic garden which the community have one a great job of maintaining. Walled garden especially nice. Could do with some more plant labels and there is huge potential to open up other parts of the garden‬

‪Lovely gardens despite the rhodies and azaleas not in flower Plenty of other plants and trees to see. Good paths I got round great on my mobility scooter. Lovely walled garden with picnic benches so great for al fresco meal. There's no tea room, but there are lovely clean toilets. Very helpful gardeners who will tell you what you need to know. Well worth a visit if you are on or going to gigha, we hope to return when rhodies etc are in flower.‬

‪We noticed this summer that many attractions are showing the after-effects of closures and furloughs during Covid, and to give this garden the benefit of the doubt, that is probably what has happened here. We paid the suggested £15 entrance for 2 adults via the honesty box and found ourselves in a rather overgrown woodland with a few arrows here and there suggesting the route. There were occasional signs to tell you what the plants were, but the paper map was extremely hard to relate to what you see. The walled garden had hints of what it might look like, and there is a set of stairs at the back that are worth climbing to see the view at the very top over to Jura and Islay (we think! but it's impressive anyway). There are toilets, which is a bonus, but the best thing about visiting this garden was the rope swing we found after we left it on the newly laid path out to the road. Hopefully they will be able to restore this garden to its full potential over 2022, as it has the possibility to be a beautiful place.‬
