This is a really well done memorial that presents the facts and conveys the experiences of the unjust forced removal of Japanese-American and Japanese Bainbridge islanders, through basic history, personal perspectives, photos, artistic depictions and the design of the memorial itself. It’s a moving remembrance, in a peaceful setting (which only highlights the brutality of removal and internment) with a pace and spareness that creates space for reflection.

If you'll read the family's stories it could help you imagine the time, even though it truly hurt my heart. Everyone's takeaway will be different no matter your nationality. Overheard one person say that after the bombing of Pearl Harbor the island residents feared that their longtime neighbors and friends could be Japanese spies. Add to this the nearby location of Keyport Naval Torpedo Station AND Bangor Submarine Base might have made the area the next target.
When you get to the end, consider how the sound of your footsteps change, from the gravel to the dock, the sound their last footsteps made when they boarded the boat taking them away from their home.

This memorial is well worth a visit. It explores one of the most inhumane decisions ever made by the US government and the thousands of citizens impacted. The outdoor exhibit is beautifully curated with stories of several Japanese-Americans displaced to horrendous relocation centers and forced to give up their property.
A very moving and educational memorial.

I lived on Bainbridge Island 20 years ago when this memorial was just a dream and was incredibly moved to go back for a visit to the island and see it as a reality. Whoever you are and wherever you're from, the internment of Americans of Japanese descent during World War 2 is an incredibly important story to learn and share. This beautifully done memorial noting the ferry dock where the very first group was founded up from their own homes and deported and interned in their own country captures very local stories in ways that make this chapter come to life.

Japanese Citizens suffered the severe pain and indignities of being forced into camps during WWII. Many lost their lands and homes. Bainbridge Island has a lot of history relative to this sad chapter of our country's history and this memorial explains that in a wonderful way honoring the many islanders who were victims. This is a must see if visiting Bainbridge.

Very moving memorial with personal significance for me. The structure itself is beautiful, & we were lucky enough to be able to hear part of a ranger-led discussion of the events of WWII & the memorial. This was a spur of the moment stop, & we were so glad that we did.

The information provided via signage was excellent. The woke information provided by the Ranger was not.

Small but beautifully implemented. You get a sense of the deep, deep sadness of the people who were uprooted from their homes, businesses, lives due to the hysteria of wartime and racism.
Worth the drive out, if you walk down from the parking lot and along the path, the panels and woodwork come into view. Also a nice view of the small harbor area at the end of the short pier.
The expression "Nidoto Nai Yoni" - Let it not happen again is still an important message to consider in 2021

Small memorial but the ranger was great and shared a lot of information with us. They have more stuff planned. They recently started the junior ranger program. My kids have done these since they were little and we all enjoy the information in the booklets, this was no different. Sadly this is part of our history I was never taught.

Yes, I believe so.... The gov't wasn't sure who might be a threat in time of war, so some people were asked to move elsewhere for a while. But they came back after the war was over

Along with several private taxi companies, Kitsap Transit, our local transit agency, offers B.I. Ride, an on-demand service that offers loops trip around the island to several stops, including the memorial site. Thus, you will be dropped off and picked up as the bus makes its route, usually giving you about 45 minutes to an hour at the site.
