The 50-state Trivial Pursuit traveling exhibit was a big hit for our visiting grandchildren (ages 4 and 7) this weekend. Very interactive for the kids and the adults learned things as well. Great way to spend an hour or two.

Many towns and cities across the country have museums that tell their stories. East Benton County Historical Museum focuses on Kennewick, Richland, Finley and other communities. This place presents numerous exhibits from the past and does a good job of presenting this part of the county's history and people.

It is not that big....and a lot of stuff is "crammed" in here...but, there is really some nice local historical stuff in here. My boys enjoyed this place. Although, maybe not the BEST place for younger kids....they did enjoy it. However, my boys love history.

This museum has recently hired a new Administrator who is young and very enthusiastic! She is making good strides in turning this museum into an interactive experience. Take your kids and go visit some history!

This museum is the ONLY one to have a display of Kennewick Man, go by and see this. Also the history of Kennewick and the area around it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and would recommend it to others. The docent we had was friendly and chatty with plenty of interesting stories to share as we toured the exhibits.

The East Benton County Historical Museum, built in 1982, contains a pleasant and varied collection of local artifacts and history. The building is located in Keewaydin city park in Kennewick. The first thing you notice on entering the museum is a beautiful polished petrified wood floor.
Many of the displays would be of special interest to adults or senior citizens who have grown up in Benton County. There are displays of common household items from the early 1900's, as well as farm and shop tools, an early dental office, and military uniforms and medals from the World Wars.
There is a large and beautiful collection of Native American arrowheads and spear points. This collection was previously displayed at the museum at Sacajawea State Park over 60 years ago. Unfortunately at the time these items were collected many years ago, no effort was made to document where the items came from, so there is little historical or scientific value to the arrowhead collection. Never the less it displays the amazing skill and artistry of the early native inhabitants of the region.
Another unique display relates to the "Kennewick Man" bones that were discovered on the Columbia River in Kennewick in 1996. When the bones were discovered there was considerable controversy as to the ancestry of the bones and if they should be studied scientifically or returned to a Native American tribe for burial. At the time of this writing (07/2016) the actual bones are being temporarily stored in a museum in Tacoma and are awaiting return to the Native American tribes.
A visit to this museum would make a pleasant hour or so of exploration. Please note that many of the displays are not behind glass, so the museum is not appropriate for young children unless they are kept in close control. There are no interactive displays for children.
