We visited on an October weekend of this year and found the Hatchery to be closed and surrounded by chain-link fence, with a construction trailer, due to a full renovation along with some excavation. I believe it won't be open again until the Spring of 2019. If you have time, before thinking of a visit, look for a Washington State Fisheries web-site that may be able to give a more definite time-line for the renovations.

The Puyallup Fish Hatchery is open daily. It is strictly a self-guided walking tour. You have to call for a guided tour. The fish hatchery has been there since the 1940's and is alive and well. Fun to see. It's worth a quick visit. Plan for about an hour.

The Puyallup Hatchery is twofold--the hatchery and the historical foundation. The hatchery is open during daylight hours, seven days a week and all of the holding ponds are accessible to view both Salmon and Trout in various stages of their growth cycle. One pond is for the 'pets' and is accessible to feed the fish by the visitors--and these are some huge trout. The hatchery will be undergoing renovation and modernization within the next year. The Historical Hatchery Foundation is a volunteer group that staffs a visitor center on the weekends, accessible to the public and is ADA accessible. They are available for guided tours on a pre arranged basis.

I had no idea how amazing the Puyallup Fish Hatchery is until I went there on a field trip with my grandchildren. Now I go there 3-days a week to hike the trails and walk my dog. I was so impressed with the tour in the field trip I offered to volunteer. Amazing. The fish they spawn to fill rivers, creaks and lakes was so interesting. Glad I went and found out about this awesome place.

Since a youth, I had always considered this place as private little secret spot that nobody else knew about because there was never anybody else there. I'll admit that I haven't been there in many years but will very soon.

We stopped by with our daughter-in-law and our five grandkids (ages 5-11). Because it was on a week day, the education center was not open, and we knew that in advance. However, the main building was accessible for the bathrooms. Even though the education center was closed, the Hatchery has educational signs posted both in front of the building and in the rear. If you read those, you get a very good idea of how the Hatchery works, and the types of fish being raised both at this facility and at other Washington State Hatcheries. The tanks were full of fish, and they were quick to rush to where they saw people standing, since they often get food that way.
If you are interested in a walk in the woods, with a stop on a bridge over a salmon stream, head out the back left hand corner of the Hatchery and bear right on the walking path. The bridge over Clark's Creek is only a hundred feet or so in the woods. In the fall, you will see salmon heading up the creek to spawn. In the summer, the kids will love taking off their shoes and walking in the cold water in the creek. The path continues up away from the creek if you want a longer hike.

I grew up near here and wanted to go visit it again as an adult and it was a bit disappointing. There are basins full of fish but that is about it. I don't know if they ever have a variety of fish, but these were all the same. They could have some more educational things in the building, but there was nothing except signs saying to stay out.

the educational building is great for school age kids and interesting enough for adults the board of directors have made this historic building a place to visit and come back to

There is no public transportation to the Hatchery, The hatchery is operated by the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the historical foundation operates a learning center on site open on Saturday from 10-2 with tours available during the week on a pre-arranged basis. The hatchery is open to the public during operational hours--sunrise to sunset.
