‪استمتعت أنا وزوجي التاريخية عرض نموذج للسكك الحديدية. تشمل العديد من المواضيع المختلفة، جيد جدا بالنسبة للأطفال قضينا حوالي 2 ساعات هنا وتمنيت لو كنا نستطيع الحصول على مزيد من الوقت.‬

‪An Enchanting and Surprising Museum‬

‪The Washington State Historical Society sounds stodgy, but its museum is anything but. Self-guided tour leads from days of fire and ice through indigenous cultures, to 19thC arrival of settlers by wagon and then Intercontinental RRs, to lumbering heritage to travails of 20thC and various immigrant cultures and their contributions. Special interest exhibitions upstairs and a gigantic model railroad of the region -- over 2,000 feet of track and over 100 locomotives -- guaranteed to enchant the 10yr old in all of us.

Good for a few two-hour visits, for there is too much to absorb in one. But if that is all you have to invest, don't fail to take advantage and learn about the rich history of this state.‬

‪This is an average museum. There are some really well done exhibits, but the flow is odd and the fabricated displays take precedence over real artifacts and I always, always feel that museums should tell their story with real artifacts rather than solely signboards, replicas, and dioramas. That was the fatal flaw here. They did have some cool artifacts regardless (a cannonball fired to intimidate natives in 1849, a mastodon tooth, shipbuilding tools) but not the kind of jaw-dropping stuff I expected from a state with as much natural and human history as Washington. There were also lots of native baskets which were neat, but kinda too many and it diminished the impressiveness of the collection as a whole. I would have given 10 baskets to see some more unique items elsewhere in the permanent displays. Also, the scroll wheel for the history of Olympia was missing, so I didn’t get to read that scroll and would have liked to. There was a loud graduation party on the 4th floor that killed the museum vibe, but I know they have to make money and the visitor numbers certainly aren’t doing it. Last gripe - museum store is closed indefinitely.

Those things being said, I learned a lot, and that was the goal. The natural history section at the beginning was the best part, so fascinating. The descriptions of EO 9066 were very thought-provoking as well. And the exhibits, like I said, were really well done. Just not enough primary artifacts to anchor the displays. As a guy who has visited half a dozen state history museums across the country, this one felt average. Interesting, worth the price of admission and two hours of time, but in need of a little extra something to make it truly memorable.‬

‪Disabled traveller in Tacoma‬

‪Check ahead of time to see if it is open (closed Easter Monday). Consult your map and park in the lot closest to the Museum. Although there is a parking lot by the Glass Museum, (also closed) the elevator by the stairs is out of order. I barely got up the stairs to find the museum closed. Fortunately, there were other tourist attractions nearby (McMenamin's Elks Temple.

‪Not the same experience I had several years ago‬

‪My sister and I visited here for 3rd Thursday of the month free admission to the public. While we appreciated not having to pay a fee, our visit was pretty disappointing. I attended the University of Washington Tacoma (just across the street) several years ago, and I remember the museum having more exhibits and offerings. First off, there is not longer a Museum Store. The permanent exhibits on the 3rd floor are still there, which are interesting and well done. Once we went to the 5th floor, however, the fun ended. A lot of that floor is just empty spaces with no exhibits. I don't know what's happened here, but it is truly disappointing. My sister and I were glad we didn't have to pay admission, as we would have felt like we didn't get our money's worth.‬

‪Surprise Find‬

‪What a surprise! Great exhibits on two floors. Budgeted 75 minutes but spent four hours instead. History, revolving exhibits, a great model train setup (296 switches!). Totally awed by the History of Cartoons in the Pacific Northwest. Soooo want to go back for model train exhibits Dec 16-Jan 1. Close to other attractions and UW Tacoma. Good restaraunts in the area. Difficult parking but light rail right in front.‬

‪This is a very nice historical museum with some great exhibits showcasing the State of Washington and how it came about. This id a great place to spend the afternoon. Because of Covid, several exhibits were closed but it was still entertaining. Take a walk across the Chihuly Glass Bridge, it's amazing. ‬

‪My husband and I came to visit and had a wonderful experience ! The exhibits on the 5th floor rotate through out the year so I can’t wait to come back and see others. Make sure you have at least 4 hours to really explore!‬
