Had I paid $18, I would have given this a 3 - it's a smallish museum in terms of exhibit space and some of that was closed. By this time, I was Chihulied out / how much of the same stuff can you see again and again. It's all over the place in PNW, but it's all over the place everywhere (Hollywood FL for example has a large display), and while it's always at least visually interesting, it's also variation on a theme. So, Chihuly, regional art and a smattering of native / outsider pieces. OK, all good fun, and the 5-8 pm freebie made it a worthwhile close of day: but at a full freight ticket, this would be secondary to the museum of glass and maybe get bumped off the list. Beautiful view from the top floor gallery though.

The museum is in down town Tacoma. It’s a beautiful building. We visited to see the Impressionists exhibit. It was very well done. We also toured the Chihuly wing and Northwest wing. Seeing Monet, Degas, and Renoir paintings and sculptures was exciting. Parking behind the museum was easy. I will be returning often.

A very beautiful facility, nestled in the City of Tacoma.
We had parked down stairs, there is paid parking and we tend to over pay paid parking in the event we had stayed longer. The paid parking machine downstairs is by the door that lead you to the elevator entrance, in the event you park far, just know you have to trek back to your car and place your paid parking ticket in there (pays to know your license plate number). We took the elevator up the the main level, fortunately enough they’re only two buttons to press, so it would be nearly impossible to get lost. At the front desk we found out veterans (they require documentations, but who carries a DD214 around) get in for free with the people they are with, so we got to go in for free! The adult prices were $18.00. There is a coat rack and lockers behind reception, I would recommend taking your valuables with you, not worth someone stealing your coat with something important in there.
Our first exhibit was Chihuly glass, they have a small collection, it’s very nice. I’ve been to the Chihuly museum in Seattle, this is 100% the tone down version. Next to that was the French Impressionist which only goes until January 5, 2020. I was looking forward to Monet and Degas paintings, absolutely brilliant.
From there we headed into the Immigrant Artist and the America West, the highlight was probably the Georgia O’Keefe painting of one of 40 paintings of her patio door (lol).

We went to the Tacoma Art Museum just to see the Impressionism exhibit, and discovered the museum is great!
I will be keeping an eye on their traveling exhibits and will return.
I also noticed Tacoma seems clean and inviting.

A lovely collection of artwork - from contemporary Simpson graphics to works by masters such as Monet. A large collection of bronze sculptures, as well as glass art and Native American art. My only criticism is that I expected the museum/galleries to be larger, to be reflective of the entrance fee. We viewed the entire collection in approx 75 minutes. However would definitely recommend a joint visit with the Museum of Glass, located a few hundred yards away.

We went to see The Simpson’s exhibition at this excellent museum. Displaying glass and Degas close together it was well worth the effort. Really well presented and delivered well.

OK, so this is not a five star museum, and I've been to many of those, however, this is a small gem for a regional museum. The Beautiful Glackens and adorable Renoir are reasons enough to visit. There is also an amazing Dustin Yellin piece that makes one think of Bosch in 3D. The Glass collection is quite nice, but, with the Chihuly Bridge and Tacoma Glass Museum right by, the glass collection seems almost a but redundant. The Simpson exhibition was surprisingly enjoyable. Again, this is a small regional museum, however, it really is a little more than that and there are some hidden gems in this collection. Definitely worth a visit. Oh, yeah the parking fee and parking in the are in general, is a little bit of a bummer!

The museum is modern, big, static and void. So much vacant space to me was waisted. Individual galleries tucked here and there it’s like a scavenger hunt. The map guild was a rough guide, signage missing. Fees were $26 per couple with discount. Plus Parking fee $4 for two hours. A tad high. Parking kiosk was confusing with vague instructions.
One a higher note. The Benaroya collection was outstanding.

I read an article about the Tacoma Art Museum exciting expansion with the Benaroya art glass wing which has been completed. We were a tad disappointed to visit just for this specific art glass to find out according to the docent known of it actually is exhibited. Very strange. Small museum to breeze through under an hour but for $26 per couple at AAA rate plus having to pay $4 for 2 hour parking, slightly underwhelmed.
Graciously Rebecca Benaroya originally promised 235 works of art and provided $9.2 million for the construction of the gallery. In December 2017, Rebecca Benaroya promised an additional 118 artworks. The Benaroya Collection now totals 353 works of art. “This additional gift demonstrates Becky’s extraordinary generosity. We are honored once again to be the museum that will share these spectacular artworks,” said David Setford.
If you are an avid art glass collector, I would suggest waiting a bit to go. We did have a lovely lunch at the Murano Hotel which houses a beautiful collection of its namesake along with. Other periods of art glass.

Look on the website for rates. adullt, child, senior and family admission. They don't charge veterans and active military. My husband had his veteran`s ID card and they admitted us both at no charge
