This was my second visit to the Dolly Sods to hike. The high elevation (about 4000’) makes it a unique place in the Eastern U.S. that is more akin to Canada in its biomes, topography, weather, and hiking. Three years ago I hiked the whole thing. Today I hiked several of the loops in the northern half. That’s where the most unique scenery and biome is. It’s hard to access and it takes a long time to get there, but hikes from Bear Rocks off Forest Road 75 are highly recommended. It can be wet (avoid Dobbins Trail). Fall the mud is much less than spring or summer (normally).

Almost inaccessible by car, not much to see once there. The access road is the bumpiest lumpiest portion of 'road' I have ever driven. It is made primarily of large graded in boulders with a bit of limestone over fill on occasion. Honestly, if I'd have known about this accessibility prior to my visit, I would not have gone. Please be forwarded about this hilly, bumpy, windy, dusty travel path.

Sorry, Dolly Sods. We can’t be friends. The drive up and down the mountain (mostly the up part) is a death trap. Skinny 4 mile gravel roads with no railings to deep cliffs on one side of the road and ditches on the other side. The views really just weren’t worth it 🤷🏽♀️. We had to ask directions from random people about how to get out. There is no wi fi (we expected this) but there aren’t very good signs to leave, either. Once we finally got GPS back, we drove to the town of Davis just in time to realize we had a flat from the Dolly Sods roads. Three very kind people stopped to help us put out spare on, all of whom said they’ve seen lots of flat tires from people leaving Dolly Sods. There are no garages nearby, so we had to drive 20 mins on the spare the next morning to get a “new” tire for a standard Honda Accord (it was a used tire). If you are adventurous and willing to take risks, knock yourself out, but we are not going back to Dolly Sods.

Nice challenging hike. Some parts are wide open but other way over grown. Bring lots of water and a ready attitude.

We have been visiting Dolly Sods at least once a year for over 40 years. Our kids and now our grand kids love going there to explore and climb on the rocks. Bear Rocks offers one of the most beautiful views in the whole country. The drive up and back is very scenic as well. In many places the pine trees only have limbs growing on one side because of the constant wind. It’s truly a unique landscape.

Lovely experience but be prepared for ticks. They are mostly around the open tall grass areas. Depending on the trail it is muddy and you may have to hike through some creeks.

We tried to do this one, but it didn't work out. The roads suck, narrow and rough. We braved them for a few miles and then the fog was so thick we couldn't see anything, so we decided it wasn't worth continuing. I don't really know if we were 1 mile from the "view" or 50 miles, there were no signs are clear indications. I personally wouldn't go down that road again, it sucked that bad.

That is definitely a rough road up for a woman taking her senior parents and kids in a sedan. The lack of bathroom facilities is a challenge for my family. What a view though!

The bad road with no signages means we got lost. After three hours we reached sort of look out. It was muddy. Not good experience.

We visited Dolly Sods Wilderness for a day hike with our dog along Red Creek Trail. As a wilderness, trails aren't blazed but there are signs at intersections and it's pretty easy to follow. The water level was very high, so there was no safe way to cross the creek, so we stayed on the trail as far as we could without crossing. There were several nice waterfalls on little tributaries of Red Creek. It's a pretty popular area, but we only saw a few backpackers during our hike.

So I rented a Jaguar XF sedan to drive to WV for my hunny's birthday. I suppose I better return it and take the Tahoe if we wanna do DS loop. Looks like I'd rip the front bumper off that Jag. Kindly konfirm. Thanks!

Hello,
You can drive through Dolly Sods and on to Hopeville>Seneca Rocks>Harman>Dry Fork to complete a loop on nice paved roads with any car you want. Trees, mountains and several naked rock outcrops for your view. Gene

Is poison ivy or poison oak a concern in the Dolly Sods wilderness? Or any other allergenic plants? High pollen count?

Being on the top of the mountain range only small hardy things grow. There is never an area that it totally allergen free, dependent on your sensetivity. I would rather breath this air than most other areas.

I'll be traveling with some older folks and I'm not familiar with the area. Where can I drive to see the view without hiking?

The drive along the road has many spots with short walks to overlooks. It is a slow, bumpy road. There are potholes and gravel. The road is long. Bear Rocks is particularly beautiful and most easily accessed by taking the forest road off Jordan Run Rd.
Hello! A friend and I are headed to Dolly Sods and don't think we will be there early enough on Friday to get a site at the campground. We are worried about finding another easy spot along the road. Could you tell me where you found easy camping along the access road? Any help would be great!

Blackwater Falls State Park is only a half hour away from the dolly sods and have camping sites as well as cabin sites and Lodge. Another state park is also very near with a large and I think they may have campsites to. I can't remember the name of the state park but it begins with a C and it's popular Ski Resort for the area

Bear Rocks with Kids
We will be traveling from Pittsburgh and we are staying in Davis WV. We have 2 days for hiking an exploring with our almost 4 year old, and 7 year old. I really wanted to take them to the Bear Rocks preserve based off of photos I have seen. They will love the boulders and I'm trying to get them to the rocky scenic areas but as I read on I'm wondering if it's too ambitious. Is there an age appropriate hike right to the rocky areas? We will take our time with lots of breaks. Thanks!

You can drive to parking lot right next to Bear Rocks. Walk perhaps 100 yards will put you on Rocks with great views!! There are several bushes/plants so maybe wear lightweight pants to protect legs. Also, no guard rails on top of boulders so easy to fall if not careful. Have a great time!!
We are going to Tennessee from PA and would love to stop and see the Dolly Sod. I was looking at North Fork Mountain Inn in Cabins, WV or Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, WV - are either of these close to the Dolly Sods and if so, which is the closer one? Thank you. Also, any info on the Smokehouse Cavern Resort as well is appreciated.

I'd take Canaan Valley, probably because I'm familiar with it. Davis and Thomas are two interesting small town in their on right, Dolly Sods is fantastic but the roads are fire roads. It can be slow going but well worth the trip. We had heavy rains this spring in the Eastern Panhandle near the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers so you should probably get some local knowledge about the roads before you head out.
Hello people! I'm heading down to the Sods (1st time) with my family.....what is a recommended camping area that would be closer to Bear Rocks, for example. I always prefer to get some insider knowledge instead of banking on maps and reviews. Any advice on where to stay and also where to access more info. on hiking trails, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance and Happy Spring!

Anyone been here in the Spring of 2019 (April)? Since the roads are fire roads, I assume they are all unpaved. I was worried some of the roads might not be passable (flooded) or otherwise impassable. Are the roads okay?

Sometimes the gates to the long stretch of road at Dolly Sods are still closed in early spring. It has happened to me. So that means you cannot drive through and will need to park and hike in. You should probably check with the Monongahela National Forest office in Elkins about any road concerns you have.
