Cool place to visit. The tour was interesting. It was awesome to see the 85' telescope. You don't need to be an astronomer to enjoy this tour. There is NO cell service here or anywhere in the area. You can book your tour online for no wait. It is definitely in the hills.

We opted to do the guided tour with the bus and we didn’t regret it!
Our guide (I want to say Noreen but I could be wrong!!) was fun, friendly and shared a lot of facts on the different telescopes that you can see (from afar on the minibus, no touching and no going passed secured gates!!). There’s also a 10-minute movie prior to the tour (included in the price).
Visiting the hands-on exhibit and the observation deck is free and worth a look!

We hadn't visited the Green Bank Observatory in many years. We enjoyed the tour, which included a brief explanation, a short video and then a bus tour. Very interesting place to visit and learn in a beautiful facility.

Most people have looked through a pair of binoculars or an optical telescope at some point. This is radio astronomy which is only around 100 years old.
It's a little hard to get to, but everything in West Virginia is hard to get to. Driving through mountains takes a lot of time for not a lot of distance gained. You can just walk the public grounds for free if you wish. There's a few exhibits outside. The visitor center has a cafe that serves sandwiches, pizza, soft drinks, and coffee. FYI: The pizzas are 14 inches so they'll serve 2-3 people easily.
There are a few different public tours. The most popular is a bus tour for $10 before taxes. You get a 15-20 minute presentation in their auditorium before you board the bus. FYI: Once you go through the gate you're limited to taking pictures with a film camera only. The electronics are so sensitive they could detect your cell phone in airplane mode from Saturn. Cell phones go into a metal box at the front of the bus. You can get a film camera at the gift shop if you want. Electronics on medical equipment, such as an insulin pump are permitted. Digital cameras, phones, smart watches, FitBits are not.
The bus tour is around 45-50 minutes. You go by several radio telescopes. Some are still in use, others are retired. You'll stop at the Byrd Green Bank Telescope that is in all the postcards. At 485 feet tall and a dish around 360 feet long by 320 feet wide it is massive. It's a too large to fit in the camera frame honestly from where the bus stops. There's a small plaque that shows the interference a cell phone generated from that exact spot.
If you're into science and space, you have to visit this facility if you're in the general area. One word concerning navigation. I used my phone's Google Maps to get here, but unless you have that map saved offline it won't get you out of there. There's NO cell service in the area. It interferes with the radio telescopes. Between my memory of the route going to GBT and various road signs I navigated back to Marlinton where your phone will have signal again.

If you’re a science geek at all, or enjoy movies with huge radio telescopes, this is a must-visit. We did the bus tour, which takes you right up to the telescope. No phones allowed, so no photos. If you go, bring a film camera or buy one at their gift shop before the bus tour.
We then did the “High Tech Tour.” It’s a behind-the-scenes tour that required a background check in advance.
They only do this once a month and we happened to be there on the day, so we took advantage of it. It was, how shall I say, very high tech. An engineer or scientist does the tour, and assumes the people on the tour are also engineers or scientists. I’m an engineer, and I understood most of what they talked about, but my brain hurt by the end. Sharon is neither scientist nor engineer, but she says she was still entertained.

We took the SETI tour and for the geek it is a must do tour. You get to get up close and personal with many of the telescopes. It was very eat to get up to the 140m (BIG) telescope and actually see it moving. The tour concludes with a talk by one of their astronomers in a lounge where, I think is their visiting scientist quarters. It was a great talk at an appropriate level of technicality for the general public. It was an afternoon well spent.
Recommendations: Arrive early. There is a great inter active activity area to learn about radio astronomy. However some area need some love, which is hard for a cash strapped organization. Also walk the grounds. There is so much more to beyond the big dishes.
Just a note the regular tour is just a drive by of the telescopes. You do not get to get up close and personal.

Did not take the bus tour. Lots of neat hands on things to do in the exhibit area. Lots of explanation of what they do on site and what it means. And it was free to go in the exhibit area

An interesting learning experience about telescopes of all kinds and their uses and users. The museum is looking a little bit dated, but still well maintained and informative. I recommend the self guided walking tour to see the massive Green Bank Telescope.

There is a large visitor center with lots of really good exhibits. A regularly scheduled bus tour takes visitors around the complex to view the main telescopes at a distance. Your smartphone must be turned off since this is a no-radio area.

Ya know I would have been happy to go again. The first time was fantastic. However, this time Our group that is planning a trip there soon called because of their covid rules, well like everywhere else in this world Covid has brought out the worst in people. So, our group was planning a trip, and one of the adults called in because he is not vaccinated for Covid due to medical reasons. (And yes, he has a note from his doctor). He talked to someone there, and the person was very rude and told him "I am not going to get into this with you; if you are not vaccinated then you cannot come." all that was asked was in they could explain why there is a requirement for this vaccination and not all others. The point is not that it is a requirement; the issue was that the employee there was so rude and VERY unprofessional. I really think that if you are going to have people that work with the public, they need to learn customer service. This employee needs to be fired and never work in public service ever. Typically, I would give a lot of grace, but in this case, there was no need to be this level of mean therefore I cannot justify any grace for this person. All he needed to do is talk and have an adult conversation. But I guess if this is the type of people the Green Bank Observatory is going to hire and be ok with representing them, then I will not go. Which is very sad as my little one LOVES science and space.

Are battery operated items like a camera that uses film, and a battery operated alarm clock ok to bring for scout weekend?

I'm a nighttime photographer and am interested in shooting the Big Tel from a distance like in the longer parking lot just up from the visitors center and before the security gates. Is it OK to stop and park around 2 am or overnight and get some long exposures?
كُتب بتاريخ 18 مارس 2019
A long-exposure shot from the parking lot and/or observation deck is absolutely possible! Just do not go past the security gates or down the hill from the parking lot. If you would like to get a little closer, please contact the Observatory. During the summer, the telescope is at maintenance and we allow photographers to get a little closer - with prior permissions, of course! Please contact the Observatory through their Media office (Media tab on the Web site).

How far away from the GBT do I need to be before I can use my digital camera? It's a canon eos 20d.

When you take the tour, the bus will stop for a photo opportunity when you will be able to use your camera. After that, it’s no photo.

They sure are! In fact, you can even use a disposable camera, or any film camera to take pictures behind the gates in the telescope zone. So, if you want an up-close picture with any telescope, this is the way to do it. Thank you so much for asking!
كُتب بتاريخ 9 فبراير 2018
Why can you not take digital pictures on the bus tour part? That's all I have now days.
كُتب بتاريخ 1 سبتمبر 2017
Since the interference from the digital camera fouls their data stream, one digital picture taken at the wrong moment could ruin someone's research - not a fun prospect. Taking a digital photo at Green Bank would be similar to allowing visitors of a major optical telescope (Mauna Kea, for example) to shine flashlights on the mirror of the telescope. At least the researchers allow us on the premises - which I think is pretty cool. The fact that Green Bank is a working astronomical telescope adds to the great benefit of the tour.

We are going to stop next Sunday morning on our way to ride the Durbin Rocket at 2:30pm with two grandsons (4 and 8), If we arrive at 10am, will that give us enough time to see everything and take the 11am tour? Do we need reservations for the tour? Thanks.
كُتب بتاريخ 13 مايو 2017
I don't think you need to make reservations for the tour, which follows a short video in the theater. The museum has many interesting hands-on exhibits. You may find yourselves wishing for more time in order to enjoy all the exhibits to the fullest extent as the roads to Cass are somewhat curvy and may require reduced travel speeds and extended travel time to get there. The museum also has cafe fare, if you were planning to eat lunch there. Suggest calling the museum for specific details.
