Love hiking in this area. Be sure you wear appropriate shoes and have enough water. It is not easy to climb at Seneca Rocks when the weather is hot. Definitely not for toddlers.

I wish we had more time to spend here. We were just passing through on our way to Elkins and decided to stop. What a neat rock formation. I would have liked to have been able to hike the trail to the top observation deck but did not. We were told decent hikers/walkers could make the round trip in an hour to an hour and a half or so. Great spot for pictures!

We read another review that said to expect to spend 40-60 minutes here, and this bit of misinformation made us think that our only choice was to walk around the base and look up at the top. No one, short of an Olympic athlete, would be able to get to the top and back in 60 minutes or less, even if they spent no time looking around.
The rocks themselves are very beautiful, thrusting directly up out of the rolling hills. Obviously they are great for serious rock climbers. This review is for everyone else. The rocks are beautiful; the view from the observation deck is beautiful; there is no charge to enter or park. It is definitely worth a trip, but be prepared for a more strenuous experience than you might think when you read “graded path” and “observation deck.” Even the graded path can be fairly steep at times, and it goes around multiple switchbacks. The descent on the graded path took us more than 30 minutes of fairly quick walking.
There is a second option for getting to the observation deck: a very strenuous, uphill scramble on a small rocky path. The path is so steep that even being rocky doesn’t help much—you won’t be stepping from rock to rock or anything like that. It took us an hour to climb that side, and we are relatively fit (although not native to the mountains).
Be sure to check out a map of the trails before you start. From the parking lot/visitor center, it is easy to miss the one sign that might set you straight since there are so many ways to approach the rocks. There is signage and the uphill scramble we ended up on was pretty well marked with blue diamonds, but if you aren’t familiar with what the trails are doing, the signage doesn’t really help. For instance, at one point, the blue diamond trail splits, with one direction going to the “east face” and the other continuing (unlabeled?) up to the observation deck.
There is a visitor center with water and flush toilets and a gift shop. We didn’t find any obvious trail map or information about the options there. A single sign hanging over a back door would have led us to the graded path, but we missed it (hence why we ended up on a path scrambling up the mountainside).
Three notes: (1) The observation deck is usually quite crowded. (2) There are rocks beyond the observation deck that take you higher still, but those are clearly marked with “danger of death beyond this point” types of signage. Continue on at your own risk. (3) If you are driving to Seneca Rocks from the north or south, it’s a nice drive. If you are approaching from the west, you’ll have to drive over the Allegheny Front, meaning steep, windy roads with up to 10% grades. Inevitably, someone will tailgate you. Just turn on your hazard lights and take it slow.

Many beautiful sights to see. Definitely check out the lower trail by the river to get full view of rocks! Rare birds and very picture worthy. Nearby Spruce knob a must see,and Spruce Lake is beautiful.
We had a great time staying at Yokums can't wait to do it again

I decided to take my wife on the "easy" trail up to the overlook. Alltrails more accurately rates it as moderate. It was a tough trip for us because it was a hot day (upper 80's) and we are not in good shape. We met several people that were struggling but still made it to the top. The trail is very rocky so I would recommend hiking boots. It's not too steep since they are many switchbacks but it's a steady climb. There are benches to rest along the trail. We did meet a family that underestimated the trail and were all wearing flip-flops and had no water with them. There is a spot next to the bridge where you can cool off in the river. You can't see the rocks from the overlook, only the valley below. I will say that the view was worth it, but I don't think my wife will ever forget what I put her through:)

Not much to review. The location was beautiful and the center had quite a bit of information. We just made a brief stop here.

We visited here in Sept 2022.
Didn’t even know this existed before we passed it and decided to stop on the way back. It’s worth your time to hike the 1.2 mile uphill hike to the observation deck and then up to the rocks past the sign. If your in decent shape the uphill trail shouldn’t be a problem. The trail is small gravel most of the way with a few steps and several switch backs. We are in our 50s & 60s and it wasn’t too hard. We stopped several times to catch our breath. There are several benches and large rocks to stop and rest on the way up. It took around an hour to walk up with several stops and around 30 to walk down. Down is definitely a lot easer than up.
The view from the rocks is awesome. I felt like I was on top of the world standing on top of the rocks looking around the valleys on all sides.
I highly recommend this!!! It’s worth your time and effort.

We hiked the 1.3 miles up to the top, not a hard hike, not for an out of shape person. The sights are beautiful at the top. Some areas are steep and steps are required,

So unique and towering above the landscapes. Great photo opportunity. The picnic area below had plentiful tables and great views of the rocks. Loads of parking.
The Seneca Rocks Trail was amazing. I found it to be difficult for me (out of shape). But boy was it worth it. The observation deck looks out over a beautiful valley.

We weren't expecting the discovery center to be closed (Tuesdays & Wednesdays), so that was disappointing. But we enjoyed the hike to the observation platform. The description of the hike on the park's website might be a bit optimistic - we made it all the way with our 9 and 12 year old kids, but it wasn't easy, and young kids might really struggle. Nonetheless, we enjoyed it, and the view at the top is pretty great.

How do you get to Faux cave or cave hope from Smokehole Caverns coming towards Seneca.

How do you get to Faux cave or cave hope from Seneca Rocks Discovery center?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 أغسطس 2019
We may be talking about different areas - but the cave the people tend to use for climbing etc is on the South End, visible from the road on the walk in.

Down below Seneca Rocks can you still swim in the swimming hole? It has been a few years since we have been there.
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يوليو 2018
I saw a family enjoying swimming there, last season. This season the water has been pretty high and there looked to be snags in the water.

There's a useful site which mentions licensing requirements, and had the most detail: uavcoach. Of course in Federal parks, typically you need special permits for drones, but this is a state park.
Personally I find drones far more annoying than loud music when out hiking or climbing admittedly the pictures are fantastic and safer.

Would this be a nice place to bring a motorcycle to see the sights?

What is there to do between the dates December 12th to the 20th?
كُتب بتاريخ 15 نوفمبر 2015
With Seneca Rock being in the Appalachian Mountains, some of the roads to get there are pretty steep. If there is snow there, I would recommend having chains on your tires. Going through the Seneca Caverns might be available, but you'd have to check their website first to see if they offer tours during that part of December. Hiking up the Seneca Rock hill is pretty steep too, so if there is snow on the trail, it might be slippery. But there is a visitor center at Seneca Rock, but not sure if it is open in December... check their web site to see if they are open in December.

do you pay when you enter park? want to hike to top. is there a store that sells water near the rocks?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 يوليو 2015
You don't have to pay and parking is free. Yokum's across the road probably has snacks. Definitely take water as it a long way up. Were going back this weekend. It is an amazing view. You can go past the lookout and claw your way up onto the spar for bonus views.

Are dogs on a leash welcome to all parts of the park, even the caves? Small dogs
كُتب بتاريخ 21 مارس 2015
Dogs are welcome on a leash. Caves are closed to visitors due to white nose syndrome on the bats. I don't know of any caves on Seneca Rocks though.
