‪I was totally in awe by the large number of July 1, 1916 battle deaths commemorated here among the more than 2,000 graves. I found the graves of twenty officers from several battalions of the Manchester Regiment, including that of Lieutenant Colonel Harold Lewis of the 20th Battalion. Most of those officers were buried close together on this former battlefield. Also found quite a few graves from the West Surrey Regiment. One can stand in this cemetery and gaze upon the terrain of the unsuccessful day-long British attach and imagine what took place here over 100 years ago.‬

‪Yet another cemetery, wherever you look - there appears to be another on the horizon. This one has those mostly from Welsh Division.‬

‪like many other cemeteries, but a lot of information available for a few of the guys. In particular, Cpt Charles Ma. it was most upsetting and respectful i feel, to read around 10days worth of diary accounts for this fine man, at his graveside.‬

‪One of our party of 11 discovered that a Great Uncle was buried here and this made our visit to what might have been 'just another' cemetery more poignant.
It's hard to find anything unique to say about these wonderfully conceived, executed and maintained sites - so a personal connection made it all the more memorable.‬

‪This location was the 22nd Manchesters objective on 1 July 1916, with 1st South Staffords in support. Today it is a large cemetery with mainly UK but also a few New Zealand, Australian, Canadian and South African burials. Almost 2,000 in total. The diversity is due to this cemetery being used to concentrate 8 or so other battlefield cemeteries in one location after the Armistice. The views from here are terrific - you can clearly see Mametz Wood and valley, Fricourt, High Wood and across to Albert. There are so many moving cemeteries in The Somme, but I liked this one for its historic significance and panoramic views.‬
