‪Well worth the trip - inspirational - and delicious‬
ديسمبر 2017
‪This is more of a combined review. You probably won't find the village of Roxbury Wi on any tour guided trip, but take a couple mile detour off Hwy 12 between Madison and Sauk City and you're in for a nice stop. As noted by other reviewers the drive includes a number of homes, tavern and a school built with the block and stack method of limestone construction. As you get close to the village, you'll see the church on a hill in the center of town. A mix of newer and older homes surround the predomently agricultural area. St. Norbert's has almost a cathedral-esque majesty to it. Constructed in the traditional cross style church structure - turn of the century woodwork, a high alter that holds a painting that should be in a museum or art gallery, tranquil grounds steeped in history. While the convent no longer stands, you can walk down the hill from the church past a grotto shrine and see the centerpiece of the cicular driveway that once greeted visitors to the convent. The school - some sections which date to the 1860's is still in use today. Next door to the church grounds is the well known Dorf Haus Restaurant. Carrying on the community's German heritage, the restaurant offers fish fry, steaks, a wide variety of ethnic specialties and once a month, a Bavarian Smorgasboard. About a block from the church is the Roxbury Tavern - the historic limestone buildling is again full of history and some great bar food. About 3 blocks away is the Well maintained Frey School. While not open for tours, the grounds are a nice spot to take a break from a bike ride or grab a picnic lunch. If scheduled you could make a nice day out of this visit and enjoy a great dinner. If you have a chance to take in services at the church, try to be there when the organ plays... It is a large air driven pipe organ with amazing sound. The organ facade is a dominant part of the back of the church. The church also have beautifully restored statuary and shrines within. Worth a trip off the main drag.‬

‪A Hilltop Treasure‬
الأصدقاء • أغسطس 2016
‪St. Norbert's Roman Catholic Church is a modest but stately architectural treasure situated on a hilltop in the center of the Wisconsin hamlet called Roxbury in Sauk County, about 25 miles from the state capitol, Madison. Its Romanesque Revival architectural design and its construction of what appears to be locally quarried limestone are outstanding to behold. Inside this beautifully detailed house of worship, a visitor will find a large altar painting of namesake St. Norbert, an artwork that was donated in the mid-1800s by King Ludwig of Bavaria as a gift to the many Bavarian immigrant homesteaders and farmers there. A few minutes of online research will help a potential visitor appreciate the chruch, the village and the rich history of the area.‬

‪The altar-picture is magnificent. You feel like in Bavaria- One just question why the oldest Catholic Church from WI is not a Basilica yet????‬
