Beautiful small museum. Worth a stop while you're in Stoughton, just to see the craftsmanship that went into the building itself, as well as the everyday objects on display here. Friendly docents.
It's unfortunate that photos are prohibited in all parts of the building; we were the only visitors on a cloudy August Saturday afternoon. It seems like they could use the free publicity that would come from guests posting on social media.

Small and quiet museum with very up-to-date exhibits. We’re readers, so especially enjoyed the stories included on easy to read screens we can page through by touch. Liked the artwork and story of the Norwegian artist as well. In the back was a display of women’s hats and purses that was colorful and took time and skill to originally create.
This is not a museum for children, who would become bored very quickly, but we adults appreciated it. Picture taking has some restrictions. No gift shop because Sparta is already full of them with Norwegian themes, all storefronts in easy walking distance. The entire town has a strong Norwegian heritage.

I love visiting Livsreise. The staff are quite welcoming and helpful. On this visit I was looking for a particular video on one of the heritage kiosks and needed help to find it. Staff were at the ready.
The temporary exhibits are always worth the trip. On this one I saw large old photographs by Knud Knudsen (1832-1915). He is considered one of Norway’s most important photographers. On display are stunningly beautiful photos of old Norway. (This exhibit is on view until March 14, 2020.)

My wife was born and raised in stoughton and we have donated artifacts to Livsreise (Life's Journey). Stoughton has a rich Norwegian history. Up to the mid 1900's, Stoughton churches had Norwegian language services, A meal of Lutefisk and lefse is a must at Christmas and at the Sons of Norway lodge next to livsreise. Attend a meeting and join in singing the national anthems of the United States, Norway (in Norwegian) and Canada. Livsreise displays what Norwegian immigrants brought with them on the boats and used upon arrival in Stoughton. The rosemaled trunks in which they were packed are also on display. The art of rosemaling is on display during the annual celebration of Norwegian independence on Syttende Mai on the weekend closest to the 17th. of May. Be sure to express your surprise, pleasure, disgust, fear, or love of by saying "uffda!".

Wonderful films to watch on Norwegian experience in Wisconsin, lovely helpful employees, even help with your genealogy work! Really gorgeous building inside and out - and free.....Wish we lived closer!

I was pleasantly surprised by the fascinating exhibits, especially a high tech immigration experience where you pick three things by punching buttons on a large floor-mounted console and a video appears on a screen on the wall in front of you telling you about your experience.
The delightfully helpful volunteer staff was no surprise. Stoughton is that kind of place.

The information given was not too lengthy and told the story of Norwegians coming to the US. The films were great but not too long. The people working were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Parking Judy across the street and a fully accessible building for anyone who may have trouble walking. Also great displays

This is a beautiful building that chronicles Norway and the various immigrants and their lives and times. Our community was built on Norwegians and this proudly displays it. Highly recommend it if you are interested in Norwegian culture. A plus, it's free for all to enjoy.
