This is a vast place to explore. It has beaches and woodland. It is really beautiful. If you have limited mobility it could be a little difficult to walk far unless you have a mobile scooter or similar that can go on different terrains . It does have a really good core shop which overlooks beautiful area so you can sit there and enjoy a cuppa while looking out. They also have a few scopes and things that you can borrow while sat there to look out.

I had a beautiful walk here. I'm not sure what path I took exactly. After going down to the beach, I was mostly in the wood, although I kept peeking out for lovely views of the sand dunes and beach. Although it was quite dark in the wood, these moments were very bright - the sky was beautifully blue. I loved the "spiky trees" in the wood and how the terrain changed from woodland floor to sand as I got close to Wells. In Wells itself, I also liked the row of colourful beach huts. There were a lot of bird watchers with massive zoom lenses about so it must surely be the place for it. I travelled by bus and didn't visit the café so I can't comment on the facilities. I was a bit disappointed to see some rubbish at intervals along my walk but nevertheless had a great time and would really recommend it.

Great easy to use car park - nice cafe at the reserve (either end) and beautiful marked paths as well as walking on the beach

We holidayed here 40+ years ago with our children; we now visit as a retired couple. We loved it then and we love it now. The beach and walks are wonderful and, weather permitting, (which it usually is), we love to sit on the beach watching the world go by and brave souls swimming.
But; after a few hours of rain huge puddles developed in the car park and remained for the best part of two days. These made some areas inaccessible. There were deep puddles in front of both ticket machines and on the walkways through the gaps in the fences.
It really is time Holkham Estates invested some money to address this problem.

Visited on Sunday 10th April 2022 and though we only went for a walk, that was enough to appreciate how stunning this landscape was. Obviously very flat in appearance we enjoyed the transition from the wooded area to open beach inc sand dunes and the coast where birds could be enjoyed running back and forth as the waves came in to search for grubs etc. Enjoyed observing the shells on the shoreline and had the opportunity to see the horse riders taking advantage of the flat beach to ride. The car park is based on a long straight access road opposite Holkham village where you park on either side and at the top near the beach, there is a visitors centre. Lots of opportunities to explore the area if you have the time and signage at the said car park detailing all the various types of natural landscapes available in the reserve.

We're delighted to hear you had a fab time over at the NNR & beach. Over by the Lookout, visitors can even see a list of birds that have been spotted recently! We hope you can return at some point for a more thorough exploration.

The reserve is easy to find and has extensive parking, mind you at quite a price. There are walks of various sorts, overlooking the marshes (with 2 hides), along the vast coast or down to the shoreline. All have different and interesting things to see. In May parts are restricted due to ground nesting birds but that adds to the interest on the location. Refreshments and toilets available.

The walk between Wells and Holkham is really lovely, with a quick stop at the lookout cafe. Great place to take the dog and the footpath is buggy friendly.

A beautiful location managed by Holkham Hall now. Be aware that there are long distances from the car park if you have mobility issues.

I have a quick question... are there toilets still accessible during Covid 19? We are wanting to visit on Saturday (27th June 2020) but would like to know if the toilets are open.

Hi Sadie,
There is a small section of the beach where nudism is allowed (this is to the left, direction Brancaster). The rest of the beach is not a nudist beach. Hope that answers your question.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the unforeseen disruption to our Lady Anne’s Drive, Freeman Street and Wells Beach Road car parks. To prevent unauthorised encampment, we are sorry no campervans, no caravans and no mobile homes are permitted at present. Please check Holkham website and social media for updates on when the ban will be lifted.

Hi Carol, you'll be pleased to hear, there are facilities currently being built on Lady Anne's Drive which are due for completion late this summer. This has been an ongoing issue which we have responded to, it has taken a few years with planning permission on the nature reserve but lavatories and a modest cafe will soon be up and running.

Thanks for your enquiry. Just to let you know that there are toilets in Holkham village opposite Adnams store. Turn left as you exit the beach and then first right.

I believe the parking is 3 pounds for the day in Holkham Hall venue, including for blue badge holders, just that they can park nearer the building.

Yes The Victoria Inn is owned and managed by the Holkham Estate and is directly opposite the beach and perfect for exploring this coastline. More information can be found on the holkham website.
